Wrexham star's dad landed in hot water with Cristiano Ronaldo after 'uncool' request

The father of one of Wrexham's key players found himself in a spot of bother with Cristiano Ronaldo due to a favour his son requested.
As a physio at Everton from 2002 to 2010, Mick Rathbone would often bring his football-loving son to the club, where he rubbed shoulders with stars like Wayne Rooney and Duncan Ferguson. However, it was Manchester United icon Ronaldo who truly captivated future Wrexham midfielder Ollie Rathbone.
Mick shared an uncomfortable moment with the Portuguese superstar in a corridor after a match between Everton and United, all because Ollie had asked his dad to get a shirt signed by his hero.
In his book "The Smell of Football," Mick wrote: "Sometimes, I must admit, when surrounded by these superstars, I just wanted to grab a pen and piece of paper and get their autographs, but this was frowned upon as being totally uncool.
"A few years ago, however, when we played United, Ollie begged me to get Cristiano Ronaldo's autograph on his brand new Portugal shirt that he had just received for his birthday. I really didn't like to ask and did feel a bit of an anorak, but you know what it's like - you will do anything for your kids, won't you?
"I kept my eyes peeled after the match, hoping to spot Ronaldo passing the medical room. Eventually, I saw him and stepped into the bustling corridor, clutching the shirt. Dressed in full Everton gear, I didn't feel too out of place.

"'Excuse me, Cristiano, could you please sign this for my son?' He didn't seem too thrilled, but took the shirt and pen without looking up or acknowledging me, and began to scribble. 'Could you write, 'To Oliver, happy birthday' on it please, Cristiano?' He still didn't look up but just continued scribbling.
"'It's O-L-I-V...' I didn't get any further. He simply tossed the shirt back at me where, due to static electricity, it stuck. He then walked off, leaving me with the shirt on my head."
Mick added: "There were a couple of the Everton press guys in the corridor that day who witnessed the whole thing, and we spent the next 10 minutes in fits of laughter. Never again."

Ollie experienced life at United first-hand as a young player, having progressed through the club's academy alongside the likes of Marcus Rashford. The 28-year-old spent eight years with the Red Devils before moving to Rochdale in 2016 due to limited opportunities in the first team.
He subsequently signed for Rotherham, where he had a successful three-year spell, before his transfer to Wrexham for £500,000 last summer. Ollie made a strong impression in his debut season with the club, owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, contributing significantly to Phil Parkinson's team's promotion from League One.
He was also honoured as the club's player of the season after netting eight goals in 41 league matches. Mick has voiced his pleasure at Ollie's accomplishments at Wrexham, having played a key role in their rise to the Championship for the first time in 43 years.

"I'm proud of Ollie; all the family are, but I'd be just as proud of him if he served me a coffee," Mick told The Leader, having become a regular fixture at the Racecourse Ground this season. "We love the atmosphere at home games and Ollie's enjoyed it at Wrexham; he says it's a fantastic club.
"He got a knock on the ankle early on in the season and had to work hard to get into the side, but once he did you knew he was going to give his all to remain there. He's consistent, has a great work-rate and he'll give you everything - and fans appreciate that.
"Supporters pay their hard-earned cash and if they see players giving it their all, they'll like you. I was a bit like that in my playing days at Blackburn as giving 100 per cent every game is the minimum requirement for a footballer, whether you're playing for Barcelona or the Dog and Duck."

Arsenal deal for Viktor Gyokeres at risk as Sporting issue threat
Arsenal's deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres could be at risk as Sporting CP have threatened to increase the striker's asking price. Earlier this week, Sporting's president, Frederico Varandas, hit out at Gyokeres' agent over suggestions that a transfer fee had already been agreed ahead of the summer transfer window. Gyokeres has a €100 million (£85.1m) release clause in his contract but Sporting have been willing to sell the Sweden international for lower than that amount. Varandas was angered by claims that Sporting have agreed to sell Gyokeres for €60m (£51m) plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons and warned the striker's representative, Hasan Cetinkaya, that he is 'making the situation worse'. During his negotiations to bring Gyokeres to Sporting in a £20m deal from Coventry City two years ago, Cetinkaya secured an exclusive sales mandate which means that the Portuguese champions will have to pay the agent 10 per cent of the value of any rejected offer above €60m (£51m). Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. It is understood that if Cetinkaya decides to activate that mandate this summer, Sporting will respond by demanding that Gyokeres' €100m (£85.1m) release clause is paid in full. Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, met with his counterpart at Sporting, Bernardo Palmeiro, in Menorca to discuss a deal for Gyokeres this week. Arsenal's initial proposal worth an €55m (£46.8m) plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons was rejected but an improved offer is expected. Sporting are believed to be holding out for a deal worth closer to €80m (£68.1m) including add-ons. More Trending Reports in Portugal on Thursday claimed that there is a 'growing optimism' in Gyokeres' camp that a deal can be agreed between Arsenal and Sporting. Manchester United also remain in the race to sign Gyokeres and are hoping his strong relationship with Ruben Amorim can overcome the striker's reservations about the lack of European football at Old Trafford next season. United have indicated to Sporting that they are willing to pay €60m (£51.1m) up front, plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in performance-related bonuses. Gyokeres, who finished the season with 54 goals in 52 games and helped Sporting win the domestic double in Portugal, issued a cryptic message on Instagram on Thursday which read: 'There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Chelsea receive Joao Felix transfer message from Benfica
Benfica president Rui Costa says he would be keen to sign Joao Felix from Chelsea but admits the Portuguese club are unable to finance a move. Felix returned to Chelsea in a £46.3 million deal from Atletico Madrid last August but the 25-year-old struggled secure a regular role under Enzo Maresca and ended up joining AC Milan on loan in the January transfer window. The Portugal international failed to recapture his form in Italy and AC Milan ended up deciding that they would not sign him on a permanent deal this summer. Felix's career at Chelsea now appears to be over after he was left out of their Club World Cup squad, while he has also been stripped of his No.14 shirt, which has been given to new £18m signing Geovany Quenda. Felix made his professional debut for Benfica's reserve side in 2016 and played just one full season in the first team before his £113m move to Atletico Madrid three years later. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link we'll send you so we can get football news tailored to you. Benfica continue to be linked with re-signing Felix but Rui Costa says the Portuguese club are a 'long way' from that deal due to the forward's transfer fee and salary with Chelsea. 'Every year I get asked this question. If we could bring back players from our academy, who have the quality and prominence that a player like Joao has, we would all like that, all Benfica fans would like that,' Rui Costa said on Friday after Benfica arrived in the United States ahead of their Club World Cup campaign. 'We have to understand two things. The players are not free, they have very high contracts with the clubs and very high transfer fees. More Trending 'The amounts involved, both in transfers and salaries, are very high and we have to respect that part. 'Benfica wants all the great players. Joao is an excellent player. It is a long way from there until we bring Joao back, I can't say much more than that. 'There is no way I can come close to thinking that it is possible. 'For signings, we will have our targets referenced. We want to build a Benfica -style team, but the focus is the Club World Cup, which has to be a great source of pride.'
