THE fourth edition of the Allianz Junior Badminton Championship (AJBC) kicks off next month, continuing its mission to nurture young talents who may one day represent Malaysia on the world stage.
Allianz Malaysia Berhad chief executive officer Sean Wang said the insurance company was proud to provide a platform for junior players to sharpen their skills and enjoy the sport.
'We are honoured to play a part in producing quality badminton players who can contribute to the nation in the future,' he said.
'When people talk about junior development (in badminton), it is always about producing the next Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei or even the next Thomas Cup champions.
'For us at Allianz Malaysia, badminton is more than just pushing to be the best. It is also about enjoying the game, having fun with friends and learning discipline and teamwork.'
Wang said at the schoolgoing age, some talents might appear early while others would take time to mature.

'We are aware of this and our focus is on mass participation to grow a larger pool of players who can step up in the future,' he said.
World Junior Championship 2024 finalist Low Zi Yu clinched her third AJBC Girls' Under-15 title last year, while her doubles partner at the world event, Dania Sofea, is also an AJBC alumna.
In 2023, the tournament attracted more than 3,000 players nationwide.
A similar turnout is expected for this year's 10 qualifying rounds, starting with Klang from May 16 to 18.
Other hosts are Alor Setar, Taiping, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Gelang Patah, Kota Baru, Bukit Beruang, Bukit Mertajam and Kuantan.
The grand finals, scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur from Nov 5 to 9, will feature qualifiers from the Under-13 and Under-15 categories.
Twenty-four players per category will qualify from each round.
Under-11 players will not compete in the finals.
Participation in the AJBC qualifying rounds remains free of charge.
Winners will receive cash prizes, with top three finishers in the singles category receiving RM500, RM300 and RM150, while doubles winners will earn RM600, RM400 and RM200.
At the grand finals, the top three singles champions will take home RM1,000, RM600 and RM300 respectively, while doubles winners will receive each RM1,200, RM800 and RM400.

Girls rule the court in Allianz Junior Badminton Championship 2025 Qualifying Round 2

It was a field day for the girls at the second qualifying round of the Allianz Junior Badminton Championship (AJBC), with Low Hui Yein and Ng Yun Xi winning their singles and doubles events in the U-15 Girls' and U-13 Girls' categories respectively. The second qualifying round of the AJBC, which took place from May 30 to June 1, 2025 at the Wintel Sport Arena in Taiping, Perak, saw Low Hui Yein from SMJK Yuk Choy beating Ho Wen Jie of SMK Seafield to win the U-15 Girls' Singles, and partnering Yong Hui Teng from SMK Ayer Tawar in the U-15 Girls' Doubles to beat Chai Xiao Qing from SMJK Pei Yuan and Chang Zhi Qing of SMJK Shing Chung. This year marks Low's fourth participation in the AJBC, after making it to the Grand Finals in both the U-13 Girls' Singles and Doubles of the 2022 and 2023 editions, and the semifinals of the U-15 Girls' Singles and Doubles in 2024. 'I only train twice a week with my club (Falim BC) and twice more with the Perak Badminton Association. But the rest of the time, I spar with my father and my uncles, and that has made the difference for me. 'Sparring with them creates a competitive atmosphere where I'm playing against players older than me,' said Low, whose dream is to be an Olympic champion like her idol, South Korean badminton player An Se-young. Ng Yun Xi of Wesley Methodist School KL (International) defeated Nur Keisha Zulaika Binti Mohd Zulhasrad from SMK Putrajaya Presint 5(1) in the U-13 girls' singles. Ng then partnered Khor Pei Xuan of SMK Seri Bintang Selatan to clinch the top spot in the U-13 girls' doubles over Marissa Aisy Sofea Binti Muhammad Hasrul Nizam from SMK Putrajaya Presint 8(1) and Nur Keisha Zulaika. Meanwhile, Darwin Yeong Jun Bin from SMK St George defeated H'Ng Tze Hoong of SMK Desa Perdana to win the U-15 boys' singles. In the U-15 Boys' Doubles, Braxton Ling Liq Wei from SMK Methodist teamed up with Cheng Jia Hao from Yik Ching High School to emerge victorious over Muhamad Rafique Naufal Bin Muhamad Nizam of SMK King Edward V11 Taiping and Muhammad Daris Bin Idi Azhar of SMK Datuk Hj Abdul Wahab Perak. Loo Xuan Le of SMJK Yuk Choy nearly netted a double win too when he won the U-13 boys' singles over Phoon William from SMJK Sam Tet and partnered Wong Hong Bin from SMJK Hua Lian in the U-13 boys' doubles final. However, Phoon William ultimately got the better of him, winning the U-13 boys' doubles together with Lim Zi Xiong, also from SMJK Sam Tet. A total of 286 players took part in this tournament, the second Qualifying Round of 10 rounds which will culminate in the year-end Grand Finals. The AJBC Grand Finals 2025 featuring U-13 and U-15 finalists from all the qualifying rounds, will take place in Kuala Lumpur from Nov 5–9. Each round will see 24 players qualifying for the finals. The U-11 players will not advance to the AJBC Grand Finals. As in previous years, players participating in the AJBC Qualifying Rounds are not required to pay any entrance fees. The top three winners in the qualifying rounds, for all age categories, will earn RM500, RM300 and RM150 (singles) and RM600, RM400 and RM200 (doubles). Players finishing in the top three at the Grand Finals will pocket RM1,000, RM600 and RM300 (singles) and RM1,200, RM800 and RM400 (doubles).

Tze Yong's injury an issue for Jonassen in plan to assemble strong Thomas Cup squad

PETALING JAYA: National singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen is fully aware that the injury to his charge, Ng Tze Yong, could disrupt his plans to assemble the strongest line-up for the 2026 Thomas Cup. Although the tournament in Horsens, Denmark, is still about a year away, scheduled for April or May, Jonassen knows time is running short to build a formidable men's singles squad capable of mounting a strong challenge at the prestigious team competition. What makes the task even more daunting is his own admission that it would take a near miracle for any up-and-coming player to impress him enough to earn a spot in the Thomas Cup squad. At present, the men's singles squad comprise just five players, among them Leong Jun Hao, Justin Hoh, Eogene Ewe and young talent Kong Zhou Swin, who was recently promoted to the senior team. As such, Jonassen and the singles coaching team are focused on sharpening the skills of these existing players to ensure they are able to compete with the top names in the sport. 'Now, the injury to Tze Yong obviously affects things a little, but we'll see. Overall, I'm working towards a goal where we can produce a line-up that's capable of challenging the best. 'Of course, purely based on world rankings, we're not at the level of the top nations. They are ranked much higher, and unless we do something spectacular over the next eight to 10 months, we won't surpass them in the rankings. 'With less than 12 months to go before this major championship, I would be very surprised if a junior player could make the kind of progress needed to perform at that level. So we'll be coming in as underdogs. But for me, it's about being able to deliver a strong performance, and potentially that crucial win, on the day it matters most,' said Jonassen. At the same time, Jonassen is not ready to disclose the details of Tze Yong's injury, despite rumours that the 25-year-old suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during his first-round match against Angus Ng Ka Long at the Malaysian Masters two weeks ago. It is a tough situation for Tze Yong, who only made his return in April after a year-long break due to a back injury. The injury sustained by Tze Yong has forced him to withdraw from last week's Singapore Open and this week's Indonesian Open.
