Man who lost half his body weight praised by football legend
A MAN who lost almost half his body weight after joining a football team won a national award for his achievement - and joked with a soccer legend at the ceremony. Max Shearer, 27, who lives in Weymouth, made news last year after losing 10 stone in 15 months through MAN V FAT Weymouth, an FA-accredited football-based healthy lifestyle programme. He made the decision to lose weight after he broke two office chairs in his workplace and is now close to losing 50 per cent of his body weight. He has since lost an impressive total of 12.5 stone, just half a stone short of 50 per cent of his body weight. For his achievements, he was named Most Valuable Player at the national awards for the programme, receiving his award from former England and Arsenal player Paul Merson at a special event at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. The Most Valuable Player is defined as the one person a club can't do without - the top contributor on the pitch, on the scales or in other weekly challenges. Max Shearer with Paul Merson at the MAN V FAT awards in London (Image: MAN V FAT) Talking about the awards ceremony, Max said: "We had a massive football game called the Amazing Losers game due to the fact that we have lost the most weight which was great fun before the awards the next day. "I was up for two awards, this and the Amazing Loser award, and wasn't expecting to win. I'm a Spurs fan so I had to put Paul Merson in his place after we won another European trophy but it was great banter and an insane experience." Speaking again about his journey, Max said: 'When I broke the first chair, my work colleagues just told me they were old or rubbish chairs but the second time it happened, it was clear there was a reason why those chairs broke so easily. I was exploring various avenues about how I could lose weight and then MAN v FAT was recommended by a man at the local gym.' Max says it has been the accountability and the community that meant he kept going every week: 'The support and everything they gave me, not just with losing weight but also mental health was the reason I kept coming back every week. 'It's a subject that isn't noticed enough when it comes to men's weight loss. But the accountability and the community gave me support in so many aspects of my life other than just weight loss. MAN v FAT Weymouth is such an incredible group of guys, and I really would encourage anyone to take that first step at join MAN v FAT. It is so worth it.' Max before his weight loss journey (Image: Max Shearer) The next target for Max is to reach his 50 per cent weight loss milestone: 'I'm about a few kilograms away from my 50 per cent and that would be a real achievement but if I can inspire anyone to try and go on a similar route that would be great. 'I'm now approaching a much healthier body weight and anyone who can do that, they are the real winners. It doesn't matter what shiny trophy you get - if you're becoming fitter and healthier, that is the real win.' Around 8,500 men currently take part at more than 150 MAN v FAT Football clubs across the UK. Aimed at men with a BMI of higher than 27.5, the total amount of weight lost by MAN v FAT players in the UK currently stands at more than 800,000 pounds. At sessions, players are weighed, this is followed by a 30-minute game of six-a-side football, with extra goal bonuses awarded to teams based on their weight loss. A team's total weight loss and match scores then contribute to its position within a club's overall league table The Weymouth club meets on Monday evenings at the Redlands Community Sports Hub, Dorchester Road. Basketball committee rails against MOV Margin of Victory and neutral locations for state quarterfinal games were the two main topics of discussion during Wednesday's virtual MIAA Basketball Committee meeting. Much of the meeting was spent discussing options for altering the margin of victory cap, which is set at 10 points. 'Our committee suggested 1 [point max MOV] but that hasn't been supported by the [Tournament Management Committee],' said Dover-Sherborn boys' basketball coach Rick Grady , one of the coaches' reps on the committee. 'Maybe we could suggest a smaller number than 10? We've heard of situations where teams didn't foul at the end of games if you're down 4 or 5 and are afraid of losing by 10.' Advertisement Whitman-Hanson athletic director Bob Rodgers , a vocal opponent of the MOV, expressed reticence to changing the number on the fly. 'I will grant that the results have been OK,' Rodgers said. 'I wouldn't want to change it so the results aren't OK, but we're still dealing with MOV. Until it's fixed, I'd rather not touch it, even though I used to be a proponent for making it 1.' Related : Always pragmatic, St. Mary's AD and girls' basketball coach Jeff Newhall stepped in. 'It's a waste of time to try to reduce it to 1, it's not going to happen,' he warned. 'But maybe two possessions plus one? Whether that's 5 or 7? There may be some changes we could make, like in lacrosse where they changed it from 10 to 7.' MIAA liaison Peter Smith explained that the numbers have been crunched with MOV set at 5 and 7, noting that switching to an MOV of 7 would have resulted in the same boys' basketball teams making the tournament in all five divisions, although their seedings would have shifted. On the girls' side, two teams would have moved into the playoff brackets, with two teams moving out across five divisions. 