ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Germany said on Thursday that it welcomes the anticipated call from the leader and founder of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) Abdullah Ocalan for the group to lay down arms and dissolve itself.
A spokesperson for the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a statement that the German leader welcomes the move by Ocalan.
'The PKK is a banned terrorist organization in Germany, and its conflict has resulted in many casualties. Ocalan's request now finally creates an opportunity to overcome this violent struggle and achieve a permanent peaceful development in the Kurdish issue,' Scholz added.
Ocalan said in a letter, which was read out by the delegation that has visited him several times to mediate peace talks between Ankara and the PKK, that the PKK must convene and make a decision - 'all groups must lay down their arms, and the PKK must dissolve itself.'
'This offers a historic opportunity to break the decades-long spiral of terror, violence, and retaliation that has cost the lives of tens of thousands of people,' the German foreign ministry said in a statement.
'An end to the violence is the important first step, but further steps are needed on the way to a viable solution for the people of Turkey. This includes, above all, respecting and guaranteeing the cultural and democratic rights of the Kurds in Turkey,' the ministry added.
It also said that Germany is ready to support the process.

Alawite teen killed at checkpoint as sectarian violence surges in Syria

Shafaq News/ An 18-year-old Alawite man was shot dead at an armed group checkpoint in the town of Shin, west of Homs, on Wednesday, as Syria faces a sharp rise in sectarian killings and abductions following the collapse of al-Assad regime. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the teenager was riding to work with a companion on a motorcycle when they were stopped by gunmen affiliated with pro-government factions tied to the defense and interior ministries. The assailants questioned the pair about their sect before executing one and briefly detaining the other. The body remained at the scene for hours before their ID cards were found near the local police station. #المرصد_السوري تصاعد في حـ ـوادث الـ ـعـ ـنـ ـف الطائفي.. إعـ ـدام شابين أحدهما في #حمص والآخر في #حماة — المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان (@syriahr) June 11, 2025 The killing is one of several violent incidents reported in recent days. In rural Hama, a young shopkeeper was gunned down in his store in the village of Turkmen Musa by two masked men on a motorcycle. Despite a heavy security presence in the area, the attackers escaped, raising suspicions of insider involvement. #المرصد_السوري استمرارا لـ ـحـ ـوادث الـ ـعـ ـنـ ـف.. استشهاد مدني بـ ـرصـ ـاص عـ ـصـ ـابـ ـة مـ ـسـ ـلّـ ـحـ ـة في ريف #مصياف — المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان (@syriahr) June 11, 2025 Meanwhile, factions known as 'Hamzat' and 'Amshat' abducted three displaced Kurdish men from Afrin while they were traveling from Qamishli to Aleppo. US Embassy in Baghdad prepares for ordered departure

Shafaq News/ US Embassy in Baghdad prepares for ordered departure due to the hightened security risks in the region, an Iraqi security official and a US source told Reuters on Wednesday. According to Reuters, the US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The State Department is planning an organized departure from the US Embassy in Baghdad, aiming to carry it out through commercial means. However, the US military stands ready to assist if requested, another American official stated. Ealier, Iranian Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh warned Iran will target US bases in the region if nuclear talks lead to a conflict with Washington. Iran escalates its rhetoric ahead of talks: US will face heavy losses

Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh warned that any failure in nuclear negotiations could lead to war, with the United States facing 'heavier losses'. During a press briefing following a cabinet meeting, Nasirzadeh cautioned that threats from US officials about possible military action would backfire if diplomacy fails. 'We have the capability to target all US bases across the region without hesitation… The presence of American forces would become unsustainable in host countries.' Meanwhile, a new round of indirect nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington, brokered by Oman, is scheduled for Sunday in capital Muscat. Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful and denies seeking nuclear weapons, while Western powers demand safeguards to prevent Tehran from acquiring a bomb. Tehran and Washington have held five rounds of indirect talks since April, the highest-level engagement since Trump withdrew from the 2015 agreement and reimposed sanctions. Separately, the US and its European allies have submitted a resolution against Iran to the IAEA's Board of Governors, citing growing concerns over Tehran's nuclear activities.
