
Berjaya Food reports wider loss in 3Q25, remains focused on long-term growth and expansion
KUALA LUMPUR: Berjaya Food Bhd (BFood), which reported its sixth consecutive loss-making quarter, remains committed to growth and diversification by actively expanding its brand portfolio and exploring both local and international markets, despite ongoing challenges faced by Starbucks.
BFood said that although current growth remains modest, significant efforts are underway to reposition the business for greater resilience.
'The group is focusing on steadily building a strong foundation for future value creation. Strategic initiatives are already underway to enhance operational performance, and though the impact may not yet be substantial, the direction is clear.
'With continuous efforts to strengthen the core business and execute on its strategic roadmap, the group is well-positioned for sustained progress and improved financial outcomes over time,' BFood said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia.
In the third quarter ended March 31 (3Q25), BFood posted a wider net loss of RM37.2mil, compared to RM29.8mil in the same period last year, marking its sixth consecutive loss-making quarter.
Revenue for the quarter fell to RM113.6mil, down from RM138.6mil last year, while loss per share increased to 2.10 sen, compared to 1.68 sen previously.
BFood said the lower revenue was mainly due to a reduced number of stores in operation compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
It said the higher loss was mainly due to the weaker performance of Kenny Rogers Roasters' operations and additional pre-operating costs incurred for the group's overseas operations
For the nine months ended March 31, BFood reported a net loss of RM106.2mil, compared to RM53.3mil previously, while revenue dropped to RM360.9mil from RM599.7mil last year.
BFood attributed the lower revenue and profit to the prolonged impact of the ongoing sentiment surrounding the Middle East conflict, which affected market dynamics and influenced customer spending patterns.

Starbucks in a froth over names of presidential candidates
Starbucks outlets in the country have banned customers from using the names of presidential candidates – or the disgraced ex-president – for their orders, the coffee giant said. South Korea is holding snap presidential elections on June 3, to decide who will replace impeached former president Yoon Suk-yeol, ousted last month for his disastrous attempt to impose martial law in December. In South Korea, Starbucks stores run a 'Call My Name' service, which allows customers to select a nickname – which they input via the Starbucks app – that baristas use to announce orders when complete. Customers will not be able to use the names of all seven presidential candidates, including frontrunner Lee Jae-myung, and main conservative rival Kim Moon-soo, until after the vote, the company said yesterday. Starbucks said that they had taken the action, which was announced this week as official campaigning started, based on past experience of customers misusing the 'Call My Name' feature during previous elections. The feature is a 'unique Starbucks service designed to build a sense of connection between store staff and customers', the company said in a statement. 'We do not take any religious or political stance, and we actively monitor and restrict the use of negative language, profanity, sexually explicit content, or any expressions that may be difficult or inappropriate for our staff to call out.' The company is also banning customers from using the name of ex-president Yoon, who has been stripped of office and is facing an ongoing criminal trial on insurrection grounds. Yoon's martial law, which he claimed was necessary to break legislative gridlock and 'root out' pro-North Korea 'anti-state' forces, garnered support from right-wing YouTubers. Yoon's conservative People Power Party has not yet expelled him, and its official candidate, Kim Moon-soo, has drawn public attention as the only Cabinet member who refused to bow in apology for failing to prevent Yoon's attempted suspension of civilian rule. — AFP

CIMB cuts Berjaya Food forecasts amid weak Q3, sluggish sales recovery
KUALA LUMPUR: Berjaya Food Bhd is expected to see slower-than-expected sales recovery after its core net loss widened in the third quarter ended March 31, 2025 (Q3FY25). CIMB Securities has raised its core net loss estimates for the company to RM133 RM133million, RM74 million and RM23 million for financial year 2025 (FY25), FY26 and FY27, respectively. The estimates were revised upwards from the previous forecast of RM104 million, RM61 million and RM20 million. The firm also lowered its target price for the stock to 28 sen from 32 sen previously. Berjaya Food reported a core net loss of RM36.7 million in 3QFY25, after adjusting for one-off items of RM0.5 million. This brought the cumulative nine-month core net loss to RM101.2 million, missing CIMB Securities' expectations at 97 per cent for the FY25 previous loss estimate and 110 per cent of the Bloomberg consensus forecast. "The earnings miss is attributed to lower-than-expected revenue from Starbucks and Kenny Rogers Roasters operations, as well as higher-than-expected start-up costs for its overseas expansion efforts," it said in a note. Berjaya Food is likely to post narrow losses in Q4 Q4FY25 following the end of Ramadan fasting in March. Additionally, the company has indicated early signs of recovery at its Malaysia Starbucks outlets, as the impact of the boycott related to the Israel-Palestine conflict appears to be easing. "The group's ongoing efforts to rationalise its store network by closing underperforming outlets may also support loss mitigation." The firm maintained its 'Reduce' call on the stock.
