
Britain's beauty spots have declared war on coach tours
The National Trust has banned coaches from parking or dropping off passengers at Birling Gap, a popular beach in East Sussex, amid fears of rising visitor numbers and coastal erosion.
The news caught my eye not just because this is 12 miles away from my front door, but because it represents the latest move in a nationwide war against coach tours. A war which isn't as straightforward as it might seem.
Last year, the picturesque village of Bourton-on-the-Water banned coaches (nicknamed the 'cruise ship of the Cotswolds') after record crowds descended on its cobbled streets. In a new trial, coaches will be forced to park a 10-minute walk away from the village centre. Nearby Bibury is pondering a similar coach ban after more than 50 per day arrived during peak periods.
The argument at both Birling Gap and the Cotswold villages is that they are simply not equipped for dozens of galumphing coaches descending every day, nor for the thousands of tourists who they airdrop into the thick of things during peak months. Clearly, something needs to change. But is banning coaches the answer?
'Time and again it feels like the coach industry has been victimised or discriminated against,' argues Robert Shaw, director of Harry Shaw and Chairman of the Coach Tourism Association.
One of Shaw's concerns is that banning coaches will negatively impact passengers with mobility requirements.
'A lot of coach passengers do have mobility issues, that's why they're using coaches, because they know there's guaranteed assistance. They're being chauffeured, effectively, so this will affect their ability to go and see places of national interest,' says Shaw. Some coach firms say they have now dropped Bourton from their itineraries entirely, for this very reason.
I am sure some locals will be celebrating the ban on coaches. But are they accidentally shouldering out the wrong tourists? It strikes me that one of the biggest challenges, whether in a chocolate-box village or on the Seven Sisters cliffs, is that people have forgotten how to behave. There is a new type of tourist who is very concerned with getting a perfect photograph or video to post on social media, rather than spending money on some local handicrafts or fudge.
In the case of Bourton, locals regularly complain of tourists gazing through residential windows. At Seven Sisters, it is people standing perilously close to the crumbling cliff-edges.
Have a quick browse online and you will find dozens of independent, London-based operators which offer 'day tours' to Birling Gap or the Cotswolds. Some of these use full-sized coaches, but many use small minibuses. I fear there is a scenario where these coach bans will restrict access for high-spending, culturally intrigued passengers, while continuing to welcome TikTokers who are fixated only on creating 'content'.
As to where the coaches will go instead? I saw one coach operator changing its itinerary to include Stow-on-the-Wold instead of Bourton.
'Coach operators will provide alternative destinations,' muses Shaw. 'But it's nice not to be forced to do so, it's nice to do it by choice. And how long until they're complaining about overtourism as well, if everyone moves to the same places?'
The problem with coaches is that they are big. They are cumbersome. Like cruise ships, they are amongst the most visually straightforward ways for news outlets to depict overtourism (even if the scale – 5,000 passengers versus 50 – is slightly different). But the truth is that coaches produce far lower emissions per passenger than cars. And, as a bonus, drivers or tour leaders can educate passengers en route on the local sore points and behavioural issues they should avoid when they arrive.
The war on coaches will reduce visitor numbers, and will remove a fleet of very large vehicles from often rural locations. Maybe that, in itself, is all that needs to be said on the matter. But I refuse to believe that banning coaches is a cure-all for the myriad overtourism concerns at the UK's beauty spots. And – whisper it – the coach passengers might just be missed by the businesses who depend on them.

Detroit-bound plane returns to Heathrow due to windscreen crack
A passenger plane from Heathrow to Detroit had to return to the London airport due to a cracked Air Lines flight 017 was carrying 188 passengers and 12 crew on board when the pilot reported the fault shortly after taking off at 11:44 BST on Saturday crew followed procedure by returning to London Heathrow, where the plane landed safely a short time later, the airline customers were re-booked onto flights later today and those who could not be offered flights until tomorrow were offered meals and hotel rooms, Delta Air Lines said. The aircraft, an Airbus A330-200, is being assessed and maintenance is being carried out, according to the airline. No other flights were disrupted as a result of the incident, Heathrow Airport said.

