Escape the heat: Wadis to cool off during holidays

Muscat, June 5 As Eid Al Adha holidays begin, residents and visitors are gearing up for a well-deserved break. Oman announced a five-day holiday, including the weekend, providing an excellent opportunity for short getaways. But with temperatures soaring above 46 °C in several regions, many are turning to nature's own remedy — Oman's wadis — to escape the heat. These freshwater wadis, scattered across the Sultanate of Oman, offer lush palm groves, dramatic cliffs and most importantly — cool, flowing water. Whether you're seeking adventure or serenity, here's a curated list of some of the best wadis to visit this holiday, ranging from popular tourist spots to hidden gems. WADI AL SHAB: The Icon of Natural Beauty, Location: Tiwi, Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, Highlights: Clear turquoise pools, hidden cave waterfall, hiking trails. One of Oman's most iconic wadis, Wadi Al Shab is a favourite among locals and tourists alike. After a short boat ride and a scenic hike through dramatic gorges, visitors are rewarded with emerald pools and a secret cave waterfall. Go early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. WADI BANI KHALID: The Family Favourite, Location: Al Sharqiyah North Governorate, Highlights: Easy access, shaded date palms, large swimming pools Perfect for families, Wadi Bani Khalid offers accessibility without compromising on natural beauty. With year-round flowing water and picnic spots under date palms, it's ideal for a relaxed day out. However, expect some crowd during the holidays. WADI AL ARBEIEEN: The Untamed Beauty, Location: Qurayat, Muscat Governorate, Highlights: Deep pools, towering cliffs, 4x4 access, A more rugged and remote option, Wadi Al Arbeieen is known for its dramatic scenery and deep freshwater pools. It's best suited for those with a 4WD vehicle and an adventurous spirit. Less crowded than the bigger wadis, it offers a peaceful escape surrounded by soaring mountains. WADI DARBAT: A Green Paradise in Dhofar, Location: Salalah, Dhofar Governorate, Highlights: Waterfalls (seasonal), lush vegetation, boating, Though better known during the Khareef (monsoon) season, Wadi Darbat still retains its charm in early summer, especially after spring rains. Visitors may enjoy light boating and spotting wildlife in this lush wadi. A great pick if you're heading south for a cooler Eid holiday. WADI TIWI: The Twin to Wadi Al Shab, Location: Near Sur, Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, Highlights: Villages along the cliffs, natural springs, Often overshadowed by its neighbour Wadi Al Shab, Wadi Tiwi deserves attention for its unique setting — narrow roads weave through villages perched on cliff sides. A wonderful mix of culture and nature, with several swimming spots along the way. WADI DAMM: The Hidden Jewel, Location: Near Bahla, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, Highlights: Rock formations, calm pools, ideal for a peaceful retreat, Tucked away in the interior, Wadi Damm is perfect for those wanting to avoid the crowds. Known for its unusual rock formations and calm waterholes, it's a great spot for reflection and relaxation. Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as shaded areas are limited. WADI AL HOQAIN: The Photographer's Dream, Location: Al Batinah South Governorate, Highlights: Waterfalls, palm-lined paths, historic falaj systems, With scenic waterfalls and traditional irrigation systems, Wadi Al Hoqain is not only refreshing but also photogenic. It's accessible for all vehicles, making it an excellent option for a half-day trip. BLURB Tips for Visiting Wadis: - Avoid peak heat hours by heading out at dawn. - Bring water and snacks: Most wadis are in remote areas with limited facilities. - Respect nature: Take all waste with you and avoid loud music. - Safety first: Avoid swimming in fast currents and check weather forecasts in case of flash floods.
