117 nabbed in five-day crime sweep in Kuala Muda
ALOR STAR: Police arrested 117 individuals — including 51 who tested positive for drugs — during a five-day special operation targeting criminal activities in the Kuala Muda district.
Kedah Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Yazid Muhammad Yew said Ops Mega Khas was carried out from April 17 to 21 in collaboration with various local enforcement agencies.
He said the integrated operation aimed to tackle crime holistically by focusing on known hotspots and individuals deemed high-risk.
"This large-scale operation targeted gambling, vice, gangsterism, and individuals involved in drug abuse and trafficking. The objective was to take action against those contributing to the rise in index crime within Kuala Muda," he said in a statement today.
Among those arrested were 22 individuals on the police wanted list.
The operation also resulted in the resolution of 66 property crime cases, including house break-ins and thefts reported in the district.
Yazid said police enforcement efforts would continue to ensure peace and maintain public confidence across the state.

'Some showed their passports, while others became defensive.' He estimated that these beggars earn between RM300 and RM500 daily from sympathetic passers-by, notably young professionals. Having worked in the area for over 15 years, Yuan observed that these individuals have been a fixture since before the pandemic. 'It's concerning because many appear to walk normally once they leave,' he added. He emphasised the need for increased security measures from authorities and station operators, especially with Malaysia's image at stake. 'This situation does not reflect well on our country, especially with many visitors coming here.' Yazid, a 53-year-old business owner from Jalan Maarof in Bangsar, said he has seen a van picking up several beggars from the LRT station after hours. 'The man who was in a wheelchair could actually stand, fold his equipment, and get into the vehicle. 'Another man with a walking stick could suddenly manage the road kerbs like a normal person. How bizarre,' he said. In the bustling and historic Jonker Walk in Melaka, a stark contrast unfolds as beggars sit on sidewalks with cups before them while tourists pass. Business owner Lee Chee Seng described this as a common yet saddening sight. 'They have been around for a while, often switching locations in the city. Some are homeless and destitute, while others make a living from begging,' he said. Lee said more must be done to help these people and preserve Melaka's tourism and city image.

Scammed by 'Yemeni lover', woman duped of almost RM1mil
ALOR STAR: A 53-year-old woman has fallen victim to an online love scam, losing nearly RM1 million after being deceived by a man who claimed to be from Yemen and promised love and marriage. Kuala Muda police received the report at 10.49am yesterday, lodged by the victim who realised she had been conned. Kedah Criminal Investigation Department chief Superintendent Loi Yew Lik said that the woman, a former businesswoman who is now unemployed, first made contact with the man via Facebook on Jan 26 last year. "The suspect, who claimed to be from Yemen, continued to communicate with her via WhatsApp," he said in a statement today. During their correspondence, the man sent her two rings as symbols of their supposed commitment to marriage. On Feb 5, last year, the scammer told the woman he had been hospitalised and urgently needed financial help to cover his treatment costs. He promised to repay her and assured her that he would come to Malaysia to marry her. "Motivated by trust and love, the victim began transferring money in stages from Feb 5, 2024, to March 25, 2025," said Loi. Over a 14-month period, she made a total of 166 transactions into 15 different bank accounts, amounting to RM925,850. It was only after the man failed to appear in Malaysia and blocked her on Facebook that she realised she had been scammed. Loi urged the public to exercise caution when engaging with individuals online, especially when financial requests are involved under the guise of romance.

Kedah police target high-crime areas in Kuala Muda, 117 arrested in five-day operation
ALOR SETAR, April 23 — Police detained 117 individuals via 'Ops Mega Khas' which was implemented in the Kuala Muda district from April 17 to 21. Kedah Criminal Investigation Department (CID) head SAC Muhammad Yazid Muhammad Yew said the arrests included 51 individuals who tested positive for drugs and 22 people who were on the police's wanted list. He said the operation was conducted at locations and against suspects who were identified as contributing to an increase in the crime index in the district. 'The operation was targeted at elements of gambling, immorality, gangsterism, potential criminals such as drug addicts and traffickers, as well as areas identified as high-crime areas. 'As a result, we managed to successfully solve 66 property crime cases involving housebreaking and theft that occurred in the Kuala Muda district,' he said in a statement here today. He also said that the integrated operation involved 163 police officers and personnel as well as other agencies including the Sungai Petani Municipal Council, Health Ministry, Tenaga Nasional Bhd and Department of Environment. 'This operation proves the commitment of the Kedah police contingent in ensuring that the safety and well-being of the community is maintained.
