Severe weather expected Friday – here's what to expect

Yahoo15-05-2025

Tonight features the risk for a couple of isolated storms. Most of the region will remain quiet but any storm that can develop will have the potential of producing small hail and strong wind gusts. This threat will be highest over the WV mountains. It's a muggy night on tap with an added influx of heat and humidity behind a warm front passing through from south to north, with low temperatures only dipping into the low to mid 60s.
Friday provides a good chance for thunderstorms – some of which are expected to be strong to severe – with plenty of heat and moisture for storms to utilize and an approaching cold front from the west.
Our region will be in the classic 'unstable' section of a robust low pressure system over the Great Lakes, with a warm front to our northeast and a cold front to our west.
A few morning showers with rumbles will be followed by a quiet period, with several hours of dry time. This will enable the atmosphere to 'recover' and become unstable again. Then, we will watch Friday afternoon into the evening closely where storms will be likely, likely in the form of a line of strong to severe thunderstorms during the evening hours.
Though damaging wind gusts are the primary threat, an isolated tornado along with hail and locally heavy rainfall are all on the table. High temperatures will be in the upper 70s. Showers and thunderstorms will continue into the overnight hours.
Saturday's cold front is trending quicker, passing through during the mid-morning hours. As a result, after a few showers during that timeframe, we should dry out nicely for the afternoon. Due to the front crossing earlier in the day, severe weather is not expected. Temperatures will be in the mid 70s in what promises to be a nice second half to the day.
Sunday will be a nice day! Plenty of sunshine with high pressure nosing in means plenty of blue skies for a wonderful second half of the weekend. Don't forget to lather up with the sunscreen, as we will see high temperatures in the mid 70s.
Monday will be a beautiful day with plenty of sunshine with high pressure in control. With the high pressure up to our north, we will see drier air filter in with high pressure in the mid 70s.

Tuesday sees our next storm system scooting into the region, which begins another unsettled period of weather for our region. A warm front will lift north with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected. That front will then stall midweek, which will provide the risk for heavy rainfall. High temperatures Tuesday will be in the low to mid 70s.
Wednesday is unsettled once again, with scattered showers a low pressure system riding along the aforementioned stalled boundary. Clouds and numerous scattered showers and rumbles are expected, with high temperatures around 70 degrees.
StormTracker 59 Travel Forecast
Thursday provides plenty of sunshine but it will be a cooler day with a northerly breeze behind Wednesday's front with highs in the mid 60s.
Looking ahead in your extended forecast, we will cool down for a couple of days before warming back up. Friday features high temperatures in the 60s with plenty of sunshine. We will warm up into the 70s on Saturday with mostly sunny skies before late day rain chances return on Sunday with highs in the mid 70s. At this point, most of the Memorial Day weekend looks to be in good shape, but Memorial Day itself could have a few showers.

Tracking scattered rain chances Sunday evening

We had a very wet start to our Saturday, with the St. Joseph airport recording 1.14 inches of rain. The rain cleared quickly, leaving behind sunny skies. Conditions this evening are expected to remain dry and seasonable, with temperatures climbing into the mid 70s before sunset. Overnight, skies will stay clear and dry as temperatures drop into the low 60s. Looking ahead to Sunday, we'll start the day dry. However, there is a chance of rain and thunderstorms by late afternoon and evening. The Storm Prediction Center's latest outlook shows a tight gradient south of Highway 36, with Level 1 and Level 2 severe weather risks in that area. The primary threats include large hail and damaging winds, especially near Kansas City and east of Interstate 35. While storms are expected to strengthen as they move south, the risk for the St. Joseph area remains low, but not zero. Rainfall is not expected to be as intense as Saturday's. After Sunday's rain chances, conditions will dry out, and temperatures will climb midweek into the mid to upper 80s, potentially reaching near 90 degrees by Wednesday. Our next weather system is expected to affect the region Thursday into Friday. Stay up to date with the Storm Tracker Weather Team for the latest forecasts and alerts.
