Welcome to our live coverage of South Korea's presidential election on Tuesday.
The election caps six months of turmoil triggered by a shock martial law briefly imposed by former leader Yoon Suk Yeol in December.
The new leader will face the challenge of rallying a society deeply scarred by the attempt at military rule and an export-heavy economy reeling from unpredictable protectionist moves by the United States, a major trading partner and a security ally.
Turnout is expected to be high. As of 3 p.m. (0600 GMT), 30.5 million people, or nearly 69% of the electorate, had voted at 14,295 locations, according to the National Election Commission.
Both liberal frontrunner Lee Jae-myung and his conservative rival Kim Moon-soo have pledged change for the country. They say a political system and economic model set up during its rise as a budding democracy and industrial power are no longer fit for purpose
But overshadowing any economic or social policy initiatives is Yoon's botched attempt to impose martial law that has loomed large over the poll.
Lee is favoured to win, according to polls released a week before the vote, leading Kim by 14 percentage points with 49% public support in a Gallup Korea survey.
Exit polls conducted by three television networks will be released at the close of the polls at 8 p.m.

Vietnam sends document responding to US trade requests

HANOI, June 5 (Reuters) - Vietnam has submitted a document responding to U.S. trade requests and expressed its "determination and goodwill" in finding a common voice on the issue, its Ministry of Industry and Trade said in a statement on Thursday. The ministry did not disclose what it had proposed to Washington. Vietnam has been slapped with 46% "reciprocal" tariffs by the Trump administration. Though they have been paused until July, if they come into effect they could seriously undermine a growth model that relies on exports to the U.S., its top market. The statement came as Vietnamese trade minister Nguyen Hong Dien and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met in Paris to prepare for the third round of negotiations for a trade agreement between the two countries, scheduled to take place before the end of next week, the ministry said. The Trump administration wanted countries to provide their best offers on trade negotiations by Wednesday as officials sought to accelerate talks with multiple partners ahead of a self-imposed deadline in just five weeks, according to a draft letter to negotiating partners seen by Reuters. "The two ministers agreed to speed up the negotiation process, focusing maximum efforts to achieve the best results in the third round of negotiations," the Vietnam trade ministry statement said.

Oil slips on US stockpile build, Saudi Arabia price cuts

TOKYO, June 5 (Reuters) - Oil prices slipped in early trade on Thursday after a build in U.S. gasoline and diesel inventories and Saudi Arabia's cut to its July prices for Asian crude buyers. Brent crude futures fell 21 cents, or 0.3%, to $64.65 a barrel at 0047 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude lost 29 cents, or 0.5%, dropping to $62.58. Oil prices closed around 1% lower on Wednesday after official data showed that U.S. gasoline and distillate stockpiles grew more than expected, reflecting weaker demand in the world's top economy. Adding to the weakness, Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter, cut its July prices for Asian crude buyers to nearly the lowest in four years. The price cut by Saudi Arabia, key oil producer within OPEC+ - the oil producing group that includes members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies such as Russia - follows the OPEC+ move over the weekend to increase output by 411,000 barrels per day for July. The strategy of OPEC+ group leaders Saudi Arabia and Russia is partly to punish over-producers and to wrestle back market share, Reuters has reported. Meanwhile, Canada prepared possible reprisals and the European Union reported progress in trade talks as new U.S. metals tariffs triggered more disruption in the global economy and added urgency to negotiations with Washington. "Uncertainty fuelled by President Trump's shifting stance on tariffs has intensified fears of a global economic slowdown," analyst Ole Hansen at Saxo Bank said in a note.
