Kylian Mbappe bites back over PSG's Champions League win and Luis Enrique dig

Daily Mirror13 hours ago

Kylian Mbappe left Paris Saint-Germain for Real Madrid last summer in the hope of winning the Champions League, but it was the French side who actually lifted the European Cup this year
Kylian Mbappe has insisted he does not feel bitter over Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League win. The French side finally won Europe's most desired crown last week by smashing Inter Milan in the final in Munich.
It is the first time PSG have won the European Cup in their history and fulfills a long-held ambition for the club. They have been desperate to win the Champions League ever since being taken over by the Qatar state back in 2011.

That desperation saw them assemble a Galactico-filled side containing Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Neymar and Mbappe himself. But they failed to follow through on their promise, wwith all four leaving by last summer.

Mbappe was the final one to remain at the Parc des Princes, before joining Real Madrid on a free transfer, citing the desire to win the game's biggest prizes. After leading PSG to the crown, boss Luis Enrique made a sly dig at Mbappe, insisting he could have been part of the historic team.
Enrique said: 'We would have loved to have him, but his decision was different. We've shown that we have stars at the service of the team, and not the other way around.'
Mbappe though has now fired back at Enrique, insisting he made the right decision to move on. He also revealed that he did indeed watch the final and hailed his former team-mates for their efforts.
"Did I leave too soon? No," he said on Saturday. "My story was over, it had to end. No bitterness, I had reached the end of the road. I would have tried anything. It was just fate that meant it had to happen without me.
"I was in Morocco, I watched the match at the Fairmont in Marrakech. Do you want all the details? I was happy, they deserve it, they've been through so much trouble, I've been through that too.

"I've been through every stage of the Champions League except the victory. They were the best team in Europe. I don't remember seeing a 5-0. It's 100% deserved, they're becoming the team everyone wants to beat."
Mbappe recovered from a difficult start at Madrid to score 43 goals in 56 games, though they failed to win a major trophy. But the Frenchman hit back at suggestions that the season was a failure, pointing to Madrid winning the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
"A blank season? Are you sure? What's a blank season? What's a blank season? Do you watch the matches? We won two titles. That's the importance of words. We missed out on important titles," Mbappe added.

"This year has been enriching. PSG winning the Champions League without me, it doesn't affect me. It's a good thing. I think that in a career we all have challenges. I'm a little more in the eye of the storm, it's good.
"I've always liked being in these positions, it's up to me to work. I've reversed a lot of trends in my career, a lot of things were pinned on me, and I managed to get them off my chest. It's up to me to work."

Arsenal release statement as Benjamin Sesko vs Viktor Gyokeres decision made

Arsenal appear to have finally made a decision between RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko and Sporting Lisbon goal machine Viktor Gyokeres after lengthy deliberations Arsenal's number one priority in the summer transfer window is to sign a world-class centre-forward - and they are now getting close to making that wish a reality. The Gunners know they need to spend big on a striker after finishing second in the Premier League for the third straight campaign, while also coming up short in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Mikel Arteta has been assured by the club's hierarchy that there is money to spend on the right player. ‌ "We plan to invest to get behind winning and doing better next season," co-chairman Josh Kroenke said recently. "We're delighted we have our sporting director, Andrea [Berta], who will play an important role in this. He is part of a unified and strong team, supported by the board, who are crystal clear on exactly what we need to do and the way in which we want to do it. The right way. The Arsenal way." ‌ Arsenal moved closer to signing a back-up goalkeeper on Saturday by agreeing a deal to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea for £5million. Kepa spent last season on loan with Bournemouth and now appears set to join the Gunners as a back-up to David Raya. And the club now seems to have settled on another right player for their Arsenal way. Read on to find out the latest in their search. Talks over £60m Sesko deal Arsenal appear to have chosen Benjamin Sesko over Viktor Gyokeres this summer, with talks ongoing over a £60million transfer. The Gunners were interested in signing Sesko from RB Leipzig last summer, but he decided to stay another season. Now it seems he's ready to move. The German club are willing to sell the Slovenia international for the right price. And they have asked the Slovenian Football Association to omit Sesko from their friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday in a clear sign that a deal could be struck soon. The 22-year-old has lots of fans at Arsenal, who believe his performance stats are more impressive than Gyokeres', due to the higher level in the Bundesliga, compared to the Portuguese top flight. Arsenal release Jorginho statement ‌ The Gunners have confirmed that Jorginho is departing the club early in order to join Brazilian club Flamengo in time to feature in the Club World Cup in the United States. Jorginho was due to leave when his deal expired on June 30, but has left earlier. Arsenal said in a statement: "The club can confirm that we have reached a mutual agreement with Jorginho to end his contract with immediate effect. Thank you for everything and all the best, Jorgi" The Gunners are set to say goodbye to 17 players at the end of the month, with Jorginho's replacement already lined up in the form of Martin Zubimendi, who is expected to join from Real Sociedad for £51m. ‌ Man Utd lead Gyokeres race Arsenal going for Sesko over Gyokeres has helped Manchester United take the lead in the race for the Swedish striker. Gyokeres worked with Ruben Amorim at Sporting Lisbon and could be reunited with him next season. Sir Jim Ratcliffe's drastic cost-cutting at Old Trafford could help them get to the front of the queue for Gyokeres, who is expected to demand in excess of £200,000 per week to join. The 27-year-old is likely to cost around £65m - around the same figure as Sesko, who is five years younger. Gyokeres could lead the line alongside Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo at United next season. Cunha is joining for £62.5m from Wolves, while United have offered Brentford £55m plus £5m in bonuses for Mbeumo. Franck Ribery hits back at Cristiano Ronaldo in escalating Ballon d'Or row

