Westpac online banking suffers glitch, apologises after customers left frustrated
'We apologise for the inconvenience, our tech teams are looking into this with urgency.'
Westpac One was unavailable for both browser and app (iOS and Android) users.
However, the bank said card services and ATMs were unaffected and scheduled payments were working as normal.
The technical glitch left customers frustrated that they could not complete online transactions. At least one customer was unable to pay for petrol to get to work.
'A text would have been great so people aren't stressing. I was literally trying to do a transfer but couldn't get in,' one person said on Facebook.
Another said their daughter was trying to top up a Hop card but couldn't.
'This happens at least once a week, I have bills to pay and can't access my account!!!!!,' another said.
Others might be a little late for work: 'Sucks Much! Can't even transfer funds to Gas my Car this morning.'
A peak of 581 people had reported an outage on Downdetector.

Apple has unveiled a redesigned software interface featuring a material called Liquid Glass, set to be deployed across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. Liquid Glass design The Liquid Glass material is translucent, dynamically adapting to its environment by reflecting and refracting surrounding content and responding to changes in light. Apple states that this new material is used throughout user interface elements such as controls, navigation bars, app icons, widgets, and more, aiming to bring a consistent visual language across all supported platforms while preserving the unique characteristics of each operating system. "At Apple, we've always believed in the deep integration of hardware and software that makes interacting with technology intuitive, beautiful, and delightful," said Alan Dye, Apple's Vice President of Human Interface Design. "This is our broadest software design update ever. Meticulously crafted by rethinking the fundamental elements that make up our software, the new design features an entirely new material called Liquid Glass. It combines the optical qualities of glass with a fluidity only Apple can achieve, as it transforms depending on your content or context. It lays the foundation for new experiences in the future and, ultimately, it makes even the simplest of interactions more fun and magical." According to Apple, Liquid Glass's colour shifts in response to content and lighting conditions, and it uses real-time rendering to create interactive highlights as users move through the interface. The material appears in elements ranging from buttons, sliders, and switches, to larger navigational features such as tab bars and sidebars. Updated app and system experiences Apple reports that controls, toolbars, and navigation bars within apps have been redesigned to better align with the rounded corners characteristic of recent hardware. These elements now act as functional layers above app content, adapting dynamically as users move through apps or require additional options. Apple claims the redesign also helps group controls more logically, enabling quicker access for users. Tab bars on iOS now shrink when users scroll to prioritise displayed content, then expand when needed for navigation. On iPadOS and macOS, new sidebar designs aim to make apps like Apple TV more immersive by refracting and reflecting elements from the user's wallpaper and app content, providing contextual awareness. The design changes apply to several default apps, including Camera, Photos, Safari, FaceTime, Apple Music, Apple News, and Apple Podcasts. Personalisation and developer tools Liquid Glass is featured in system-wide elements such as the Lock Screen, Home Screen, Dock, app icons, and widgets. On the Mac, the menu bar now appears fully transparent and desktop personalisation includes options for light or dark modes and colourful tints. In macOS Tahoe 26, users can further customise with widgets and app icons adapting their appearance based on system themes. For developers, updated APIs for SwiftUI, UIKit, and AppKit will enable the integration of the Liquid Glass design and new controls into their applications. Apple says this will help developers refresh application interfaces while ensuring consistent user experience standards across all platforms.

