Gorewada zoo entry gate to move closer to city for African Safari expansion
Nagpur: The popular
Gorewada Zoo
will come 'closer' to the city, with its main entry gate scheduled to be relocated as part of the
African Safari expansion
plan. Officially called
Balasaheb Thackeray Gorewada International Zoological Park
, the facility's main gate will move 800 meters towards the city, thus making it easier to access.
Highly-placed sources told TOI that the gate will still be located on the same road (Nagpur-Katol) but will be moved to align with the ambitious African safari plans. "When the African safari opens for the public, it will be from the new gate," a senior official told TOI.
Earlier this month, forest minister Ganesh Naik informed the media that the central govt's National Building Construction Company (NBCC) will be handling the African safari project. "We expect the construction to start by the end of this year, and a tentative timeline for completion is two years. But these are just estimates; delays can happen due to unforeseen reasons," said the official.
The current entry gate of the Gorewada Zoo won't be closed, and even its massive parking lot will be utilised. The official said, "But the existing gate and parking lot won't be used by the public. The zoo's vehicles, be it buses or others, shall be parked there. Also, the cargo which comes into the zoo will enter from this gate."
Widening of the
Nagpur-Katol road
is progressing rapidly, and it will prove beneficial for visitors who come to the zoo.

Leopard may have left Pune airport premises, say forest officials
Pune: Senior officials of the state forest department have said the leopard first sighted on the premises of the Pune airport on April 28 has not been seen after May 15 and may have left the area. The leopard confirmed as a fully grown male by the forest department was sighted multiple times at the airside, but could not be captured, chief conservator of forests, Pune, Praveen NR told TOI. "There is a chance it is not present in the area. Our teams are vigilant nevertheless and we will resume our search operations immediately if it is seen again." On April 28, the leopard was seen first at 7am and then at 8pm near the runway. Many flyers seated in their flights had made videos of the animal sitting calmly near the runway. The sighting had triggered a massive search and capture operation. The animal was clever enough to elude the authorities for more than a month since then. "We stopped the search after launch of Operation Sindoor in early May. We resumed after the op was over, but the animal couldn't be sighted. We are in touch with authorities of IAF and Pune airport. We have requested that they let us know if the leopard is seen again so that we can take action," the official added. In the week leading to May 17, the forest department had intensified its efforts to rescue the leopard. The animal couldn't be captured in any of the camera traps, but some IAF officials told forest department officials that they had spotted it on May 15. "The animal has not been seen since then. We removed the many trap cameras and cages during Operation Sindoor. It is difficult to say where the animal has gone," another forest official said. Authorities have said the leopard was surviving on rodents and stray dogs while it roamed the premises spread over 3,500 acres. When the leopard was spotted first, the IAF spokesperson had said, "There was only one report of the leopard sighting before April 28 and it was not corroborated. We had informed forest officials, who visited the location but couldn't find any trail leading to the leopard." Pune airport officials said they are on alert. "Safety instructions on the leopard stand even now and a watch is kept. Any sighting will be communicated to the forest department. We cannot comment further since the airside is under IAF," a senior airport official told TOI. Meanwhile, Vatsala Khurana, a resident of Marvel Piazza located close to the airport, told TOI, "We were scared when the leopard was spotted in April and a lot of precautions were taken. All that is behind us now and there is no fear. Life is back to normal." A resident of another housing society located at close proximity to the airport boundary wall agreed. "We do discuss the leopard at times and wonder where it went. We have no updates from any official. We stay alert even though there is no fear any more," he said, requesting anonymity.

FYJC seat allocation for 1st CAP round to now begin on June 26
Nashik: The first allotment list under the Common Admission Process (CAP) for FYJC admissions will now be announced on June 26, instead of June 10 as per the earlier schedule, in respective junior colleges and on students' login portals. The cut-offs for admissions will also be available on the portal. The first round of admissi-on confirmations will begin on June 27, when students can log into their accounts and, if allotted their preferred colleges, click to proceed with admission. A fresh timetable issued on Saturday for FYJC admissions across the state said that the general merit list will be published on Wednesday. The zero-round for management and in-house quota allocations is scheduled for Thursday, allowing students seeking quota-based admissions to finalise their seats in the respective colleges between June 12 and 14. Students who have filed their forms can go through the provisional general merit list announced by the department of education and suggest corrections or file grievances till Monday, a senior officer from the office of the deputy director of education in Nashik told TOI. Deputy directors of education in all the divisions must address the objections and grievances by Monday evening. "The merit list of eligible candidates will be prepared on June 17, and allocations will begin for CAP round 1. The same will be audited by the divisional CAP committees to ensure there are no anomalies," the officer said. "Students will then have to approach their allotted colleges with documents for verification and payment of the prescribed fees with the confirmation of admission. All this will have to be done by the students by July 3. " Students who do not take admissions despite allocation to the college of their choice will have to skip the following round before being eligible to participate in the admission process again. "For students who have been allotted their first preference, it is compulsory to take admission in that college. If such students fail to take admission, they will be blocked for the next regular round. They can then only be considered for subsequent rounds," said the officer.
