MK Party demands full bid record for energy tender awarded to former Eskom exec Oberholzer

JOHANNESBURG - The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party says it wants full disclosure of the bid-adjudication records, after a multibillion-rand energy tender was awarded to a company headed up by former Eskom executive, Jan Oberholzer.
On Friday, the electricity department announced the preferred bidders of its Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme.
Out of the five available projects, four were awarded to the renewable energy company, Mulilo Energy.
In September 2023, Mulilo appointed Oberholzer as its chairperson just two months after he left Eskom as its chief operating officer.
MK Party national spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela said: "The MK Party has written formally to the minister of electricity and energy, demanding full disclosure of the bid adjudication records within seven days. Should the minister fail to comply, the MK Party will immediately approach the courts to interdict and suspend these contracts."

'Zuma usleg': Mbalula on Shivambu's removal as MK Party secretary-general

Mbalula previously said Shivambu would not last in the MK Party, predicting he would probably suffer from a 'cabinet reshuffle'. He mocked Shivambu's decision to leave the EFF for the MK Party. 'I heard Floyd Shivambu said he won't come to the ANC because I don't want him. I don't know Floyd, I only know him through [EFF leader] Julius Malema's introductions. Please pray for Shivambu. I don't believe he will last a year in Jacob Zuma's MK Party.' Social media users have shared their thoughts on Shivambu's removal. Media personality Dan Corder drew parallels between Shivambu's story and that of Icarus, known for his tragic story in Greek mythology. 'Floyd Shivambu is the story of Icarus. Icarus made wings of feathers and wax so he could fly. This made him think he was more powerful than he was. He flew too high, too close to the sun, though everyone warned him not to,' he said. Former ANC councillor Andile Lungisa expressed support for Shivambu. 'We feel your pain, Shivambu. We know that deep down this decision must be deeply painful for you. As one of those who served with you in the ANCYL 2008 generation, I say this without fear of contradiction: we will never desert you,' he said. Here are more reactions:

Main opposition parties reject Treasury's assertion of pro-poor budget

CAPE TOWN - The main opposition parties in Parliament have rejected the National Treasury's assertion that the national budget is pro-poor and not one of austerity. The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party also slammed the National Treasury's economic growth projections, saying it consistently gets it wrong. The party told a joint meeting of the finance committees that it believes the hike in the fuel levy will also have a severe impact on growth. The meeting on Wednesday finalised its report on the fiscal framework, which underpins the budget's money bills. The MK Party's Des van Rooyen said the National Treasury is being overly optimistic on its GDP growth projection of 1.4% for this year. We are speaking about something that is well recorded. National Treasury has been missing its targets for the past 10 years.' The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)'s Omphile Maotwe, meanwhile, insisted government's economic reform programme Operation Vulindlela won't lead to the desired economic growth. 'Just go look at what the public-private partnerships are doing in the State-owned entities. We are not saying we are closing them out. But there's nothing they are bringing to the table. I can assure you.' Former Transnet chief executive, Brian Molefe, now an MK Member of Parliament (MP), backed Maotwe, who also previously worked at the freight company, saying during his tenure, the company was profitable.

'Aya kwini yena?': Malema responds to Shivambu's redeployment in the MK Party

JOHANNESBURG - Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has reacted to Floyd Shivambu's redeployment in the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, implying that he may not have understood what he was getting himself into. Shivambu was removed from his position as secretary-general of the party on Tuesday, largely due to his visit to fugitive prophet Shepherd Bushiri's church in Malawi. He has since been deployed to Parliament, where he will now be forced to rub shoulders with his former colleagues in the EFF. Malema reacted to Shivambu's redeployment on the sidelines of his visit to the home of late actor Presley Chweneyagae on Wednesday. 'Yena aya kwini?' is a Xitsonga phrase that translates to "where was he or she going?". This is how Malema responded to Shivambu's redeployment in the MK Party. 'I don't work with Floyd anywhere. Parliament, soccer match or anything. I don't want to involve myself. Aya kwini yena? So it's not our problem.' A visibly unbothered Malema smiled as he was questioned about Shivambu's removal as the MK Party's secretary-general. Malema said Shivambu's presence on the MK Party's parliamentary benches won't have any impact on the EFF. 'The Parliament now is run by young boys. If he comes there and thinks he'll impose himself on them, they are ready for him.' He said Shivambu will have to make peace with his political choices.
