CCHF: Iraq's Kirkuk intensifies prevention efforts
Shafaq News/ On Sunday, health authorities in Kirkuk announced a series of preventive measures to curb the spread of Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) in the province.
Talat Mahmoud Bakr, the Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Kirkuk, reported to Shafaq News that discussions took place with the Kirkuk Governor, the district mayor, and the Director-General of the province's Health Directorate. The outcome was a complete ban on the movement of livestock into and out of the province.
Additionally, the construction of unauthorized animal pens has been prohibited, and the raising of livestock within residential areas is banned to protect public health. Unlicensed butcher shops failing to comply with health regulations will also be shut down.
Following the discussions, plans were set to intensify spraying, dipping, and epidemiological surveillance campaigns across Kirkuk. Public awareness campaigns will be expanded, and residents have been urged to promptly report any suspected cases of the disease.
According to Shafaq News' tracker, 27 cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) have been recorded nationwide since the beginning of the year, including four fatalities.
CCHF, which is transmitted by tick bites or contact with infected animal blood, is highly contagious and can be fatal in more than 40% of cases, particularly if not treated promptly.

Israeli airstrikes pound Gaza: Dozens killed
Shafaq News/ Dozens of Palestinians were killed on Monday as Israeli airstrikes targeted multiple areas across the Gaza Strip, amid an exchange of attacks between Israeli forces and Palestinian factions. According to Arab media outlets, the strikes targeted the upper floor of Al-Ayesha School, which was sheltering displaced families in Deir al-Balah, and the dialysis center at the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza. Civil defense teams reported five people killed in an airstrike on the al-Samouni family home in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, with others believed to be trapped under the rubble. In Jabalia, the death toll from an earlier Israeli strike on the al-Barsh family home rose to 16, while additional casualties were reportedly confirmed following strikes on Umm Zuhair in southern Deir al-Balah and Gaza Old Street in northern Jabalia. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) revealed that its teams had responded to mass casualties at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, where patients described being shot at from multiple directions while attempting to collect food. Yesterday, our teams at Nasser hospital in Gaza received people who were wounded while waiting near a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation food distribution site, showing once again that "this new system of aid delivery is dehumanising, dangerous and severely ineffective."… — MSF International (@MSF) June 2, 2025 Gaza's Health Ministry stated that the total number of casualties from Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023, has reached 54,470 deaths and 124,693 injuries. Since March 18 alone, at least 4,201 people have been killed and 12,652 wounded. The ministry noted that many victims remain unaccounted for in inaccessible areas. Meanwhile, the Israeli Military Spokesperson Avichay Adraee announced in a post on X that Israel had carried out a precision airstrike in Deir al-Balah targeting what it described as a Hamas command and control compound used to plan and coordinate attacks. — افيخاي ادرعي (@AvichayAdraee) June 2, 2025 Palestinian armed factions, in turn, reported new operations against Israeli forces. Saraya al-Quds claimed responsibility for detonating a powerful explosive under an Israeli Humvee east of Gaza City and published footage of artillery attacks and a vehicle explosion in Khan Younis. The Al-Qassam Brigades said it targeted an Israeli tank using a Shuaz explosive and a Yasin-105 shell in the Qizan al-Najjar area of southern Gaza.

Gaza's lifeline crumbles: Israel kills 60 civilians as hospitals fail
Shafaq News/ Israel's ongoing assault on Gaza killed 60 Palestinians and injured 284 others in the past 24 hours, Gaza's Health Ministry reported on Saturday, as the territory's healthcare system teeters on collapse. The renewed attacks pushed the total death toll to 54,381 since October 7, 2023, with injuries surpassing 124,000. Health officials reported that hospitals are barely functioning after three major power generators were destroyed, crippling surgery, intensive care, emergency, and neonatal services. 'Medical teams are out of parts and out of options,' the ministry reported, warning that the generator damage is beyond repair. The World Food Programme also raised alarms, describing the crisis as 'spiraling.' It attributed the deterioration to sealed borders, rising hunger, and disrupted aid deliveries, stressing that only a ceasefire could restore safe humanitarian access. The humanitarian situation in #Gaza is spiraling. WFP has enough food to feed all 2.2M people for 2 months. A ceasefire is the only way to deliver it safely. — World Food Programme (@WFP) May 31, 2025 The warnings come as diplomatic efforts intensify. US President Donald Trump announced from the Oval Office on Friday that a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas is nearing completion and could be finalized within the next 48 hours.
