Scarlett Johansson was shocked when Marvel's Avengers: Endgame was not nominated for Best Picture: ‘It was an impossible movie…'

Indian Express15-05-2025

Avengers: Endgame is hailed by many as the biggest superhero movie of all time. Marvel completely hit it out of the park, be it with box-office collection, the overall expanse of the narrative, or the star-studded cast, which, to everyone's surprise, worked seamlessly on screen. However, no matter how big or impressive superhero films have gotten over time, whenever it comes to award functions, there are only a few who have cracked their way into nominations apart from visual effects and costumes. Actor Scarlett Johansson pointed out this very fact in a recent interview and revealed that she was shocked when she heard that Avengers: Endgame has not been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
While talking to Vanity Fair, the Black Widow star voiced her disappointment over the supposed snub and questioned how such a successful movie failed to make the cut for the Best Picture award. 'How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar? It was an impossible movie that should not have worked that really works as a film — and also, it's one of the most successful films of all time.' Like most superhero movies in the past, Endgame received a nomination for the movie's visual effects, but that was it. Among Marvel's wide filmography, only one movie has ever been nominated for Best Picture, and that was Black Panther (2018), and the Chadwick Boseman starrer took home other awards such as the Oscar for Best Costume, Best Soundtrack and Best Production Design.

Scarlett Johansson seems to have pointed out a reality which is quite prevalent in the film fraternity. Renowned director Martin Scorsese once compared Marvel movies to 'theme parks' and said that they couldn't be considered cinema. While talking to Empire, he said, 'I don't see them. I tried, you know? But that's not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks.' Even director James Cameron told IndieWire about feeling 'fatigue' from watching superhero movies. 'Come on, guys, there are other stories to tell besides hypergonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It's like, Oy!'
Apart from snubbing at awards shows, Marvel is currently focusing on its upcoming projects like The Fantastic Four: The First Steps and the new Avengers film, Doomsday. Since Endgame, the studio has struggled while trying to deliver a hit in theatres, and now with Robert Downey Jr coming back to the cast, Marvel will be hoping to put a win on the board.

Is Ryan Gosling The Next Black Panther For Marvel? What We Know

Last Updated: Ryan Gosling's casting as Black Panther started as a joke, but it gave fans hope after new Marvel comics introduced a new T'Challa who is white. Hollywood star Ryan Gosling is already set to appear in the upcoming Star Wars film, but fans now believe he might also join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). A meme showing Gosling's face edited onto Black Panther's body has gone viral—and what started as a joke has gained unexpected traction thanks to a new Marvel comic. According to Comic Book Movie, Marvel's latest series Marvel Knights: The World to Come introduces a new version of the Black Panther. The storyline begins with an older T'Challa's death and then moves back in time to explore events leading to his downfall. In a major twist, a new Black Panther emerges—Ketema, a white man who is hinted to be the son of T'Challa and Monica Lynne. The comic explores Ketema's strained relationship with his father. His unresolved emotions lead him to challenge T'Challa and eventually claim the throne of Wakanda. The introduction of a white Black Panther has sparked conversations online, with some fans pointing out the uncanny resemblance between the comic character and Gosling. While there has been no official announcement from Marvel about Gosling's involvement, the comic's storyline—and the viral meme—have fueled speculation that the actor could be cast as Ketema in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. For now, it's just fan theory. But with Gosling's star power and Marvel's history of surprising casting moves, anything seems possible. RUMOR: Ryan Gosling will be the new Black Panther in the #MCU from another universe! — MCU Source (@MCUSource) June 5, 2025 Fans now shared more memes about Ryan Gosling as Black Panther. The multiverse gives space for new and bold ideas, but Black Panther holds a strong cultural meaning and for many, it's not a role that should be changed easily following the death of Chadwick Boseman. As of now, Gosling hasn't been cast in any Marvel movie and the rumour started as a meme. It picked up again only because the new comic introduced Ketema, a white version of Black Panther. Currently, Gosling is busy preparing for Star Wars: Starfighter. Meanwhile, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are eagerly waiting for Avengers: Doomsday, the fifth film in the Avengers series. The movie is expected to bring together the newer group of heroes introduced in recent films. What has caught everyone's attention is the return of Robert Downey Jr, who will play the powerful villain Doctor Doom, who earlier played Iron Man. While not much is known about the plot, the film is expected to show a huge battle between the heroes and Doom, who is one of the most powerful villains in Marvel. The superhero movie is set to release on December 18, 2026. First Published:

Snoop Dogg biopic gets its director, Coming 2 America, Dolemite Is My Name-fame Craig Brewer to helm film

Craig Brewer, known for helming such films as Hustle & Flow and Dolemite Is My Name, is set to direct the biopic of Snoop Dogg. Universal Pictures has set Craig Brewer to film the definitive biography of Snoop Dogg's rise from hip-hop artist to renowned entertainment magnate. Brewer will contribute revisions to a script previously written by Joe Robert Cole. The film will be produced by Snoop Dogg, Brian Grazer and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker. SVP Production Development Ryan Jones will oversee the project for the studio, reported Deadline. The Snoop Dogg film marks the first movie under Death Row Pictures' overall contract with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios. It is an offshoot of Death Row Records, the label that established Snoop Dogg's career and is now embarking on an ambitious new chapter with the expansion. The strategic shift strengthens the brand's reach beyond music, ushering in a new era of imaginative on-screen storytelling. Universal has found success in the historical hip hop space with the F. Gary Gray-directed Straight Outta Compton, the story of the seminal rap group N.W.A film that was nominated for a Best Screenplay Oscar and grossed more than USD 200 million. Before that came 8 Mile, which starred Eminem in a drama based on his life and rise. Grazer produced that film, which grossed USD 250 million and won an Original Song Oscar for "Lose Yourself." Death Row's upcoming slate of projects starts with the Snoop Dogg biopic. Beyond film, Snoop will return to NBC's musical competition series The Voice this fall, reclaiming his red chair for Season 28. On top of that, he will continue to partner with NBCUniversal on cross-portfolio opportunities; he was a breakout star on NBC and Peacock's coverage of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, reported Deadline.
