Lambourn wins English Derby to give trainer Aidan O'Brien his 11th victory at the classic
EPSOM, England (AP) — Lambourn raced away from the pack to win the English Derby on Saturday, giving Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien his 11th win at the classic race.
Lambourn set the pace early and then pulled away down the final stretch to win by about 3 1/2 lenghts. The 3-year-old colt, ridden by Wayne Lordan, entered the race at 13-2 after losing to 2-1 favorite Delacroix at Leopardstown in March. But Delacroix never looked like challenging this time and finished ninth.
Lazy Griff (50-1) was second and Tennessee Stud came third.
It was O'Brien's third consecutive win at the showpiece race.
'Wayne gave him him an incredible ride," O'Brien said. 'Everybody knew what he was going to do, he's very straightforward, Wayne knew he'd stay so he went forward."
Lambourn was sired by 2014 Derby winner Australia, who in turn was sired by 2001 victor Galileo.
'It's incredible for everyone that we trained Australia to win the Derby and his sire as well, Galileo. I'm just a small part of it, everybody puts in so much, I can't tell you what a privelege it is," O'Brien said. 'Australia was a great Derby winner and his horses are so straightforward, just like him."

'Not coming back': Selwyn Cobbo cops massive new blow after Broncos axing
Selwyn Cobbo might be hard-pressed getting back into the Broncos' first-grade team anytime soon after Josiah Karapani bagged a double and looked very strong on Saturday night. Karapani scored two of Brisbane's eight tries as the Broncos bounced back to form with a 44-14 thrashing of the Titans. Starting in place of the axed Cobbo, Karapani had 15 runs for 176 metres, as well as three tackle breaks and two line breaks. The 23-year-old, who'd only played 11 games in first grade before Saturday night, doubled his career try tally and looked every bit an NRL player. He vindicated coach Michael Maguire's decision to bring him in to replace Cobbo, after also getting the nod over regular first-grader Deine Mariner. Cobbo was spotted at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night, and helped the team run through their warmup drills. He appeared to be in good spirits, and reportedly took his demotion well. Maguire explained the decision to dump him to reserve grade on Friday, saying: "As a group, and as a leadership group and as a coach, we're pushing standards here and expectations in how we're doing things, and Karapani's got his opportunity and Selly's got to look at a few things in his game. "(Karapani) has been really consistent in the way he's been playing through the pre -season ... and he's obviously experienced first grade. When he has played, he's played really well. I know he'll do a good job." Maguire refused to divulge on the areas of Cobbo's game he wants to see improved, but said he "definitely" could force his way back into the side. "I'm here to coach the team. We're creating standards and ... the more you meet those, the more opportunities you have," Maguire said. Complicating the situation with Cobbo is the fact he's off-contract at the end of 2025. According to reports, the Broncos haven't tabled him a formal offer and have prioritised the re-signing of centre Kotoni Staggs. With Gehamat Shibasaki and Jesse Arthars proving themselves as genuine first-graders, and Grant Anderson set to join the Broncos from Melbourne in 2026, it's looking increasingly likely that Cobbo will depart. If the Broncos choose to keep Cobbo, it'll likely be a one-year extension that would allow him to chase the riches on offer at expansion teams Perth or PNG from 2027. Unless there's an injury or Reece Walsh is called up for State of Origin duty for Queensland, Cobbo is set for a decent stint in Queensland Cup. One person wrote on social media: "When the media chimed up and slated Madge from dropping Cobbo, you just knew Karapani would salute. He did. Brilliant." Another wrote: "Karapani has got to retain his position after tonight. I like him a lot more than Cobbo on that wing." While a third added: "Cobbo aint coming back into this side anytime soon. Sovereignty beats Journalism to win the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga
