Bavarian Nordic Announces Acceptance of Marketing Authorization Application for Chikungunya Vaccine in the UK for Persons Aged 12 and Older

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, March 7, 2025 – Bavarian Nordic A/S (OMX: BAVA) announced today that the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has validated the marketing authorization application and accepted to start the review of the Company's single-dose chikungunya vaccine, CHIKV VLP vaccine, for active immunization for the prevention of disease caused by chikungunya virus in individuals 12 years and older.
The application was submitted to MHRA in February 2025 under the international recognition procedure based on the positive opinion adopted by the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use of the European Medicines Agency in January 2025. CHIKV VLP vaccine was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Commission in February 2025 under the trade name VIMKUNYA®, and could potentially obtain approval in the UK later in the first half of 2025.
Bavarian Nordic recently expanded its global commercial presence to include a dedicated UK-based organization to manage its travel health portfolio, also comprising vaccines for rabies, typhoid and cholera. The Company is also a supplier of mpox vaccines to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

About chikungunyaChikungunya is a mosquito-borne disease caused by the chikungunya virus (CHIKV). In the past 20 years, the virus has emerged across several regions in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, including many popular travel destinations, often causing large unpredictable outbreaks. Since its discovery, CHIKV has been identified in more than 110 countries, with evidence of transmission confirmed in more than 50 countries over the past five years1. Chikungunya typically presents with acute symptoms, including fever, rash, fatigue, headache, and often severe and incapacitating joint pain. Most patients recover, but 30-40% of those affected may develop chronic symptoms that can last for months or even years2. In 2024, 620,000 cases of chikungunya and over 200 deaths were reported worldwide3. Recent data suggest that chikungunya is severely underreported and often misdiagnosed as dengue fever due to a similar symptom profile4.
About CHIKV VLP vaccineCHIKV VLP vaccine is an adjuvanted VLP recombinant protein vaccine for active immunization for the prevention of disease caused by chikungunya virus (CHIKV) in individuals 12 years and older.
Because VLPs contain no virus genetic material, the vaccine cannot infect cells, reproduce or cause disease.
While the mechanism of action of CHIKV VLP vaccine still needs to be further characterized, it is thought that the vaccine can induce protection from CHIKV infection by inducing neutralizing antibodies against certain CHIKV proteins resulting in neutralization of live virus. An adjuvant is added to increase the magnitude of vaccine-mediated immune responses.
The US and EU approvals of VIMKUNYA (CHIKV VLP vaccine) were based on results from two phase 3 clinical trials which enrolled more than 3,500 healthy individuals 12 years of age and older. The studies met their primary endpoints, with results showing that 21 days after vaccination, the vaccine induced neutralizing antibodies in up to 97.8% of the vaccinated individuals and demonstrated a rapid immune response starting to develop within one week. The vaccine was well-tolerated and vaccine-related adverse events were mainly mild or moderate in nature.

Martin Ralph, 61, was given a new pair of orthotic footwear for his July 27, 2019 wedding — footwear he immediately said was too tight, according to The New York Post. Ralph, who hails from the English town of Chesham, said he had his measurements for the specially ordered shoes taken at a local hospital, but said, 'they were measured too small.' Ralph, who normally wears orthotic boots, says he wanted to wear shoes for his wedding. 'I told them at the time of the fitting that they were too small. Three times I went back but I was told by the lady who did the measurements I just had to wear them in.' But wearing the shoes on his wedding day caused significant pain, he says: 'Halfway through the wedding day one foot was getting particularly sore. I had to change into my boots.' Wearing the shoes also caused lasting damage, he says. 'When I took my sock off, my toe was three times the size it should have been,' he says, sharing that he eventually noticed that the shoes gave him a blister, which gradually got worse.' Ralph struggles with diabetes, which can cause circulation problems, the National Institutes of Health explains. 'Not having enough blood flowing to your legs and feet can make it hard for a sore or an infection to heal.' The blister didn't heal, and Ralph developed a severe infection that didn't respond to antibiotics; When when doctors cleaned out the dead tissue, they had to amputate as 'it was too far gone … you could see the bone.' 'It was like a butcher had been there, I was in shock,' he said. 'Having to undergo amputation of my toe was horrific, but I was hopeful that was the end of it. Sadly not.' Ralph has since lost more toes, explaining that now he's unable to walk unaided, and for the first time since he was 17, he's unable to work. New health centre near Birmingham as historic swimming baths transformed

