Business Times20-05-2025

[HO CHI MINH CITY] The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has formed a strategic partnership with Vietnam's national carrier Vietnam Airlines, and Sentosa Development Corporation to launch joint marketing and promotional efforts aimed at boosting travel demand from Vietnam to Singapore.
Their planned initiatives include hosted familiarisation trips, a feature on Singapore and Sentosa in Vietnam Airlines' inflight magazine Heritage, and participation in travel fairs.
In 2024, total international arrivals in Singapore hit 16.5 million, up 21 per cent year on year, and bringing in record high tourism receipts of S$29.8 billion. Of these arrivals, more than 393,000 were from Vietnam, making it one of the city-state's top 15 visitor source markets.
Last year, inbound visitors from South-east Asia was at 5.5 million, making up about a third of total arrivals in Singapore. Indonesia is the top source market in the region, sending nearly 2.5 million visitors to the city-state in 2024.
STB's 2025 forecast for international visitor arrivals remains below the pre-pandemic record of 19.1 million set in 2019. However, tourism receipts are expected to reach another record.
Vietnam Airlines now runs 21 weekly flights connecting the country's two largest metropolises – Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City – with Singapore.

The airline's executive vice-president Dang Anh Tuan said in a statement: 'The aim goes beyond boosting visitor numbers. It's about fostering cultural exchange, connecting communities, and advancing the sustainable growth of tourism between the two nations.'
In March, Singapore and Vietnam upgraded their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership – the highest tier in Vietnam's diplomatic hierarchy and the first such tie-up between the city-state and an Asean member state.
Sentosa, one of Singapore's most popular leisure and tourist destinations, welcomed some 16 million visitors in 2023, which was at 84 per cent of the pre-pandemic annual average. Last year, Sentosa received 110,000 travellers from Vietnam.

US efforts to boost crop sales to Asia bear fruit in Vietnam

[SINGAPORE] US efforts to increase exports of agricultural products to Asia, excluding China, look to be bearing fruit, with Vietnam pledging to buy more American goods to strengthen trade ties with Washington. Hanoi is expected to sign deals with Washington to purchase more than US$2 billion worth of agricultural, forestry and fishery products, according to a statement posted on the Vietnamese government's website. The nation has vowed to increase buying of American goods, and offered to remove all tariffs on US imports to secure a trade deal and avoid high tariffs. The South-east Asian nation is already scooping up more grains from the US, especially corn, as shipments have become more attractive than South American supplies. The development comes at a time when demand from China has collapsed following trade tensions between the world's two biggest economies. A 50-member delegation led by Do Duc Duy, Vietnam's agriculture and environment minister, is in Iowa to sign five memorandums of understanding between the Vietnamese feed industry and private American companies, the Iowa Corn Growers Association said in a post on its website. 'This event showcased an increased commitment from Vietnam to purchase more agricultural products and reinforce the strong partnership between our countries,' Ralph Lents, president of the Iowa Corn Promotion Board, said in the statement. Two of the MOUs, covering the export of 900,000 tonnes of US corn and 250,000 tonnes of dried distillers grains, or DDGS, have already been signed, the association said. Vietnam is seen importing 12.7 million tonnes of corn in the 2025 to 2026 season, making it the world's third-largest buyer of the corn, according to data published by the US Department of Agriculture. The country imported about US$1.2 billion in American bulk farm commodities in 2024, according to the USDA. BLOOMBERG

Vietnam firms to sign MOUs to buy US$2 billion of US farm produce

[HANOI] Vietnamese firms will sign memorandums of understanding with US partners to buy US$2 billion worth of American farm produce, the agriculture ministry said on Tuesday, part of efforts to seal a new trade deal between the two countries. Vietnam has been slapped with 46 per cent 'reciprocal' tariffs by the Trump administration. Though they have been paused until July, if they come into effect they could seriously undermine a growth model that relies on exports to the US, its top market. The new deals, signed during a visit to the US by a delegation of 50 Vietnamese companies led by agriculture minister Do Duc Duy, include five MOUs to buy US$800 million of products from Iowa over three years, the agriculture ministry said. The Iowa MOUs involve purchases of corn, wheat, dried distillers grains and soybean meal, it added. Vietnam and the Trump administration have been holding negotiations on a trade agreement, with Vietnam pledging to allow more US imports to narrow the trade gap between the two countries. The US registered a trade deficit of US$123 billion with Vietnam last year. Vietnam last year bought US$3.4 billion worth of US farm produce, and exported US$13.68 billion of its own agricultural products to the US, Vietnam News Agency reported. Vietnam has also pledged to buy other American products, including Boeing planes and liquefied natural gas. It has also promised to crack down on counterfeits and digital piracy after the US accused the country of being a major hub for these illegal activities. REUTERS
