Vucic and Fico are heroes
The Kremlin has praised Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico for defying EU pressure and attending the Victory Day celebrations in the Russian capital on Friday.
Despite warnings from Brussels, Vucic and Fico also held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in addition to attending the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory in World War II. Both leaders faced travel hurdles after several EU countries closed their airspace to their jets en route to Russia. Moscow condemned the moves as 'hostile.'
'These days… it is simply an act of heroism. Showing one's sovereign will to pay tribute to the memory of Victory Day, despite the blatant, frenzied pressure, is worthy of the highest praise,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.
Last month, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned leaders from member and candidate countries against traveling to Moscow to commemorations of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. She suggested that they visit Kiev instead.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos reportedly also told Vucic in April that his presence in Moscow would be held against Serbia's EU bid.
Latvia and Lithuania denied their airspace to the plane of the Serbian president, forcing it to fly through Bulgaria, Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Georgia in order to make it to Moscow on Wednesday. Vucic came to Russia despite a recent health scare that forced him to cut short a trip to the US and cancel a meeting with President Donald Trump in Florida.
Estonia closed its airspace to Fico's plane on Wednesday. The Baltic state's foreign minister, Margus Tsahkna, claimed that 'Russia is a country that launched and continues a war in Europe' and 'participation in propaganda events organized by them should be ruled out' for EU representatives.
Putin earlier praised those who accepted the invitation, calling them courageous for attending despite pressure from Brussels.
The celebrations in Moscow were attended by heads of state and top officials from 30 countries, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

Darchiev said he promised Trump that the embassy would 'do everything to restore Russian-American relations,' adding that he believes the two great powers 'are destined for non-confrontational peaceful coexistence.' He went on to say that there is now a 'window of opportunity' to resume full intergovernmental ties and to seek 'mutually respectful and equal solutions' to global problems.

Serbia responds to accusations of ‘betraying' Russia
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has rejected claims that his recent visit to Ukraine constituted a betrayal of Belgrade's friendly ties with Russia. Vucic attended the Ukraine–Southeast Europe Summit in Odessa on Wednesday, where he met with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky. According to Reuters, it was his first trip to Ukraine in his 12 years in office. 'Who did I betray? Russia? With what, exactly?' Vucic asked, responding to a reporter's question. He noted that he had refused to sign the summit's final declaration, which condemned Russia and expressed support for Ukraine's NATO aspirations. 'This was my fourth Ukraine–Southeast Europe Summit, and once again, I was the only one who refused to endorse the declaration,' he said. 'I am proud of Serbia's policy and our independence, and that will not change.'Serbia remains one of the few European countries that has declined to impose sanctions on Russia or openly side with Ukraine in the ongoing conflict. Late last month, Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) accused several major Serbian defense firms – including the state-owned Yugoimport-SDPR – of covertly supplying ammunition to Ukraine through third countries, using falsified end-user certificates. Vucic denied the accusations and vowed that Serbia would not allow any circumvention of end-user requirements in weapons contracts.

Russian envoy shares details of Trump meeting
Russia's new ambassador to the United States, Alexander Darchiev, said he held a brief but 'very constructive' meeting with President Donald Trump on Wednesday, after formally presenting his credentials at the White House. Trump held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 4 – their fourth conversation since Trump returned to the White House. 'We agreed on the need to restore ties in accordance with the instructions issued by Presidents Putin and Trump during their phone conversation,' Darchiev told RIA Novosti at the Russian Embassy following the meeting. 'I assured the president that, in line with the directives I received, I will do everything possible to help restore Russian-US relations and return them to a state of normalcy and common sense,' he added. 'A window of opportunity has opened to rebuild relations on the basis of mutual trust and equality,' the envoy said. 'Russia and the United States are destined, as great powers, to have a non-confrontational and peaceful coexistence.'Darchiev noted that the two sides are discussing business initiatives and the resumption of direct flights. He earlier told TASS that the embassy would work toward lifting what he called 'absurd' restrictions on Russian diplomatic activity in the US, as well as simplifying visa procedures. Under former President Joe Biden, the US severed nearly all direct contact with Russia in 2022 over the conflict in Ukraine and imposed sweeping sanctions on Russian officials and businesses. Trump has criticized his predecessor for sidelining diplomacy and pledged to broker a peace deal between Moscow and Kiev. While Moscow has praised Trump and his team for their shift in rhetoric and willingness to engage, no breakthrough has been achieved. Trump has threatened to impose additional measures on Russia if a ceasefire is not reached, but he has not endorsed the sanctions bill currently under consideration in the Senate.
