KUCHING, May 30 (Bernama) -- In celebrating this year's Gawai festivities, PETRONAS proudly presents 'Marked' or 'Tanda Kasih', a touching story that explores the power of personal resilience, the strength of family bonds, and the beauty of cultural pride.
In a statement, PETRONAS said the film, which premiered today across their official YouTube and Facebook channels, follows Melia, a young Iban girl, as she undergoes an emotional journey of self-acceptance, confronting the challenges of growing up with a prominent birthmark on her forehead.
As Gawai approaches, Melia is asked to wear the sugu tinggi, a traditional Iban woman's headdress that symbolises dignity and cultural heritage. However, doubt lingers in her heart as she wonders if she is truly worthy of bearing such a significant piece of tradition.
'Her silent struggles go largely unnoticed by her family, except for her grandmother, whose loving presence and gentle encouragement become a source of strength and guidance.
"More than a story of self-acceptance, 'Marked' celebrates the ties that unite us, family, and community, and reminds us that strength grows through connection and shared heritage,' the statement read.
PETRONAS Vice President of Group Strategic Relations and Communications, Norafizal Mat Saad said 'Marked' is a tribute to the strength within communities in Malaysia and the richness of the Iban tradition.
'At PETRONAS, we believe in the power of storytelling to celebrate the diversity and beauty of our people and cultures. It also reflects the values of unity and shared purpose, reminding us that when we stand together and support one another, we create space for everyone to belong and thrive,' he was quoted as saying.
Norafizal hoped that the story would encourage Malaysians to embrace their identity with pride and support each other in the journey of self-discovery.
In the spirit of the harvest season, PETRONAS also presents 'Crown of Love' or 'Mahkota Teristimewa', a Kaamatan story that celebrates community strength and the meaning of love.

(G)I-DLE & BamBam concert scrapped at organiser's request, not the government

PUTRAJAYA: The Communications Ministry has denied claims that the (G)I-DLE & BamBam Live in Malaysia concert, scheduled for June 14, was cancelled due to rejection by the Foreign Film and Foreign Artist Performance Application Committee (JK-Puspal). In a statement, the ministry said that based on JK-Puspal records, preliminary approval for the concert was granted on April 28. "JK-Puspal wishes to stress that claims the cancellation was due to a lack of approval from the committee are completely untrue. "The decision to cancel the concert was made at the organiser's request, taking into account their justifications and the interests of all parties involved. "In this regard, organisers must make thorough preparations, including obtaining early approvals from various relevant authorities, before holding a concert featuring prominent international artistes, as stipulated in the Puspal Guidelines (GPP)," the statement read. The concert organiser, Live Universe Sdn Bhd, announced the cancellation in a Facebook post on Monday, citing regulatory complications as the reason.

Thailand unveils landmark entertainment complex to boost economy, tourism

BANGKOK: Thailand has unveiled plans for a landmark "Thailand Entertainment Complex" project, aimed at boosting economic growth, attracting international tourists and strengthening its global competitiveness. Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said the project was part of efforts to position Thailand as a premier destination for world-class attractions. "The complex is envisioned as a new economic engine, fostering tourism revenue and creating innovative industries to ensure sustainable economic growth," he said in a statement on Thursday. The entertainment complex is anticipated to generate between 12 billion and 40 billion baht in annual tax revenue while creating thousands of jobs, he said. Julapun said the government has submitted a draft bill to the House of Representatives to establish a regulatory framework for the complex. Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister, Suksit Srichomkwan, said the complex will include a casino, which will operate under strict legal conditions and anti-money laundering measures. It will also feature concert halls, large convention and exhibition centres, amusement parks, museums, Michelin-starred restaurants, and green spaces for outdoor activities. The project will be financed by private investment, sparing public funds, he said. — BERNAMA
