Police to summon suspect in worst-ever wildfires for questioning
Police will summon a man suspected of causing massive wildfires in South Korea's southeastern region, officials said Friday.
The suspect in his 50s is suspected of causing the fire at 11:24 a.m. on Saturday while performing an ancestral rite at a family grave on a hill in Uiseong County, North Gyeongsang Province.
The fire rapidly spread due to gusty winds amid dry conditions, devastating the region before being fully contained around 5 p.m. Friday.
At least 24 people were killed and 25 others injured in the province alone, with thousands evacuated, according to authorities.
Police completed a preliminary investigation involving his daughter recently, and are drawing up plans to question the man, according to officials.
The accidental starting of a wildfire can result in up to three years in prison or a fine of 30 million won (US$20,433) in South Korea.
Prosecutors have said the investigation needs to focus on whether he violated the Forest Protection Act, as well as the Criminal Act and the Cultural Heritage Protection Act.
They also called for joint investigations with the police and relevant authorities, as the wildfires affected a total of five cities and counties in the province, according to officials. (Yonhap)

ANSAN, South Korea, June 12 (Yonhap) -- The suspect in the killing of two brothers and stabbing of two others was indicted Thursday on charges of murder and attempted murder, the prosecution said. Cha began planning the murders six months beforehand by altering his weapon to make it comfortable for use and getting a prescription for sleeping pills to give to the brothers, according to the prosecution.

A Chinese woman has been apprehended for allegedly attempting to trespass into the home of BTS member Jungkook on the day of his discharge from military service, police said Thursday. Court again postpones Lee's election law violation retrial
The Seoul High Court said Monday it has again postponed President Lee Jae-myung's retrial on election law violation charges. The court said the first hearing scheduled for June 18 was postponed to an undetermined future date in accordance with Article 84 of the Constitution, which exempts a sitting president from criminal prosecution except in the case of insurrection or treason. Lee was elected president on June 3 after former President Yoon Suk Yeol was removed from office over his botched imposition of martial law in December. The Seoul High Court previously postponed the first hearing from May 15 citing the need to guarantee a "fair electioneering opportunity" to then presidential candidate Lee. The retrial comes after the Supreme Court remanded the case in May, overturning the Seoul High Court's decision to acquit Lee of a suspended prison term in connection with alleged false statements he made ahead of the previous presidential election in 2022.