The red jets are taking part of the RAF Cosford Air Show in Shropshire on Sunday and will fly over parts of the Midlands and northwest England. Brilliant airborne tricks, daredevil flying and symbolic display has made the Lincolnshire-based squadron a favourite for Brits over the years and mean many of those attending the air show will be hotly anticipating their arrival. But they will also be visible from a number of places in the area close by tomorrow. Today, the crack flying team departed from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, Scotland, to Liverpool's John Lennon Airport. The Red Arrows' route will begin at 2:59pm tomorrow. After flying over Ellesmere Port, the squadron is expected to be northeast of Chester just two minutes later. Then, the team will barrel through British skies travelling south to an area around Cholmondeley, before turning northeast towards Natwich and then south past Blackbrook, Walford, Harper Adams University and Lilleshall before reaching RAF Cosford. The team will then head east to their home in Lincolnshire following the display. The Red Arrows are expected to be northeast of Brewood at 3:34pm and will pass near Uttoxeter and Sutton-on-Trent on their way to Waddington at 3:45pm. The times could change due to the weather or other factors, according to the website whic shared the expected route and timings. This year's air show at Cosford, meanwhile, will feature an array of legendary aircraft like the American P51 Mustang, royal Air Force Chinook helicopter and F-35B Lightning fighter jet. The arrival of The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, will see the iconic Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane planes and the C-47 Dakota. Organisers of the event said the theme of the show this year is 'Commemorate, Celebrate, Innovate'. It said: 'The air show will commemorate some of our history both in terms of assets and through displays in the Victory Village; Celebrate the work of the Royal Air Force, NATO Allies and Partner nations; And seek to inspire the next generation by showcasing how the armed forces innovate together and with our Defence sector partners in the STEM Hangar.' Holiday ATM warning that could leave holidaymakers without cash this summer
HOLIDAYMAKERS might end up without cash this summer if they are not aware of this banking feature. Many travellers choose to withdraw cash at the ATM when they are abroad. 1 However many could be unaware that there is a limit to how much you can take out every day The amount can vary so it is worth checking with your provider ahead of your travels to avoid being caught short. Below we share how much money each high street bank lets you withdraw each day. BARCLAYS The bank of over 20 million Brits lets customers withdraw up to £300 per day when abroad. This rises to £1000 for those with a premier account. Barclays said customers have amended their cash limits in their Barclays app then these will apply when abroad as well. That means if you set your withdrawal limit to £200, you will only be able to take this much out when you are abroad. You will also be charged a 2.99% fee for withdrawing cash abroad with your Barclays debit card. That means you would be charged an extra £2.99 for withdrawing £100 abroad. The fee will also apply if you pay using your debit card. Lloyds Lloyds said customers can withdraw up to £800 per day when abroad. However, it warned the amount you can take out may vary depending on which ATM you choose to withdraw cash from. Lloyds customers are also charged a 2.99% fee for using their card abroad. But Club Lloyds members have recently had this fee waived as part of changes to the scheme. It now costs £5 per month to have a Club Lloyds account after the price was hiked from £3. Halifax Halifax is a subsidiary of Lloyds and also has a £800 maximum withdrawal fee. Customers are also charged a 2.99% fee for using their card abroad. But from August 1, Halifax Rewards customers will have this charge removed. It comes as part of a refresh of the banking offer, which will see new features added and some taken away. SANTANDER The high street bank said the highest amount that customers can withdraw abroad is £300. The same rate applies to customers withdrawing cash in the UK. This applies to Santander customers using the Edge, Edge Up and Everyday current account. However customers with a Private Current Account, which has a £5 monthly fee, the daily withdrawal limit can be up to £1,500. Santander warned this may vary depending on the ATM. NATWEST NatWest has over 19 million users across the UK, making it another popular bank for customers. How much you can withdraw from an ATM when abroad depends on what type of account you have. For example, customers with a student, graduate savings and teen accounts have their limit set at £250 per day. This increases to £300 for those with premium accounts such as NatWest Silver of Platinum, which offers rewards and travel insurance. The bank also charges customers a 2.75% fee to use their debit card abroad. NATIONWIDE The bank, which has 17 million customers, said current account holders can withdraw up to £500 per day at an ATM abroad. However, the bank warned overseas banks may put higher limits on transactions. For safety purposes and customers may find they are only able to withdraw a sterling equivalent of £135 to £150 per transaction. If customers are affected by this, they can make further withdrawals on the same day up to the accounts withdrawal limit. Customers may be charged for their transactions. Nationwide customers are charged a 2.75% fee to use their debit card abroad. BEWARE OF THIS SIMPLE MISTAKE If you are travelling abroad this summer you should also be aware of this easy ATM mistake that could cost you. Cash machines will usually give you the option to pay in the local currency or in pounds. It may seem like the obvious option to pay in pounds, as it's more familiar and the currency linked to your card. However, by choosing this option you could end up paying more for the cash coming out of the ATM or for the goods you're paying for at the till. That is because the overseas bank will do the conversion to pounds and the rates are unfavourable. However, if you choose to pay in the local currency your card will instead do the conversion which is usually much more favourable. So if you are keen to save cash when abroad, you should opt to pay in the local currency and not pounds. Are there other options to for spending abroad? There are several specialist cards that can give you a great exchange rate. These cards include travel credit cards and pre-paid cards which can let you pay abroad without fees or at a set exchange rate. Senior Consumer Reporter Olivia Marshall explains all the options. Travel credit cards: Travel credit cards allow you to spend money abroad without being hit by any fees or hidden charges. But, they may still charge you for taking cash out. We recommend the Halifax's Clarity Card as it won't charge you for using it abroad, nor are there any fees for withdrawing cash. But you will be charged interest if you don't repay your balance in full at a rate of 19.9 per cent. And you will be charged interest on cash withdrawals until your balance is paid off too, at a rate of between 19.9 and 27.95 per cent depending on your credit score. In other words, just because you are using plastic abroad doesn't mean you don't have to pay these credit cards off like you normally would. Always pay off your balance before the end of the month with these cards to make sure that any money you saved isn't wiped away by paying interest. These cards allow you to put a set amount of cash on the card at a fixed exchange rate. So if the rate is good at the moment, you can put money on your card and it will stay that rate when you are on holiday. Just keep in mind that these cards can sometimes have hidden costs and charges so be sure to read the small print.