'I've seen [the data] at 5 and 7 and there's very little change,' Newhall said, also noting that running the data with a small boost for wins also produced negligible changes. Related : Advertisement The committee decided to review data of every possible MOV between 1 and 10 before reconvening in the fall to craft a proposal for the TMC. Last fall, the committee voted unanimously for neutral sites in the Round of 8, but were denied by the TMC. But after hockey's quarterfinals were moved to neutral sites, there was hope on the basketball committee that the TMC would reconsider. 'I'm optimistic it could change,' said Newhall. 'It's on the [TMC] docket.' For those data-lovers out there: The 2024-25 MIAA basketball season featured 6,993 regular-season games, followed by 417 tournament games. On the boys' side, 58.4 percent of teams qualified for the tournament, while 62 percent of the girls' teams reached the playoffs. 7. College corner Medfield graduate Jack Goodman , a junior shortstop at Northeastern, was named All-Coastal Athletic Association for a second straight season, earning a spot on the first team with a .333 average, 10 homers, and 49 RBIs. Three position players earned First Team honors - Cam Maldonado and Jack Goodman each join Harry on the All-CAA First Team, both earning All-Conference honors for the second time in their careers! 🎉 — Northeastern Baseball (@GoNUbaseball) Joining Goodman on the All-CAA First Team were a trio of Northeastern pitchers from the Bay State: Aiven Cabral , a St. Mary's graduate, Will Jones , a Hamilton-Wenham graduate, and Charlie Walker , a Milton graduate. Cabral, a junior righthander, went 10-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 80⅔ innings. Jones, a lefthanded gradate student, went 10-0 with a 1.99 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 63⅓ innings. Cabral and Jones tied the Northeastern program record for single-season wins. Walker, a junior righty, was 3-0 with a 1.27 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 42⅔ innings. Jordan Gottesmann , a lefthanded graduate student from Acton-Boxborough, was named to the All-CAA second team and senior Brett Dunham , a North Andover graduate, was an honorable mention. Advertisement Bryant third baseman Pat D'Amico , a St. John's Prep graduate from Lynnfield who previously played at Holy Cross, was named to the All-America second team after hitting .247 with eight homers and 39 RBIs in 43 games. He made just two errors in the field for a .961 fielding percentage. Congrats to Charlie Saul, Pat D'Amico and Gavin Noriega on earning Second Team All-America East honors! — Bryant Baseball (@_BryantBaseball) Bryant's Kyle Rizy , a Worcester Academy graduate from Fiskdale, was also named to the All-America second team as a reliever after posting a 7-0 record, 3.53 ERA, and 39 strikeouts in 35⅔ innings. UMass Dartmouth senior Connor Richard , a Plymouth North graduate, was named to the 2025 USTFCCCA All-Region Team for the fourth time after winning a Little East title in the javelin. Corsairs freshmen Ancil Alexander , a Taunton High graduate, and Sean Patrone , a Wilmington graduate, were named to the All-Region team for the first time after Alexander was a Division 3 New England champion in the discus and shot put and Patrone won a Little East championship in the high jump. St. John's Prep, Newton North girls repeat as Division 1 Relays champions
'Respect the competition, because Division 1 is so freaking competitive. It's so hard.' Junior Ahmir Hykel, sophomore Dayvian Sullivan, and juniors Aaron Radke and Andrew McManmon set a meet record with a blazing finish in the 4x100-meter relay (41.89). The Eagles were first in the sprint medley (3:31.78), and senior Anthony Ragosa won the shot put (53 feet, 2¾ inches). It was the 23rd fastest time in the country, according to the MSTCA. Advertisement John Wilson (left cemter) is congratulated by his relay mates after finishing off BC High's victory in the 4x1600 race, setting a new Division 1 relay meet record of 17:47.58. Debee Tlumacki In the girls' meet, Newton North defended its title with 82 points, followed by Lexington (74) and Weymouth (60). 'We have a deep roster of jumpers and sprinters, and they all performed to expectation today,' said Newton North coach Mike Travers. 'We practiced hard for the last 10 days. They knew what they wanted to do and they performed.' Advertisement In the 4x200, sophomores Sophie Finkelstein and Mia Mescher, and juniors Bella Mangada and Brooke Bennett won the relay with a school-record finish in 1:43.95. Travers said that time qualifies them for the National Championship meet in Philadelphia. Central Catholic's Kyla Breslin has the lead on Newton North's Ciara Evans here, but the Tiger runner tracked her down to capture victory in the sprint medley relay in 4:08.30. Debee Tlumacki 'Going in, we were a bit nervous because it's normally head-to-head with Lexington. They're a really good team,' said Bennett. 'But we had a lot of confidence.' 'Lexington pushes us the most,' added Mangada. 'Having them as competition helps us run faster times.' Lillian Hayduk provided an exciting stretch for Weymouth. First she ran third in the 4x100 shuttle hurldes. Teammates Leah Goodine, Christina Marshall, and Ainsley Weber joined in for a time of 1:06.02 to win by two-hundredths of a second over Natick. Hayduk then went from the finish line to her next event, the long jump, where she tied for 26th in an event won by Lexington junior Aubrey Deardorf (19-0). 'Lillian probably had the best hurdle race of her life, and five minutes later, she had to get on the board and jump big for us,' said Weymouth coach Mike Miller. 'All four of those girls ran incredible. I couldn't be prouder of them. They were amazing today.' The Lexington girls 4x1600 relay team celebrate their win, after clocking a combined time of 21:02.02, some 55 seconds ahead of second-place Weymouth. Debee Tlumacki Lenny Rowe can be reached at