An iconic swimming baths is set to make a splash as a revamped health centre. The Grade II listed Smethwick Baths, which shut its doors two years ago, has been snapped up by a local healthcare firm, aiming to breathe new life into the historic edifice. Sandwell Council offloaded the building to Norvic Family Practice this April, following through on a decision made last year by the Labour-led cabinet. Read more: Crimes that happen where you live The Smethwick-based GPs, who already manage Victoria Health Centre on Suffrage Street and Norman Road Surgery in the town, believe the move will enable them to ramp up their appointment offerings. Dr Amandeep Suthi of Norvic Family Practice shared: "We are excited to announce these proposals for the historic Thimblemill Baths building, which we know is much-loved by the local community. "We are working with architects to design a sympathetic conversion of this grade II listed building to restore it for public use, and we will provide more details as soon as we can. "We have run out of clinical rooms at our current site in Norman Road so we can't offer any more appointments than we already do. By moving to new premises, we will be able to offer more appointments in the future." However, the transformation of the building into a state-of-the-art health centre is still pending planning approval from the council. The art deco baths, which had been a community staple for over nine decades until its closure in July last year, have suffered extensive vandalism since, with smashed doors, toilets, and windows, costing taxpayers an additional £7,500 per month for increased security measures. Sandwell Council has stated that the responsibility for maintaining the security of the former baths now lies with the new owner. The Thimblemill Road baths were closed following the public unveiling of the multi-million-pound Sandwell Aquatics Centre, located just a mile away on Londonderry Lane. Despite initially agreeing to collaborate with music charity, the People's Orchestra, on plans to transform the grade II listed building into a new music venue and community hub, the council later expressed reluctance due to concerns over potential risks and high costs. The council currently holds more than 130 'assets' in its property portfolio, valued at approximately £11m, which are deemed surplus to requirements. It is now planning to sell these off in order to achieve a 'savings target' of over £4m within the next two years. Earlier this year, Cllr Peter Hughes, the council's cabinet member for regeneration and infrastructure, confessed that 'no planning' had been undertaken regarding the future of the baths, despite having agreed to its closure seven years prior. The council also disclosed its intention to sell the building as part of an effort to save £840,000. In 2018, Sandwell Council's cabinet officially decided that Smethwick Baths would close after the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, with the newly constructed Sandwell Aquatics Centre set to open to the public in 2023. Sandwell Council revealed it had amassed over 130 'assets' worth roughly £11m that exceeded its needs, and now the Black Country authority is planning to offload these properties in order to meet a 'savings target' of above £4m within two years. Cllr Hughes commented: "The council has worked hard to secure a positive future for this landmark building in Smethwick. "I am delighted the sale is now complete – and I look forward to seeing the detailed design proposals for a conversion that promises to both preserve the building and benefit people's health and wellbeing for many years to come."

Genmab Announces Epcoritamab Investigational Combination Therapy Demonstrates High Response Rates in Patients with Relapsed or Refractory (R/R) Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) Eligible for Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation (ASCT)

