Stringer the super sub as Giants come back to beat Suns
GWS have held on for a seven-point win in a captivating shootout with Gold Coast to reassert their status as genuine finals contenders.
Jake Stringer, the substitute on return from a hamstring injury, kicked the match-winning goal at Engie Stadium to set up the 16.10 (106) to 14.15 (99) win on Sunday.
The Suns had looked set to cruise to an easy victory after slamming through the opening four goals, but the Giants stayed true to their 'never surrender' attitude.

With 22 points the deficit at the final change, Adam Kingsley's men opened the fourth quarter with four-straight goals.
It was 50-gamer Aaron Cadman's third major of the afternoon that launched the Giants ahead for the first time, earning a two-point lead.
But a maturing Suns outfit remained determined, and Brayden Fiorini responded to restore the visitors' lead.
Substitute Stringer, in his first game since round nine, then proved his quality to restore the lead for the Giants with a dribbling ball from the right pocket.
He later helped seal the deal with another from the opposite pocket in the 28th minute of the quarter.
The Giants hold onto their top-eight spot (9-6) with their fifth-straight win over the Suns, their 15th overall since the two expansion clubs' inaugural 2012 season.
Gold Coast, who have yet to make a finals series, have dropped out to ninth (8-5) through three consecutive loss.
Suns captain Noah Anderson orchestrated their early dominance, and finished with a game-high 15 score involvements from 42 disposals and seven clearances.
He was well supported by Touk Miller (37 disposals, seven clearances, two goals) and Matt Rowell (34, four).
Tom Green led the way for the Giants with 30 disposals and 16 clearances, while Lachie Ash had 33 touches.
Ash was without his defensive partner Lachie Whitfield, who suffered a concussion in the first quarter.
Attempting to salvage a mismeasured kick by teammate Toby Bedford, Whitfield was involved in a side-on collision with Suns forward Ben King.
Whitfield was then replaced by Stringer in the second quarter.
GWS were already without Whitfield's fellow All-Australian backman Sam Taylor (foot).
The Suns took advantage of Taylor and Whitfield's absence, slamming through four-straight goals in 16 minutes before the Giants managed their first score - two Jake Riccardi goals - in the opening quarter.
Jesse Hogan reduced the deficit for the Giants after Suns defender Mac Andrew mistook a 'play on call' by a teammate and moved off his mark, giving away a 50-metre penalty.
Gold Coast took 23 inside-50 entries to 10 to finish with their highest-scoring first quarter of the season, leading 7.6 (48) to 4.1 (25).
The Giants lifted in the second term but could only kick two goals to one to reduce the deficit to 13 points.
GWS finally came alive when Cadman slotted his second of the afternoon to open the final quarter.

Supercars Darwin: Feeney completes clean sweep
Broc Feeney completed a clean sweep of all three Supercars races at Hidden Valley, taking another convincing win at the Darwin circuit. Feeney started from pole position, again, and was headed only briefly over the 70-lap distance to take his third win of the weekend and sixth at the track for and his Triple Eight Chevrolet. Advertisement From pole he dominated the early going, building a small gap before he dropped the hammer on lap 10, building a 3s lead in four laps. But Grove Racing's Matt Payne made his first compulsory pitstop on lap 14, undercutting Feeney and seizing the lead when the Camaro driver emerged from the pitlane on lap 30. But Feeney, on much fresher tyres, duly reclaimed the lead two laps later. In the second half of the race the two drivers stuck to their strategies. Feeney's second stop came with just eight laps to go and he resumed 2.4s in the lead, stretching that to six seconds at the flag, the first driver to sweep the Darwin races since Scott McLaughlin did it six years ago. 'The triple crown has always been a thing for me,' said a happy Feeney. 'I watched Scotty win it back in 2019 and I am so proud of this team. It is hard to put together a weekend like that. I tried to look after the tyres and I got three cracker starts, and I could put my foot down when it was needed.' Roosters show their might by flogging Cowboys
The Sydney Roosters have reaffirmed their status as genuine NRL final threats, putting on a 42-8 flogging of North Queensland at Allianz Stadium. In one of their most dominant performances of the season, the Roosters ran in five second-half tries on the hapless Cowboys to go seventh on the ladder. It was only three-and-a-half months ago that the Roosters conceded 50 points to Brisbane in round one, then dropped four of their first five games. But this is suddenly a very different Roosters outfit. Sunday's win was their biggest of 2025, and the second half was close to their most impressive. The only concerns were injuries to second-rower Siua Wong and five-eighth Sandon Smith, both picking up knee issues. But this is a Roosters squad whose depth seemingly has no end. Salesi Foketi was great filling in for Victor Radley at lock on Sunday, sending Lindsay Collins over for the first try with a perfect short ball. The No.13 had a role in another during the Roosters' second-half run, with he and Angus Crichton throwing offloads before Sandon Smith kicked for Tedesco to score. The Roosters No.1 scored his try, made a bust before Billy Smith's first, then helped the Tri-colours on the attack for the centre's second. But his most crucial play was a late one-on-one strip on John Bateman just before halftime, with the Cowboys on the attack and fighting to make it 18-10. In contrast, the past month has been a nightmare for the Cowboys, after they were beaten 58-4 by the Dolphins last week. Todd Payten's men are now 12th on the ladder, with just one win since they demolished Gold Coast at Magic Round. They have spent large chunks of time since then without Jason Taumalolo, and also missed State of Origin forwards Reuben Cotter and Reece Robson on Sunday. But things must turn around dramatically if they are to go anywhere near replicating last season's fifth-placed finish.
