Winnipeg police handle busy night of weapons arrests, stabbings

Global News2 days ago

Winnipeg police had a busy night, dealing with multiple unrelated weapons incidents all over town.
Police said a series of violent incidents between Wednesday and Thursday ultimately led to five arrests — with the potential for more to come — and three people taken to hospital.
The first incident took place late Wednesday afternoon, when police found a stabbing victim near Abinoji Mikanah and Dakota Street. The suspect had fled the scene before police arrived, and the victim was taken to hospital in stable condition.
Barely an hour and a half later, a man in his 40s was mowing his lawn on Henderson Highway, when a suspect with a machete appeared and demanded sunglasses, police said, before allegedly assaulting the man with the weapon and riding off on a bike.

Police tracked the suspect down, with the help of an off-duty officer who was nearby. The 28-year-old is in custody facing charges including robbery, weapon possession, and violating a court order.

Twenty minutes later, around 7:20 p.m., a traffic stop near Cambridge Street and Yale Avenue led to the discovery of a loaded Glock handgun and crack cocaine. Four occupants of the vehicle were arrested. A 19-year-old and 20-year-old were charged with gun and drug offences and taken into custody.
The other suspects, also 19 and 20, face similar charges but were released on undertakings.
Two hours after that, officers were called to McKelvey Street where they found a man in his 40s, who police say was the victim of a stabbing during a group confrontation. The man was taken to hospital in unstable condition, but later upgraded to stable.
Finally, around 3 a.m., officers were called to the scene of a stabbing at Portage Avenue and Vaughn Street. The victim — also in his 40s — was taken to hospital in stable condition.
Anyone with information about any of the incidents is asked to call major crimes investigators at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

U.K. judge warns of risk to justice after lawyers cited fake AI-generated cases in court

Lawyers have cited fake cases generated by artificial intelligence in court proceedings in England, a judge has said — warning that attorneys could be prosecuted if they don't check the accuracy of their research. High Court justice Victoria Sharp said the misuse of AI has 'serious implications for the administration of justice and public confidence in the justice system.' In the latest example of how judicial systems around the world are grappling with how to handle the increasing presence of artificial intelligence in court, Sharp and fellow judge Jeremy Johnson chastised lawyers in two recent cases in a ruling on Friday. They were asked to rule after lower court judges raised concerns about 'suspected use by lawyers of generative artificial intelligence tools to produce written legal arguments or witness statements which are not then checked,' leading to false information being put before the court. Story continues below advertisement In a ruling written by Sharp, the judges said that in a USD$120-million lawsuit over an alleged breach of a financing agreement involving the Qatar National Bank, a lawyer cited 18 cases that did not exist. But Sharp said it was 'extraordinary that the lawyer was relying on the client for the accuracy of their legal research, rather than the other way around.' In the other incident, a lawyer cited five fake cases in a tenant's housing claim against the London Borough of Haringey. Barrister Sarah Forey denied using AI, but Sharp said she had 'not provided to the court a coherent explanation for what happened.' The judges referred the lawyers in both cases to their professional regulators, but did not take more serious action. Sharp said providing false material as if it were genuine could be considered contempt of court or, in the 'most egregious cases,' perverting the course of justice, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. She said in the judgment that AI is a 'powerful technology' and a 'useful tool' for the law. Story continues below advertisement 'Artificial intelligence is a tool that carries with it risks as well as opportunities,' the judge said. 'Its use must take place therefore with an appropriate degree of oversight, and within a regulatory framework that ensures compliance with well-established professional and ethical standards if public confidence in the administration of justice is to be maintained.'

Suspect wanted for allegedly setting on fire two vehicles and garage in Christie Pits

The man in the photos is wanted in connection with an arson investigation. (Toronto Police Service) Toronto police have released a photo of a suspect accused of deliberately setting two vehicles and a garage on fire in the Christie Pits neighbourhood on Thursday. Police said they received a call at 4 a.m. for a vehicle fire in the area of Shaw Street and Yarmouth Road, south of Dupont Street. When they arrived, crews found a burning vehicle, which was unoccupied at the time, police said. Officers did not locate a suspect. About two hours later, crews responded to a fire in a detached garage. Police said both the structure and a vehicle inside were on fire. No one was inside the vehicle at the time. An individual was seen on the garage rooftop before the incident, police said. However, officers did not find the suspect upon arrival. The suspect is described as being in his 30s, between five-foot-six and five-foot-eight, with a slim to medium build, light brown hair in a ponytail, and clean-shaven. He was last seen wearing a blue sweatshirt, blue sweatpants and grey shoes. Police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 416-808-1400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