Apple unveils design overhaul & new AI tools for developers
Apple has announced a series of updates to its developer tools and software platforms intended to support the creation of new app experiences across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. The company has introduced a new software design called Liquid Glass, which aims to bring an increased focus to content across Apple devices while retaining a sense of familiarity. This design extends from minor interface elements such as buttons and sliders to larger navigation features. Native frameworks like SwiftUI are designed to help developers adopt this new design. A new Icon Composer app has also been unveiled, intended to assist developers and designers in creating consistent and modern app icons with advanced features, such as blurring, translucency adjustment, and previewing icons in multiple tints. The Foundation Models framework is new to Apple's developer ecosystem and allows developers to build on-device experiences leveraging Apple Intelligence. The aim is to offer intelligent features that are available offline and prioritise user privacy. The framework supports Swift and is structured to simplify access to Apple's on-device AI models with minimal code. "Developers play a vital role in shaping the experiences customers love across Apple platforms," said Susan Prescott, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "With access to the on-device Apple Intelligence foundation model and new intelligence features in Xcode 26, we're empowering developers to build richer, more intuitive apps for users everywhere." Automattic has already taken advantage of the Foundation Models framework for its Day One journaling app. "The Foundation Model framework has helped us rethink what's possible with journaling," said Paul Mayne, head of Day One at Automattic. "Now we can bring intelligence and privacy together in ways that deeply respect our users." Xcode 26 Apple has also updated its integrated development environment with the release of Xcode 26, adding intelligence features to assist developers in tasks such as code writing, test generation, documentation, error fixing, and more. Xcode now supports integration with large language models, including built-in support for ChatGPT, and allows for the use of third-party API keys or running models locally on Macs equipped with Apple silicon. Coding Tools in Xcode 26 offer developers suggested actions and support a range of tasks directly within the editor. Additional features include a redesigned navigation interface, improvements to localisation, and expanded voice control capabilities for coding and interface navigation. App Intents and visual intelligence This update includes enhancements to App Intents, with new support for visual intelligence. Developers can now provide visual search results that link users directly into their apps. For example, Etsy is incorporating visual intelligence to improve product discovery in its app. "At Etsy, our job is to seamlessly connect shoppers with creative entrepreneurs around the world who offer extraordinary items — many of which are hard to describe. The ability to meet shoppers right on their iPhone with visual intelligence is a meaningful unlock, and makes it easier than ever for buyers to quickly discover exactly what they're looking for while directly supporting small businesses," said Etsy CTO Rafe Colburn. Swift 6.2 and new framework support Swift 6.2 is set to bring improved performance, concurrency, and interoperability, now with expanded support for WebAssembly in conjunction with the open-source community. The new version also offers enhancements for writing single-threaded code. The Containerisation framework now enables developers to run Linux container images directly on a Mac, with an emphasis on isolation and security, and is optimised for Apple silicon. Gaming tools and APIs Updates for game developers include Game Porting Toolkit 3, new Metal 4 APIs designed for Apple silicon, and expanded support for running inference networks in shaders. Other features include MetalFX Frame Interpolation and Denoising, a new Apple Games app, Game Center enhancements, and support for managing in-game digital assets. Child safety and accessibility Developers can now use the new Declared Age Range API to deliver age-appropriate content, allowing parents to control what information is shared for their children. App Store Accessibility Nutrition Labels have also been introduced, providing users with more detailed accessibility information before downloading apps. The App Store Connect app also gains new capabilities, including viewing TestFlight feedback and crash reports, push notifications for tester feedback, enhanced support for webhooks, and expanded asset management features. The Apple Intelligence features require supported devices, including the latest iPhones, select iPads, and Macs with M1 and later processors, as well as compatible regional settings and languages. More languages are expected to be supported by the end of the year, with availability varying by region and device.

Internet outage hits thousands in lower North Island
A temporary outage of one of Chorus' core ethernet routers left thousands without internet across the lower North Island today. A spokesperson for the telecommunications infrastructure company told 1News shortly after midday that all impacted services were back online. "Chorus sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused and are investigating the root issue." DownDetector showed a large spike in outages across telecommunications companies Spark, One NZ, Skinny and 2Degrees from around 10.45am. A Chorus map showed that at the peak of the outage, more than 10,000 services were affected. ADVERTISEMENT More than 10,000 services affected by the outage across Wellington. (Source: Chorus) Voyager also said it had identified an issue impacting its Chorus Wellington UFB handover. "This handover services Wellington, Kapiti, Hutt Valley, Palmerston North and through to Napier. Currently around 90% of connections are offline. We are working with Chorus on a resolution."
