Traffic police issue advisory on fake challans

The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has issued an advisory on fraudulent WhatsApp messages circulating, using the GCTP logo as a display picture and sharing links that mimic traffic challan payments. The advisory also appealed to the public not to click on these links —they may be deceptive. 'If you receive such messages, promptly report them to us,' said the GCTP. A senior police officer said earlier, fraudsters send challans and phishing links looking deceptively similar to those issued by the traffic police. Now they have adopted this new technique of sending fraudulent WhatsApp messages, using the GCTP logo as a display picture and sharing links that mimic traffic challan payments. However no complaint was received yet. The e-challan scam involves sending a WhatsApp message about a traffic violation with a link. When clicked or when an app is downloaded via the link, the fraudsters gain access to the bank accounts of the user. These fake websites look similar to official portals and are designed to steal credit card details, Aadhaar numbers, and login credentials, said Sankaraj Subramanian, a cyber expert.

Railways to undertake random verification of Aadhaar to check for illegal immigrants

The Indian Railways has issued an alert on illegal immigrants using fake or forged Aadhaar cards as proof of identity while travelling and directed Travelling Ticket Examiners to check at random the veracity of the document. In a note to Principal Chief Commercial Managers of all Zonal Railways issued on Thursday, the Railway Board said instances of individuals staying unauthorisedly in India with fake or forged Aadhaar cards and using them as proof of identity for various purposes, including employment and travel, had come to notice. To curb impersonation and misuse of Aadhaar card, it was imperative to strengthen identity verification mechanism. Ticket checking staff should check and verify the identity document of passengers at random. Wherever it was found to be a fake or forged document or in case of any suspicion, the matter should be immediately referred to the Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force for necessary action. Download mAadhaar app The Railway Board said the ticket checking staff should download and use the mAadhaar App (available for free on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store) on their mobile phones. The mAadhaar application, developed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), was useful in easy verification of the document. The application provided several features, including QR code-based verification, which enabled reliable and paperless identity validation. Upon scanning the QR code on an Aadhaar card, the application would display key identity information such as photograph, Aadhaar number, name, gender, date of birth and address, thereby facilitating real-time verification of the authenticity of the document. 'This application works in offline mode also. This application might serve as a useful tool to curb impersonation and misuse of Aadhaar card,' the Railway Board said. Besides passengers, the note said the mobile-based verification app should also be used to verify the genuineness of contractual onboard staff, including On Board House Keeping, Catering staff etc. The move comes a day after the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) deactivated 2.5 crore suspect user IDs as part of a digital overhaul of its ticketing infrastructure.

CP: Stricter passport check to root out illegal immigrants

Kolkata: Breaking the syndicates dealing with illegal immigration by identifying the gang heads and double-checking all received ID documents from the source to examine their authenticity were the two reasons behind the changes introduced in passport verification, said Kolkata Police commissioner on Thursday, stressing the aim was to ensure illegal immigrants could not stay on. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "We have re-evaluated the passport verification system. Our primary target is to identify syndicate members and individuals involved in such illegal activities. Wherever documents are getting used, we are scrutinising and verifying them right back to their source," Verma. "The accused at times use different addresses for different cases. We are cross-checking Aadhaar addresses with other ID documents." Verma was speaking to reporters after planting saplings at the Alipore Bodyguard Lines on World Environment Day on Thursday. He urged citizens to plant at least 10 trees as a "contribution to society". Going back to passport verification, Verma pointed out that no new passport would be issued nor any old one renewed without an address visit. Even cops asking passport applicants to visit police stations would face action, Verma said. The SOP says all documents of a passport applicant will be uploaded on the portal to root out discrepancy. Applicants can monitor document verification status through a link provided by police.
