
As the world commemorates the Holocaust, racism and intolerance continue to threaten our future
H olocaust Memorial Day is a moment to remember, to reflect on the present, and to contemplate the future of universal human rights.
However, the immediate focus is always, and rightly, on the unique nature of the Holocaust, which targeted Jews for slaughter and was the culmination of millennia of antisemitism. Many others died at the hands of the Nazis, their allies, and collaborators, and they should be, and are, memorialised, but it was the Jewish people of Europe who suffered from the conscious state-sponsored perversion of modern industry, organisational techniques, and transport links to exterminate 6 million people in the so-called 'Final Solution'.
Visitors to the Holocaust memorial centre at Auschwitz always remark on the sheer size of the site, and, as the largest of the concentration camps, the scene of more than a million murders, and the first to be liberated, it has come to be symbolic of this terrible episode.
One out of every six Jews killed in the Holocaust died at Auschwitz. But it was only one of 44,000 such ghettos, transit camps, factories of death, and scenes of mass murder, and the names, each chilling, also deserve to be recalled: Sobibór, Treblinka, Ravensbrück, Buchenwald, the Warsaw ghetto, Drancy, Westerbork.
On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp at sombre commemorations attended by international leaders, including King Charles, such truths are freely acknowledged.
There is an additional sense of poignancy now because so many of those first-hand witnesses who survived have passed away, some too frail to attend memorial events. There are fewer people around now who lived through the Shoah, and are brave enough to tell their harrowing stories, but their warnings from history are consistent and powerful – and more relevant than ever, retold more and more by their families and preserved in memoirs, documentaries, and archives, such as the Wiener HolocaustLibrary and the Yad Vashem international centre.
They are relevant because of the persistence of antisemitism, as with the atrocities of 7 October and the recrudescence of ancient anti-Jewish theories.
Sadly, recent years, as the Second World War recedes into history and memories fade, have seen a rise in racist extremism and intolerance in all its forms, perhaps most vividly in the rabid Islamophobia that has disfigured so much public debate.
This is most distressingly displayed on social media, but also in more mainstream channels and propagated by politicians and public figures who should know better.
Holocaust Memorial Day should give such leaders pause for thought about their words and actions, and remind them that language matters. Dehumanising language and attitudes towards minorities, refugees and immigrants have consequences, and, if unchecked, can lead to violence.
The racist riots that broke out in parts of England last summer after lies were spread are more than sufficient evidence of that danger.
When the richest man in the world, Elon Musk, now a member of the United States government, addresses a rally in Germany for the far-right AfD and tells them that their country should not feel guilt about the past, that is a symptom of something going very badly wrong in the world.
'Never again' is the phrase that comes to mind whenever the Holocaust is mentioned, but in the decades since the worst mass murders in history were committed, there have been too many more genocidal campaigns – in Cambodia, Rwanda, the former Yugoslavia and Darfur.
' Ethnic cleansing ' is an all-too-common feature of modern warfare, not least in Sudan.
Members of the Israeli government have had charges of crimes against humanity in Gaza levelled against them at the International Criminal Court.
It is also a terrible irony, and a tragedy, that no representatives of the Russian government were invited to attend the ceremonies at Auschwitz to mark the role of their country in liberating the camp – where many Soviet prisoners of war died in horrific conditions.
President Putin's brutal war of aggression in Ukraine, with its campaign of terror against civilians and suppression of Ukrainian national identity, is itself another crime against humanity, morally precluding his attendance.
Bizarrely, too, the current occupant of the White House appears to advocate the use of force as a legitimate weapon to achieve territorial expansion, though only as a bargaining tactic.
The same, it must be hoped, is also true of President Trump's suggestion that he'd like to see a 'clean-out' of Gaza and a million Palestinians possibly permanently and involuntarily displaced and relocated to Egypt and Jordan.
So, these are dark, worrying times. Britain's chief rabbi, Sir Ephraim Mirvis, asks whether we are to be the generation that allows the horrors of Auschwitz to fade into oblivion.
His answer is righteous and clear: 'Eighty years ago today, the gates of hell were finally opened, but true liberation is an ongoing task, a sacred duty to fight for a world in which every person's humanity is recognised and every soul cherished … in that spirit 'never again' is a phrase we recite, but a promise we live.'