COPENHAGEN, Denmark--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Genmab A/S (Nasdaq: GMAB) today announced new results from the Phase 1b/2 EPCORE ® NHL-2 trial Arm 10 (NCT04663347), evaluating epcoritamab, a T-cell engaging bispecific antibody administered subcutaneously, in combination with rituximab, ifosfamide, carboplatin, and etoposide (R-ICE) in adult patients with relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (R/R DLBCL) who are eligible for autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT). Results demonstrated an overall response rate (ORR) of 87 percent, a complete response (CR) rate of 65 percent and a partial response (PR) of 23 percent. The majority of patients (65 percent) proceeded to ASCT. At six months, an estimated 81 percent of responses were ongoing, 74 percent of patients were progression free, and 100 percent of patients were alive. These results were shared today during an oral presentation at the 30 th European Hematology Association (EHA) 2025 Congress. The safety profile of this combination therapy showed cytokine release syndrome (CRS) being low grade and no discontinuations due to treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs). The most common TEAEs were neutropenia (74 percent), anemia (68 percent), and thrombocytopenia (68 percent). CRS occurred in 52 percent; all were low grade (1/2) and resolved. One patient had immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS; grade 1), which resolved. No clinical tumor lysis syndrome was observed. Infections occurred in 18 patients (58 percent); five (16 percent) had serious infections. There were no Grade 5 TEAEs. 'These results are particularly encouraging because many of the patients in this study had high-risk disease, having progressed rapidly after initial treatment,' said Raul Cordoba, MD, PhD, Head of the Lymphoma Unit at the Fundacion Jimenez Diaz University Hospital, Madrid, Spain. 'This combination therapy of epcoritamab plus rituximab, ifosfamide, carboplatin, and etoposide (R-ICE) offers a potential new treatment option for patients with relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, providing high response rates and a bridge to potentially curative autologous stem cell transplantation." Among patients in the study who progressed within 12 months after first-line treatment (n=20), epcoritamab in combination with R-ICE demonstrated an 85 percent ORR and 55 percent CR. Patients in the study who progressed after 12 months from first-line therapy experienced a 91 percent ORR and 82 percent CR. Additionally, patients with one prior line of therapy experienced an 88 percent ORR and 68 percent CR, and patients who were treated with more than one prior line of therapy experienced an 83 percent ORR and 50 percent CR. 'The results from this trial highlight the potential of this investigational epcoritamab containing regimen, especially in patients who progress quickly after initial treatment, and reinforce our joint efforts with AbbVie to develop epcoritamab as a core therapy for B-cell lymphomas, especially as we develop epcoritamab in earlier lines of therapy and a broader patient population,' said Dr. Judith Klimovsky, Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer of Genmab. Use of epcoritamab + R-ICE in patients with R/R DLBCL eligible for ASCT is not approved and the safety and efficacy of epcoritamab for use as a combination therapy in DLBCL have not been established. About Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma DLBCL is the most common type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) worldwide, accounting for approximately 25-30 percent of all NHL cases. In the U.S., there are approximately 25,000 new cases of DLBCL diagnosed each year. DLBCL can arise in lymph nodes as well as in organs outside of the lymphatic system, occurs more commonly in the elderly and is slightly more prevalent in men. DLBCL is a fast-growing type of NHL, a cancer that develops in the lymphatic system and affects B-cell lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. For many people living with DLBCL, their cancer either relapses, which means it may return after treatment, or becomes refractory, meaning it does not respond to treatment. Although new therapies have become available, treatment management can remain a challenge. About the EPCORE ® NHL-2 Trial EPCORE NHL-2 is a Phase 1b/2 open-label interventional trial to evaluate the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics/biomarkers, immunogenicity, and preliminary efficacy of epcoritamab as a monotherapy and in combination with other standard of care agents in patients with B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (B-NHL). The trial consists of two parts: Part 1 (Dose Escalation) and Part 2 (Dose Expansion). The primary objective of Part 1 is safety, and the primary goal of Part 2 is preliminary efficacy. The primary endpoint was overall response rate (ORR) based on best overall response per Lugano criteria. MRD negativity was assessed as a secondary endpoint. Arm 10 of the EPCORE NHL-2 study enrolled 31 patients with R/R DLBCL, who were eligible for R-ICE and ASCT, and had received ≥1 prior line of treatment. At the time of data cutoff (December 18, 2024), median follow-up was 11 months (range, 6−15). Among the 31 patients treated with epcoritamab 48 mg + R-ICE, 61 percent were Ann Arbor stage III/IV, 42 percent had bulky disease ≥7 cm, 81 percent had one prior LOT (range, 1−3), and 65 percent had progressed within 12 months of first-line treatment.
