ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The town of Akre in Duhok province, considered the capital of Newroz, has prepared over 2,000 torches for the festival with tens of thousands expected to flock to the area to celebrate, its district mayor said Saturday.
'Newroz preparations in Akre started more than a month ago. Most of the preparations have been made and will be completed two days before Newroz,' Dilawar Bozo, Akre's district mayor, told Rudaw. 'More than 2,000 torches have been prepared.'
With Newroz falling in the holy month of Ramadan this year, Bozo said that celebrations will be different. 'We will have different activities, and artists and religious singers will participate in the ceremony.'
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani will also participate, and a large tent and suhoor - the meal consumed by Muslims before fasting during Ramadan - will be prepared, according to Bozo.
Kurds from all over the Kurdistan Region traditionally gather in the town of Akre to honor the ages-long tradition of lighting fires to welcome the New Year on the first day of spring.
Hundreds of thousands of people from the Kurdistan Region, as well as Kurdish regions in Turkey, Iran, and Syria, will celebrate the eve of Newroz on Wednesday, also symbolizing a day of freedom from tyranny and resistance.
'This year we have built another road to the mountain, one that goes up and one that goes down, but in two different directions,' Bozo added, predicting that over 70,000 tourists will visit for the festival.
Kurds celebrate Newroz on March 21-23 by picnicking in the countryside and lighting bonfires with their families and loved ones. The occasion is known as the Kurdish New Year.
Celebrations and festivities are held across the Kurdistan Region with hundreds of thousands of Kurds dancing in their colorful and traditional Kurdish clothes.

Alawite teen killed at checkpoint as sectarian violence surges in Syria

Shafaq News/ An 18-year-old Alawite man was shot dead at an armed group checkpoint in the town of Shin, west of Homs, on Wednesday, as Syria faces a sharp rise in sectarian killings and abductions following the collapse of al-Assad regime. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the teenager was riding to work with a companion on a motorcycle when they were stopped by gunmen affiliated with pro-government factions tied to the defense and interior ministries. The assailants questioned the pair about their sect before executing one and briefly detaining the other. The body remained at the scene for hours before their ID cards were found near the local police station. #المرصد_السوري تصاعد في حـ ـوادث الـ ـعـ ـنـ ـف الطائفي.. إعـ ـدام شابين أحدهما في #حمص والآخر في #حماة — المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان (@syriahr) June 11, 2025 The killing is one of several violent incidents reported in recent days. In rural Hama, a young shopkeeper was gunned down in his store in the village of Turkmen Musa by two masked men on a motorcycle. Despite a heavy security presence in the area, the attackers escaped, raising suspicions of insider involvement. #المرصد_السوري استمرارا لـ ـحـ ـوادث الـ ـعـ ـنـ ـف.. استشهاد مدني بـ ـرصـ ـاص عـ ـصـ ـابـ ـة مـ ـسـ ـلّـ ـحـ ـة في ريف #مصياف — المرصد السوري لحقوق الإنسان (@syriahr) June 11, 2025 Meanwhile, factions known as 'Hamzat' and 'Amshat' abducted three displaced Kurdish men from Afrin while they were traveling from Qamishli to Aleppo. Florida Imam Abu Usama At-Thahabi: Muslims Should Not Apologize for Jihad or Fear It; Obama Is a 'Devil'; We Must Show Non-Muslims the Dominance of Islam by Making Them Move to the Side of the Street

In a series of Friday sermons in May 2025 at Masjid As-Sunnah in Kissimmee, Florida, Imam Abu Usama At-Thahabi spoke about Muslims' relationship with non-Muslims and the concept of Jihad. In his May 16 sermon, At-Thahabi said that Jihad is part of a Muslim's manhood, emphasizing that Muslim men do not send their wives to wage Jihad on their behalf. He said that Muslims should defend their religion, not apologize for Jihad, and not be afraid of it. He added that Christians do not practice anything Jesus brought and that Jesus was not sent as a prophet to them. In a May 2 sermon, At-Thahabi said that while individuals such as President Jimmy Carter (whom he referred to as 'Peanut Man'), Mother Teresa, and Martin Luther King Jr. may have been 'great personalities,' they would not enter Paradise because they were born infidels and did not embrace Islam. He also called President Barack Obama a 'devil,' adding that Obama does not represent him or his community. At-Thahabi further cited a hadith stating that if a Muslim is walking down the street, he should compel non-Muslims to move to the more 'difficult' side of the path, in order to show them the 'dominance' of Islam.

New push for peace: Ocalan calls for dialogue with Kurdish figures

Shafaq News/ Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), has proposed launching talks with prominent Kurdish political and military figures, the pro-Kurdish DEM Party announced on Wednesday. Aysegul Dogan, spokesperson for the DEM Party—widely regarded as the successor to the sidelined Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP)—confirmed that preparations are underway for a visit to İmralı prison to meet Ocalan and discuss the framework for renewed political engagement. 'This step is essential for advancing the peace process,' she told reporters in Ankara. The proposed dialogue includes Masoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP); Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region; Bafel Talabani, head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK); and Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Nechirvan Barzani characterized Ocalan's recent outreach as 'a constructive step' that could revive stalled peace efforts, while Masoud Barzani has consistently supported peaceful resolution mechanisms, describing dialogue as 'the only viable path' to address Kurdish-Turkish disputes. PKK Strategy Shift The announcement follows the PKK's unilateral ceasefire declared on March 1, shortly after Ocalan issued a message urging the group to disarm and dissolve. In his statement, read publicly by DEM Party deputies on February 27, Ocalan described the pivot to political engagement as a 'historic responsibility' and called for the armed struggle to give way to democratic strategy. Despite his detention since 1999, Ocalan continues to serve as the PKK's ideological reference point and remains influential in shaping the group's direction, and his latest message is widely seen as the most serious overture toward reconciliation since the collapse of the 2013–2015 peace process. The PKK, designated as a terrorist organization by Turkiye, the United States, and the European Union, has fought an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984, a conflict that has left over 40,000 dead. Meanwhile, the DEM Party continues to advocate for Kurdish political inclusion under increasing legal pressure, as Turkish authorities pursue multiple cases to dissolve the party and prosecute its affiliates, alleging links to the PKK—claims the party denies.