The King revealed his penchant for an unusual choice of snack during his first official visit to Lancashire as monarch. He also advised a 'fantastic' 101-year-old veteran to 'keep drinking the whisky' and chatted to locals about varied subjects from local wool to the NHS. King Charles told Gillian Hale, from the local Butlers' Farmhouse Cheeses, that he was partial to sheep's cheese on a digestive biscuit. Ms Hale said afterwards: 'We're going to send some to him later in a goody bag. He was so gracious.' The King received a rapturous welcome on arrival at the historic Lancaster Castle, where schoolchildren lined his route, a military band played and crowds who had gathered from 5am with flasks of tea waved Union flags. He met businesses displaying wares from cheese to navigation systems before being gifted a tie and some gloves for the Queen from Northern Yarn. Business owner Kate Makin said: 'He was really interested in the regenerative farming and the local wools we use.' The King went on to a reception celebrating the county, where guests included representatives from charities, a hospice and the Lancaster Literature Festival, as well as war veteran Richard Brock, 101, who served in the D-Day landings. After asking Mr Brock's age, the King said: 'You are fantastic' before adding: 'Keep drinking the whisky.' Mr Brock, who served with the East Lancashire Regiment, said afterwards: 'He just told me I was amazing for my age.' Stephen Atkinson, the newly elected Reform UK leader of Lancashire county council, chatted to the King about his new role. Mr Atkinson said: 'He asked about my business and how I'm managing now, whether my job is full time.' A Fijian choir formed from the First Battalion of The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment – comprised of serving Fijian Kingsmen, veterans and their family members – performed for the King, who told them he was sad not to have been able to visit the country last year. He said: 'They wouldn't let me go, I was desperate to go there.' The King had been due to travel to Fiji as part of a longer tour of Australia and Samoa last autumn but the trip was curtailed following his cancer diagnosis. Among those who waited for hours to meet the King were friends Joan Hardcastle, 103, and Barbara Graham, 93, who were joined by staff and two other residents from Laurel Bank Care Home. Mrs Hardcastle held a framed photograph of the then Prince Charles presenting her with her MBE for voluntary services 40 years ago. She said: 'I've seen him several times since. He was fine when I met him, very chatty.' Care home manager Lyndsay Scott said: 'It was Barbara's idea to come. We got here at 9am, we've had flasks of tea and croissants.' Mrs Hardcastle got the chance to shake the King's hand as he left the castle, insisting he had not changed. Meanwhile, Donna Simpson, 59, was in tears after meeting the King. She asked him to pass a message to the Prince of Wales, who she met in Manchester around eight years ago when her daughter Rachel, now 25, was being treated for cancer. She said: 'We met William just after she had a bone marrow transplant. 'She is a veterinary nurse now. She has beaten the odds and I wanted them to know. 'Charles said thank you and he would let them know. I just can't believe that.' The King called a 101-year-old D-Day veteran "amazing" in his latest public appearance - and told him to "keep drinking the whisky". The monarch attended a reception at Lancaster Castle on Monday, where he met Richard Brock and remembered him from a visit to Normandy last May for the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. After asking about the veteran's age, the King said "you are fantastic", and told him as he left: "Keep drinking the whisky." Mr Brock, who served with the East Lancashire Regiment, said the King "just told me I was amazing for my age", while his son Tony Brock, who attended the reception with him, added: "He mentioned a nip of whisky and said to keep taking it." The King took part in a ceremony of keys outside the castle, a tradition which dates back to 1851 when the keys were presented to Queen Victoria and in which Queen Elizabeth II participated in 2015. Charles had arrived at the castle just before 11am to a crowd of well-wishers, and some anti-monarchy protesters who could be heard chanting "not my king" as he left his vehicle. The republican group held a yellow banner which said "abolish the Monarchy" as well as signs saying "ditch the Duchies". Inside the grounds of the castle, which was a prison until 2011, the monarch spoke to soldiers on guard, school children and local business owners who were showcasing their work. He told Gillian Hale, from Butlers' Farmhouse Cheeses, of his love for cheese, particularly sheep's cheese on a digestive biscuit. He smelled some of the cheeses the businesswoman had on display but did not taste any. The LA immigration riots are US politics at its worst
This weekend's immigration protests in LA showed every element in American politics at its absolute worst. The right was rabidly xenophobic, President Trump belligerent and authoritarian. Democratic leadership clueless, unfocused, weak and in denial – and the left manipulative and deliberately violent. Anyone with a whit of sense stayed as far away from the proceedings as possible. The right does no one any favours when they discuss America's immigration problems as a war for the future of civilisation. Maybe in the case of the Egyptian national who torched elderly Jewish people in Boulder last weekend, they have a point, but not when it comes to the quotidian ICE immigration operation that just went down in LA. But opposing that operation isn't exactly something on which the left should hang its balaclava either. Judging from the vociferous weekend-long passion play we saw unfold, you'd think that ICE had loaded the residents of an orphanage or a nunnery into a van, gouged out their eyes, and sent them to a windowless dungeon.