Franck Ribery has previously expressed his displeasure at missing out on the Ballon d'Or in 2013 to five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo and has once again hit out at the Portuguese forward Franck Ribery has mocked Cristiano Ronaldo 's claim about the Ballon d'Or after he revealed his three favourites. The latest iteration of the award is set to be handed out in a glitzy ceremony in Paris in September. Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele is among the favourites after helping the French side to the Champions League for the first time. Lamine Yamal and Mohamed Salah have also been mentioned as contenders for the award. ‌ Meanwhile, five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo has offered his take on this year's frontrunners and claimed that Dembele could be the favourite after his European success. He said: 'The individual awards have lost some consensus, I can't say anything about who should win. ‌ 'In my opinion, those who stand out and win the Champions League should win. But there is no consensus. 'I don't believe much in individual awards because I know what goes on behind the scenes. Lamine [Yamal] could win, like [Ousmane] Dembele or Vitinha, other emerging players… but individual awards are irrelevant.' Ribery has since replied with a scathing comment on social media. 'So you NEED to win the Champions League to win the Ballon d'Or?,' Ribery asked on Twitter alongside three laughing emojis. It is not the first time that Ribery has expressed his annoyance at missing out on the Ballon d'Or. The Frenchman was among the front-runners for the award back in 2013 after helping Bayern Munich to the Champions League crown. But he ended up finishing third behind Messi and Ronaldo - the latter claiming the crown with 27.99% of the votes. And that is a call that still wrangles with Ribery to his day. ‌ Who should win this year's Ballon d'Or? Share your thoughts in the comments below 'It was unfair," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport earlier this year. "It was an incredible season for me, and I should have won it. They extended the time for votes, and something strange happened. I felt that it was a political choice." Ronaldo has since added a further three Ballon d'Ors to his collection, his last coming in 2017 when he was still with Real Madrid. His former teammates Luka Modric and Karim Benzema have won the award since, with Messi also scooping a further two. Manchester City midfielder Rodri is the current holder after becoming the first Premier League player since Ronaldo in 2008 to win the award. Jude Bellingham's girlfriend Ashlyn Castro and his mum spotted in the stands at England match - one week after influencer's social media return

Jude Bellingham 's girlfriend Ashlyn Castro sat shoulder to shoulder with his mother Denise on Saturday. The pair watched on as the Real Madrid star put in a 90-minute shift during England's 1-0 win against Andorra, which extended Thomas Tuchel 's 100 per cent record at the helm. Harry Kane found the breakthrough five minutes into the second half, after a chance from just yards away was put on a plate for him by Noni Madueke - the nation's all-time top-goalscorer could not miss. At recent matches, fans suggested that there may be tension between Castro, 27, and Denise, 57. But at their latest outing, all seemed well between the two as they stood next to each other as they cheered on Bellingham, 21. With the temperature in the mid 20s in sun-soaked Catalonia, Castro wore a waist-snatching red dress, while Denise sported a white zip-up top and black athletic trousers with white stripes. When Castro accompanied Denise to watch a match in March, many fans picked up on what they thought was a frosty interaction. As the TV cameras panned to the high-end area where Denise was watching the game, a screengrab that circulated on social media appeared to show her giving a side-eye to Castro. A side-eye glance is usually interpreted as expressing disapproval or contempt towards somebody and fans were quick to react to the moment. However, it has since been revealed that the screengrab took their interaction out of context. The start of Castro's relationship with Bellingham was marred by claims about her past along with an escort site hoax. This led to her taking a four-month break from social media, only returning last week, with Bellingham quick to react to her post. She was previously linked with Hollywood actor Michael B Jordan and NBA stars LaMelo Ball and Terance Mann, while a viral video also claimed that Castro had dated Lewis Hamilton and Jamie Foxx after making tenuous links between social media activity. And, in an emotional monologue on TikTok of more than 10 minutes, Castro, who has more than 600,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok, put to bed several false rumours. 'I don't even know where to begin, but I'm going to try my best to just get into it,' she said in a video that was titled 'The hardest part is not speaking the truth, but finding the courage to do it'. She went onto debunk several claims made about her, including allegations of being unfaithful. 'It makes me super uncomfortable talking on camera about my personal life,' Castro added. 'I've never even really spoken on camera too many times, so bear with me. 'Every angle you can think of, people have attacked me, harassed me, been so disrespectful. It's just been too much. 'Let's talk about this dating history. I've had three boyfriends over the last eight years. In 2017, I was in my very first relationship and he's a public figure, so because of that, I've dealt with people talking about me, making up things about me. 'There was nothing on the internet about me prior, so people kind of just made up a bunch of things to justify hating me because of who I was dating at the time. 'And then over the last six years after that, I've dated two people. So three relationships in total.'
