Real Madrid sign Argentina teenager Mastantuono on six-year deal
Real Madrid have signed 17-year-old midfielder Franco Mastantuono from Argentine side River Plate on a six-year contract, the LaLiga club said on Friday.
The Spanish outfit had agreed to sign Mastantuono for about $45 million last week and the talented teenager, who can also play on the wing, will be a Real Madrid player from August 14.
Having come through River Plate's youth system, Mastantuono was part of the first team in the 2024-25 season. In February last year, he becane the youngest scorer in River's history.
He also became the youngest at 17 to play an official match for Argentina when he featured in their World Cup qualifier against Chile last week.
Mastantuono had been linked to top European clubs such as Manchester United and Paris St Germain after a stunning free kick in River Plate's Superclasico win over Boca Juniors in April put him on the map.
Mastantuono is Real's third close-season recruit after they signed Premier League defenders Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold. REUTERS

NEW DELHI - After Manu Bhaker became the first Indian shooter to win two medals at the same Olympics in Paris last year, the country seems to have unearthed a new talent in 19-year-old Suruchi Phogat, who won her third consecutive ISSF World Cup gold in Munich on Friday. Phogat (241.9) edged out Paris Olympics silver medallist Camille Jedrzejewski (241.7) of France in a nail-biting finish of the 10m air pistol event to maintain her unbeaten streak this season. China's Qianxun Yao won bronze with 221.7. Phogat was trailing Jedrzejewski by 0.5 going into the final two shots and the Indian surged ahead with a tremendous 10.5, which proved decisive in the end. She won back-to-back World Cup golds in Buenos Aires and Lima, edging out compatriot Bhaker in the final in Peru. Phogat was also part of India's 10 metre air pistol mixed team, which won the bronze in Buenos Aires and the gold in Lima. She now possesses an enviable record of making the podium in every World Cup event she has taken part in. "This third successive gold medal is the toughest of all as it was a high-and-low final for me and taught me a lot of things," Phogat told the Indian Express. "Things did not work my way midway in the final. I guess my hands were a bit tired... "I had to make some adjustments and I'm glad to win this title here in Munich." India's chief pistol coach Samresh Jung said Phogat would emerge mentally stronger from such an intense final. "Shooters have to go through every phase and it should have taught her a lot of things," Jung told the same newspaper. "In the second series, she only had one bad shot and did not drop much in terms of other four shots and the same with the elimination shot." It is a dream come true for Matheus Cunha to move to Manchester United from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Action Images via Reuters LONDON – Manchester United's stadium will not feel entirely unfamiliar to Matheus Cunha when the Brazilian makes his home debut for his new team next season. It is almost like he has been playing at Old Trafford for years. A day after United completed the signing of Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, the dynamic forward said he grew up in the Brazilian beach city of Joao Pessoa dreaming of one day playing for the club. 'It is hard to find a way to explain this club to me,' the 26-year-old told United's in-house media. 'My house didn't have the channel to watch the Premier League. My cousin's house didn't have the channel. 'Only in my grandma's house, we can watch the Premier League, so we organised to go every weekend. And for me, it was always a bit inside of me, this club. When I play with (my cousin) in the street, on the beach, on the gravel pitch, we called these pitches 'Old Trafford'. Imagine. 'So, wow, it's so hard to be here now, thinking about the past – it's very emotional for me.' Cunha scored 15 Premier League goals for Wolves last season. He also helped Brazil qualify for the 2026 World Cup earlier this week, setting up the only goal in a decisive 1-0 win at home to Paraguay. His move to Manchester raised some eyebrows after United finished a woeful 15th in the Premier League under new co-owners Ineos and failed to qualify for any European football next season. But he said the club and its former stars had left a lasting impression. 'It's hard to talk about because I remember the whole squad at the time that I started to watch,' he said. 'In the front, (Wayne) Rooney, wow. Someone that I think I have a lot of particulars in my game, because I always give everything. 'I remember he was the No. 10 and everyone loved the skills of the player in his shirt, but he brings more. He goes to the grass (slide tackle) to take the ball, this kind of energy inside of him was a big example. '(Cristiano) Ronaldo, everyone knows, it is easy to talk about him. Ryan Giggs. Everyone. After conquering Europe, PSG now have sights set on Club World Cup glory

PHOTO: AFP LOS ANGELES – Freshly crowned kings of Europe, Paris Saint-Germain arrived this week in the United States for the Club World Cup and are treating Fifa's lucrative new competition not as a nuisance at the end of an exhausting season but as a serious objective. 'I think it is an incredible competition,' coach Luis Enrique said in the immediate aftermath of his team's Champions League triumph in Munich two weeks ago. 'Our aim is to be competitive and try to win a fifth trophy of the season.' The French giants could be forgiven for wanting some time to bask in the glory of their 5-0 victory over Inter Milan, which allowed them to finally win the Champions League for the first time in their history. There had been numerous failures in Europe's elite club competition, as well as billions of euros spent on transfer fees on stars like Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, prior to captain Marquinhos raising the trophy aloft. 'We have made history for the club, for the city and for the whole country,' defender Lucas Hernandez told sports daily L'Equipe after the PSG squad paraded their trophy down the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris, attended a reception with President Emmanuel Macron and celebrated with almost 50,000 fans at their Parc des Princes stadium. PSG have played 58 matches since last August and also swept all the available domestic trophies in France this season, as has become the norm in recent years. But there is simply no time to stop and reflect. Many of their players, including Champions League final hero Desire Doue, spent last week on international duty before returning to their club and departing for Los Angeles, where they will begin their Club World Cup adventure this weekend. 'The tournament itself is a really attractive prospect,' Enrique told 'We have to strike the balance between managing the physical and mental fatigue we're experiencing now at the end of a long season and harnessing the motivation that comes with being involved in the competition.' PSG's opening game will be against another European heavyweight as they take on Antoine Griezmann's Atletico Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, just outside Los Angeles, on June 15. They will then also face South American champions Botafogo, of Brazil, before moving north to take on Seattle Sounders in their remaining Group B matches. Expected to qualify for the knockout phase without too many issues, PSG could end up playing a total of seven matches if they make it all the way to the final in New York on July 13 – just a month before their scheduled first game of next season in the Uefa Supercup against Tottenham Hotspur. The strain of such a long campaign is telling, with Ousmane Dembele – their top scorer this season with 33 goals – struggling with an injury picked up playing for France last week. They did not manage to add any new players to their squad during the brief transfer window that opened at the start of this month ahead of the tournament. But the rewards for success in the Club World Cup are enticing and should be enough to keep Enrique's squad focused on their objective, with up to a stunning US$125 million (S$160 million) in prize money on offer for the best performing European team if they manage to go all the way.
