Jury deliberations set to begin in ASAP Rocky's assault trial

CBS News18-02-2025

Jury deliberations in ASAP Rocky's assault trial are set to begin Tuesday morning.
The rapper, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, is on trial facing two felony counts of assault with a firearm. Rocky is accused of opening fire and shooting at his former friend, Terell Ephron near a Hollywood hotel in 2021.
Closing arguments were delivered last week after Ephron took the stand and testified that Rocky pulled a gun out and pointed it at him before firing shots. According to prosecutors, it was the first of two confrontations that day between Rocky and Ephron.
Rocky has pleaded not guilty to the counts and has maintained his innocence through statements by his attorneys. He turned down a plea deal from prosecutors last week which would have included 180 days in jail.
Rocky's legal team has been relying on video evidence claiming the gun shown was a prop. They said he had it with him for security reasons.
If he is convicted on all charges, Rocky could face a maximum possible sentence of 24 years in prison.
Rocky's longtime partner, Grammy award-winning artist Rihanna, has been seen at his trial. She has been accompanied by their two sons 2-year-old RZA Athelston Mayers and 1-year-old Riot Rose Mayers.
Why is ASAP Rocky on trial
Former friend and once a member of Rocky's hip hop collective, ASAP Mob, Ephron is accusing him of pulling a gun on him, shooting at him and threatening his life.
There were allegedly two confrontations between Ephron and Rocky outside of a Hollywood hotel in 2021. The first confrontation is described only as a scuffle.
Ephron claims that during the second confrontation which occurred a few moments after the first, Rocky pulled out a gun from his waistband and fired shots at him.
During the trial, Ephron told jurors Rocky said "I'll kill you right now" as he pointed the gun at him. He then said the gun was pointed "like towards my stomach, like towards like my head and shoulder," according to the Associated Press's livestream of the trial.
When questioned about the alleged incident, Ephron could not remember certain details.
Ephron testified last year that bullets fired by Rocky grazed his knuckles during the alleged incident. Meanwhile, Rocky's attorneys have argued the alleged victim is lying and the rapper was carrying a prop gun that only fired blanks.

Ameen Khalifa survived gunfire on a first trip to get food at Gaza's new aid hub, but not the second

Shootings have erupted multiple times in the last week in the vicinity of new aid hubs where desperate Palestinians are being directed to collect food, including on June 1 and June 3. Witnesses have told the Associated Press that it is nearby Israeli troops that have opened fire, and more than 80 people have been killed according to Gaza hospital officials. Israel has said soldiers fired warning shots or, in some cases, have shot towards 'suspects' approaching the troops in the areas nearby the aid centers. Ranking all the best bits you missed from Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter London tour dates

Beyoncé is in town, people! Queen Bey is currently halfway through her London leg of the Cowboy Carter Tour, and those who managed to secure tickets have witnessed music royalty in real-time. For those who didn't - or won't - be making it to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, we've resorted to catching the best bits through our phone screens. So, as Beyoncé takes it easy for a couple of days before taking back to the stage on 10th June, we thought now might be the perfect time to look back on the epic performances so far. Because honestly, there have been some pretty iconic moments. For all the Beyoncé sleuths out there, you'll likely have checked out the setlist way ahead of time. Of course, the tour is in support of her Grammy-winning album, Cowboy Carter, meaning the show revolves mostly around this era. However, that doesn't mean that plenty of her other hit songs are out of the question. Despite this, many were gutted when her 2022 Renaissance hit 'Break My Soul' was nowhere to be seen on lists... Until now. Thankfully, on 7th June, she performed it as a surprise song. And as you can hear from the crowd's screams, it was the correct artistic decision to make. During the opening London show, Beyoncé also performed her Renaissance track, 'Energy.' With that, she prompted fans to reenact the Renaissance World Tour staple, the "mute challenge." To recap, this is where fans go silent when she sings the lyrics "look around everybody on mute." In 2022, it made its way onto social media and became a viral TikTok sensation. "We got Donatella Versace in the house," Beyoncé told the crowd towards the end of the show on night two. Which is perhaps the reason fans were treated to some new looks. Continuing with her cowboy couture theme, she donned cowboy hats, boots and plenty of fringe. During 'Alliigator Tears,' she served a fresh fit consisting of a white top, white skirt, thigh-high boots and fringe gloves. Later, she donned a Versace ensemble complete with a ruffled dress with matching boots and gloves. It's the UK. Rain doesn't spare anyone, even Sasha Fierce. On night one, the heavens opened, but rather than fuming at the weather, fans seemed to embrace it. Many even called it iconic. One person said that the downpour during 'Bodyguard' was a vibe, while others said that the rain made Honey Balenciaga's section of the show "all the more iconic." It didn't seem to bother Queen Bey, either, as she told the crowd: "We won't let the rain stop us." Unfortunately, even during a Beyoncé show, things can't always be guaranteed to go 100% smoothly. It's how you deal with unprecedented mishaps that separates amateurs from pros. On the first night, while performing 'I'm That Girl,' Bey encountered a wardrobe malfunction during a choreographed moment. Her gold chaps literally fell down around her ankles, but rather than freaking out, she continued. Her expression didn't change, nor did she try and fix the problem. Rather, one of her dancers subtly slipped them back up, fastened them, and carried on with the performance. It wasn't until after the chaps were firmly back up that Beyoncé hilariously acknowledged the slick moment: she just laughed as if to say, "s**t happens." And finally, how could we leave out the sweetest moment of all? Beyoncé literally hyped up her eldest daughter, Blue Ivy, who has been a major part of the Cowboy Carter Tour, as she left the stage. Just look at how proud she is of her! Mother-daughter goals right there. There's a reason she's called Queen Bey.

Trump attends UFC championship fight in New Jersey, taking a break from Musk feud for cage fights

Associated Press NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — President Donald Trump walked out to a thunderous standing ovation just ahead of the start of the UFC pay-per-view card at the Prudential Center on Saturday night, putting his public feud with tech billionaire Elon Musk on hold to instead watch the fierce battles inside the cage. Trump was accompanied by UFC President Dana White and the pair headed to their cageside seats for UFC 316 to Kid Rock's 'American Bad Ass.' Trump and White did the same for UFC's card last November at Madison Square Garden, only then they were joined by Musk. Trump shook hands with fans and supporters — a heavyweight lineup that included retired boxing great Mike Tyson — on his way to the cage. Trump was joined by his daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, along with son Eric Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump shook hands with the UFC broadcast team that included Joe Rogan. Rogan hosted Trump on his podcast for hours in the final stages of the campaign last year. UFC fans went wild for Trump and held mobile devices in their outstretched arms to snap pictures of him. Trump is a longtime UFC enthusiast and frequent attendee of major fights. Trump arrived in time for the start of a card set to include two championship fights. Julianna Pena and Merab Dvalishvili were scheduled to each defend their 135-pound championships. UFC fighter Kevin Holland choked out Vicente Luque to win the first fight with Trump in the building. He scaled the cage and shook hands with Trump. He briefly chatted with Trump and White before he returned for his post-fight interview. Trump has been close to White for more than two decades. White hosted a 2001 UFC battle at Trump Taj Mahal, a former casino-hotel in Atlantic City, and Trump has frequently attended UFC matches since — including during his 2024 campaign. Trump has turned up at fights recently with famous entourages, including White, musician Kid Rock and former Fox News Channel host Tucker Carlson. Trump and White's alliance has yielded dividends for both parties. White stumped for Trump at Republican conventions while men who soak up fight nights threw their support behind Trump in the elections. ___ AP sports:
