UK returns Indian Ocean territory to former colony

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer signed an agreement on Thursday transferring sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. However, the deal allows Washington and London to retain control of the joint military base on Diego Garcia Island for an initial period of 99 years.
The Chagos archipelago, comprising more than 60 islands in the Indian Ocean about 310 miles south of the Maldives archipelago, was separated from Mauritius by the UK in 1965, before Mauritius gained independence in 1968. Since then, Mauritius has sought to reclaim the territory. In 1966, the largest island, Diego Garcia, was leased to the US, and around 2,000 inhabitants were displaced.
Keir Starmer emphasized the strategic importance of Diego Garcia, stating, 'the strategic location of this base is of the utmost significance to Britain, from deploying aircraft to defeat terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan to anticipating threats in the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific.' He added that the deal secures strong protections against 'malign influence.'
Speaking from the UK's Northwood military headquarters, Starmer stated that US President Donald Trump also supports the deal, recognizing the strategic importance of the base.
Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam hailed the agreement as a historic step, saying, 'with this agreement, we are completing the total process of decolonization.'
However, critics of the accord, including Conservative Party foreign affairs spokeswoman Priti Patel, argued that it was costly and risked ceding strategic influence in the region to China. Patel called it 'Labour's Chagos Surrender Deal,' saying it is 'bad' for UK defense, for the country's taxpayers and for British Chagossians.
According to Reuters, the total value of the agreement would be worth $3.9 billion (3 billion pounds) over 99 years. The deal includes an existing 24-mile buffer zone around Diego Garcia, where no construction can occur without UK approval. There is also an option to extend the lease for an additional 40 years, provided that both parties reach an agreement.

NATO more powerful than Romans and Napoleon – bloc chief (VIDEO)

NATO is the 'most powerful alliance' in global history, Secretary General Mark Rutte has claimed, comparing the US-led bloc to the Roman Empire and Napoleon's army. Rutte urged member states to ramp up military spending to make NATO even 'more lethal' and better prepared to counter the alleged threat from Russia, which Moscow has long denied and ridiculed. 'NATO is the most powerful defense alliance in world history. It's even more powerful than the Roman Empire, and more powerful than Napoleon's empire,' Rutte stated at a press conference ahead of the NATO Defense Ministers meeting in Brussels on Wednesday. 'But the defense alliance needs maintenance and needs investment.' He laid out priorities to strengthen NATO's military, insisting they are essential to deter potential future aggression. 'We must make NATO a stronger, fairer and more lethal alliance… We need more resources, forces, and capabilities so that we are prepared to face any threat,' he added. Rutte claimed that Russia could attack NATO within several years and said the bloc would not be prepared to defend itself unless it moves beyond its long-held 2% of GDP defense spending benchmark. NATO Chief Mark Rutte says the NATO 'defensive alliance' is more powerful than both the Roman Empire and Napoleon's Empire.1. NATO is essentially the US, and a collection of vassal states that submit to Washington's hegemony 2. The Chief of NATO compares the organisation he… Rutte said he would present member states with a new 'defense investment plan' at the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague. Russia has repeatedly rejected claims that it poses a threat to NATO, calling them 'nonsense' and accusing the West of stoking fear to justify more military spending. Moscow has also warned that the West's rearmament efforts risk escalating into a broader conflict in Europe. Russian officials have also drawn their own historical comparisons. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the West of trying to inflict a 'strategic defeat' on Russia 'just like in the times of Napoleon and Hitler' through its proxy war in Ukraine. He said the only way to avoid a wider conflict is for the West to abandon its militaristic path. Rutte's imperial comparisons have sparked criticism on social media. Media analyst Michael William Lebron, known as Lionel, wrote: 'NATO's chief boasting they're 'more powerful than the Roman or Napoleonic Empires' sounds less like diplomacy and more like 1939 Berlin. This isn't defense – it's imperial arrogance... Dangerous rhetoric.' John Laughland, a historian and specialist in international affairs, pointed out on X that 'The Roman and Napoleonic empires were not alliances, they were states. Or is NATO now an empire?' 'NATO 'Chief' sounds like Uncle Adolf back in 1939,' Irish journalist Chay Bowes added. British journalist Afshin Rattansi also weighed in, saying it's no wonder non-NATO states view the bloc as 'a hyper-militarist threat' after it 'destroyed Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and so many others.' Rattansi called Rutte 'a puppet' of Washington and warned that NATO 'is a dangerous, hyper-militarist organization that is far from defensive.'

Whites to become minority in UK in 40 years

White Britons will become a minority in their own country in less than four decades, a recent study has suggested. The UK has seen a massive influx of legal and illegal migration under successive Conservative and Labour governments, with a record high of 906,000 new arrivals in 2023, according to The Telegraph. In 2022, the census revealed that London and Birmingham had become minority white cities. In an article on Tuesday, the newspaper cited an analysis by professor Matt Goodwin of Buckingham University, showing that the share of white Britons in the total population of the UK will slide from the current 73% to 57% by 2050. The study predicts they will slip into minority by 2063, and by the end of the century, the white population in the country may shrink to around 33%. The analysis goes on to project that six in ten people in the UK will be foreign-born or have at least one immigrant parent by the end of the century. The share of Muslims in the UK population is expected to rise from the current 7% to 19.2% within the same period. Goodwin told The Telegraph that his study factors in migration, as well as birth and death rates among various ethnic and religious groups, based on Office for National Statistics and census data. The author of the study told the newspaper that his findings raise 'enormous questions about the capacity of our country and leaders to unify people around a shared sense of identity, values, ways of life, and culture.' He also noted that the concerns that his study is liable to spark among many Britons 'will need to be recognised, respected and addressed if the UK is to avoid considerable political turbulence and polarisation in the years and decades ahead.'