Associated Press SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Sovereignty outran Journalism on Saturday in a Kentucky Derby rematch in the 157th Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, the race once again showcasing the best in horse racing. Like last year, it featured the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winners. However, unlike last year and for the first time since 2018, one of those two won to secure two of the three legs of the Triple Crown. 'I think they are three really good horses,' Sovereignty trainer Bill Mott said. 'I'm glad (Sovereignty) was able to come back and have a race like he did in the Derby.' It was the second Belmont win for Mott. He spends most of his summer tending to his horses at Saratoga, so winning the Belmont at Saratoga was extra special. 'This is home,' Mott said. 'It's the race we were pointing for after the Derby, and fortunately it worked out very well… The horse was good. Junior rode him well.' It was the second Belmont at Saratoga, with renovations being made to its usual home at Belmont Park on Long Island. Rodriguez, who made his Triple Crown debut, burst out and led the field of eight in the 1 1/4- mile race until the top of the stretch when Journalism made a surge. Followed closely behind was Sovereignty, with jockey Junior Alverado aboard. He caught Journalism almost instantly and ran away with it. The 5-2 second favorite finished in 2:00.69, beating Preakness winner Journalism by three lengths. 'He broke very well again today like he's been doing,' Alverado said. 'He put himself in a good spot. I was a little shocked how close, but at the same time, I'm happy with how easily he was doing everything. As a jockey, I was very happy where he was.' Journalism ended up in second again, and Baeza was third — the same 1-2-3 as the Kentucky Derby. Journalism, the only horse to run in all three legs, entered the gate at the Belmont as the 2-1 favorite, with Baeza the third favorite at 7-2. Sovereignty paid $7 to win, $3.20 to place and $2.30 to show. Journalism returned $3.20 and $2.30, and Baeza paid $2.60. Sovereignty led off the first leg of the Triple Crown by winning the Derby in early May. The colt also edged Journalism in that race. After the Derby win, the Godolphin-owned 3-year-old opted out of the Preakness to focus on the Belmont, forfeiting a shot at history to win the Triple Crown. The Triple Crown hasn't been won since 2018, when Bob Baffert's Justify won the 105th Belmont Stakes to secure the third jewel. Despite winning both legs of the Triple Crown that Sovereignty entered, Mott and Godolphin's Michael Banahan didn't regret not running him in the Preakness Stakes. 'I think if you leave the races out of it, it's what was the right thing to do for the horse,' Banahan said. 'That's what we talked about — what was the right thing for the horse to do going forward?' One of the reasons Mott and Godolphin skipped the Preakness was that they didn't want to exhaust the horse and wanted a long future for the three-year-old. There are a couple of stakes races later in the summer for three-year-olds, but the main one is at the end of the year, the Travers Stakes. The Travers, at the end of the Saratoga meet, could be another loaded field and potentially another rematch between Journalism and Sovereignty. 'I'd love to come back and take a crack at the Travers in August,' Mott said. 'It's a race I've never won, but I think it's a very important race for a three-year-old like Sovereignty. Zach Root, Gabe Gaeckle shackle Tennessee on two hits, Arkansas tops defending champs 4-3

(AP) — Zach Root and Gabe Gaeckle combined on a two-hitter, Ryder Helfrick hit the go-ahead home run, and Arkansas defeated defending national champion Tennessee 4-3 on Saturday in the opening game of the best-of-three Fayetteville Super Regional. Helfrick's two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning gave Arkansas a 3-2 lead and Charles Davalan drove in a run with a single that made it 4-2 in the sixth. Root (8-5) started and went seven innings, allowing one hit and one earned run. Gaeckle threw two innings in relief, allowing the other hit and one run for his second save. Dean Curley's two-run home run in the fifth inning gave the Volunteers a 2-1 lead. It was their only hit until Andrew Fischer's solo home run in the ninth. The Razorbacks' Cam Kozeal scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Tennessee starter Marcus Phillips (4-5) allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. Tennessee (46-18) is making its fifth straight super regional appearance. Arkansas (47-13) is making its third appearance since 2021.
