– North Korea has completed construction of a massive tourist zone on its east coast, state media reported on June 26 , a key project driven by leader Kim Jong Un for years to promote tourism.
Mr Kim attended an inaugural ceremony for the Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist area that could accommodate about 20,000 visitors and said the country would build more large-scale tourist zones swiftly, said news agency KCNA.
He has been rebuilding the seaside city of Wonsan, a vacation destination for locals, to turn it into a billion-dollar tourist hot spot. Development plans for Wonsan have mushroomed since they were announced in 2014.
However, while tourism is one of a narrow range of cash sources for North Korea not targeted by UN sanctions, the reclusive state did not have a major foreign partner for the Wonsan project against the backdrop of sanctions over its weapons programmes.
The tourist zone will open for domestic guests from July 1, KCNA said, without mentioning foreign tourists.

North Korea sealed its borders in 2020 at the start of the pandemic but has been slowly lifting restrictions since 2023.
It has allowed Russian tourist groups into the country but its capital and other parts of the country remain closed to regular tourism, though in April it held a marathon event hosting foreign runners.
Moscow and Pyongyang, both economically and politically isolated, have drawn closer as North Korea has deployed thousands of troops and supplied ammunition, artillery and missiles for Russia's Ukraine war.
The Russian ambassador to North Korea and embassy staff were invited as special guests for the Wonsan ceremony, said KCNA.
The two countries have agreed to expand cooperation on tourism, restarting a direct passenger train service between their capitals for the first time since 2020.
'Kim Jong Un expressed belief that the wave of the happiness to be raised in the Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist area would enhance its attractive name as a world-level tourist cultural resort,' KCNA said. REUTERS

REUTERS/Hatem Khaled/File Photo WASHINGTON - The U.S. State Department has approved $30 million in funding for the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, the State Department said on Thursday, calling on other countries to also support the controversial group delivering aid in war-torn Gaza. "This support is simply the latest iteration of President Trump's and Secretary Rubio's pursuit of peace in the region," State Department deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott told reporters at a regular news briefing. Reuters was first to report the move earlier this week. Washington has long backed the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation diplomatically, but this is the first known U.S. government financial contribution to the organization, which uses private for-profit U.S. military and logistics firms to transport aid into the Palestinian enclave for distribution at so-called secure sites. Since Israel lifted an 11-week aid blockade on Gaza on May 19, allowing limited U.N. deliveries to resume, the United Nations says more than 400 Palestinians have been killed seeking aid from both the U.N. and GHF operations. Earlier this month, GHF halted aid deliveries for a day as it pressed Israel to boost civilian safety near its distribution sites after dozens of Palestinians seeking aid were killed. It says there have been no incidents at its sites. The foundation's executive director, Johnnie Moore, an evangelical preacher who was a White House adviser in the first Trump administration, said in a post on X on Thursday that the group has delivered more than 46 million meals to Gazans since it began its operations in May. Some U.S. officials opposed giving any U.S. funds to the foundation over concerns about violence near aid distribution sites, the GHF's inexperience and the involvement of the for-profit U.S. logistics and private military firms, four sources told Reuters earlier this week. The United States could approve additional monthly grants of $30 million for the GHF, two sources said, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity. In approving the U.S. funding for the GHF, the sources said the State Department exempted the foundation, which has not publicly disclosed its finances, from an audit usually required for groups receiving USAID grants for the first time. There is an acute shortage of food and other basic supplies after the nearly two-year military campaign by Israel that has displaced most of Gaza's two million inhabitants. Countries agree 10% increase for UN climate budget

The deal, agreed by nearly 200 countries - from Japan to Saudi Arabia, to small island nations like Fiji - at U.N. climate negotiations in Bonn, comes despite major funding cuts at other U.N. agencies, triggered in part by the U.S. slashing its contributions, and political pushback on ambitious climate policies in European countries. Countries agreed to a core budget of 81.5 million euros for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) over 2026-2027, up 10% from 2024-2025. The core budget is funded by government contributions. The deal includes an increase in China's contribution, reflecting the country's economic growth. China, the world's second-biggest economy, would cover 20% of the new budget, up from 15% previously. Only the United States, the world's biggest economy, was allocated a bigger share, of 22%. However, President Donald Trump quit the U.N. Paris climate agreement and halted international climate funding. Bloomberg Philanthropies has pledged to cover the U.S. contribution to the UNFCCC budget. The U.S. did not attend the U.N. climate talks this week in Bonn, Germany where the budget was approved. UN climate chief Simon Stiell welcomed the increase as "a clear signal that governments continue to see U.N.-convened climate cooperation as essential, even in difficult times." The UNFCCC runs annual climate negotiations among countries and helps implement deals that are made - including the 2015 Paris Agreement, which commits nearly all nations to limit global warming. The body has faced a severe budget shortfall in recent years, as major donors including China and the U.S. had not paid on time, prompting the body to cut costs including by cancelling some events. The UNFCC's running costs and headcount - its core budget funded 181 staff in 2025 - are smaller than some other U.N. bodies facing sharp funding cuts, such as the U.N. trade and development agency's roughly 400 staff. Meanwhile, the U.N. Secretariat, the global body's executive arm, is preparing to slash its $3.7 billion budget by 20%, according to an internal memo.
