Polestar restarts market expansion with France
PARIS, June 11 (Reuters) - Swedish premium carmaker Polestar will start delivering its electric vehicles in France this year with the goal of making it one of its three main European markets, its top executive for the country told Reuters.
Confronted with a cash crunch, tariff pressures, and a broad slowdown in EV demand, the company, majority-owned by China's Geely Holding, has decided to focus its efforts more on profitable Europe.
Even there, though, its initial rapid expansion has stalled, with the last new market launches dating back to 2022.
"We are a young company, given we have had a very steady rhythm of launches and market openings, it is good too, at some point to pause for a moment, before launching again a cycle of market openings", Stephane Le Guevel, managing director for Polestar France, said.
"We have decided this year to concentrate on France and to restart the tempo next year. We have talked about Central Europe and LatAm", he said.
While the Sweden-based automaker has attempted to conquer the U.S. and Chinese markets, its premium cars have been better received in Europe, which accounts for 75% of its sales.
Le Guével said that the automaker hoped France would, over the medium term, go on to become one of its top-selling markets in Europe, currently being Britain and Sweden.
Polestar has tried to take on other premium brands, such as Mercedes, BMW, Audi, and Tesla, which it targeted in national ad campaigns seeking to entice Tesla owners to switch to Polestar.
But its expansion has been on hold since it launched in Spain, Portugal and Italy about three years ago.
In France, Polestar will start taking orders for its 2, 3 and 4 models on Wednesday, at starting prices ranging from 46,800 euros ($53,474) to 79,800 euros ($91,180). The first French showroom will open in Le Mans in July and first deliveries are expected from October.
The company plans to have a robust servicing network and dedicated selling points still relying on its former owner Volvo Cars, which continues to manufacture some Polestar models.
The company's French launch has been delayed by a complaint filed by PSA - now part of Stellantis (STLAM.MI), opens new tab - arguing the Polestar logo looked too much like the DS brand logo.
Both parties reached an agreement in 2022 without disclosing its financial details.

Lead EU lawmaker on sustainability laws proposes more cuts
BRUSSELS, June 12 (Reuters) - The European Union should further slash the number of companies subject to its environmental and corporate sustainability rules, the European Parliament member leading negotiations on the policies said on Thursday. The European Commission proposed a "simplification omnibus" in February that it said would help European firms compete with foreign rivals by cutting back on sustainability reporting rules and obligations intended to root out abuses in their supply chains. Those proposals did not go far enough, according to Swedish centre-right lawmaker Jörgen Warborn, who has drafted amendments to scale back the laws further to only cover companies with 3,000 employees or more and over 450 million euros ($521 million) in turnover. The Commission proposal would exempt companies with fewer than 1,000 employees - already, cutting out more than 80% of the roughly 50,000 companies currently covered by the green reporting rules. The EU counts around 6,000 companies with more than 1,000 employees. "Europe is falling behind the U.S. and China in the global race for competitiveness. I'm entering this process with a clear ambition: to cut costs for businesses and go further than the Commission on simplification," Warborn said in a statement on Thursday. His draft proposal must be negotiated in the European Parliament where other lawmakers can propose their own amendments. The Parliament will agree the final changes with EU member countries in the coming months. Warborn, a member of the centre-right European People's Party lawmaker group, is facing competing calls from some right-wing lawmakers to scrap the policies entirely, and Socialist and Green lawmakers vowing to preserve them. French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have both demanded the EU scrap the supply chain law. But the walk-back on ESG rules has met resistance from some investors and campaigners, who have warned it weakens corporate accountability and hurts the bloc's ability to attract more investments towards meeting climate goals. Warborn said his proposed changes will not weaken Europe's sustainability standards, but rather free up resources that companies can instead invest in innovation. ($1 = 0.8633 euros)

Buy Hyundai Inster Price, PPC or HP
The others come in Long Range flavour only. Want the 02? That'll be £26,755 please. If you choose the slightly more oddball Inster Cross, that's £28,755. There are three trims: 01, 02 and Cross. The 01 comes with two powertrain options, the 97bhp/42kWh setup at £23,505 or the 115bhp/49kWh Long Range one at £25,055. If you go for Hyundai's PCP finance package, then as a guide the 01 Long Range will set you back £324 a month over three years/30,000 miles with a deposit of £2,400. What are the trims like? You get a reasonable amount of kit with the entry level 01 model – 15in alloy wheels, aircon, auto headlights and wipers, heated folding door mirrors, fancy adaptive cruise control, heat pump, rear parking sensors and rear camera, keyless go, satnav and Apple/Android connectivity. If you upgrade to 02 you get 17in alloys, sliding rear seats, LED lights front and rear, roof rails, heated front seats and steering wheel, ambient lighting, front parking sensors, more speakers and the option of a tech pack that includes a mains power socket and a smart key feature for your phone. Listed like that, the extra price of 02 seems worthwhile. The Cross version doesn't offer you much more than plastic cladding and bumpers that were dreamed up by the marketing department, along with an optional basket that sits on the roof rack for all your 'lifestyle' needs.

Hyundai Inster Interior Layout & Technology
Interior What is it like on the inside? The Inster's cabin is fun and distinctive, with some neat little touches. We like that Hyundai has made extensive use of recycled materials in here. Like the 100 per cent recycled PET seat coverings with a houndstooth-adjacent 'Pepita' pattern that offers a touch of sophistication. Though don't stare at the seats too long because they'll make your eyes go funny. Phew, look at those screens. Yes, plonked neatly on top of the dashboard are twin 10.25in screens that form a digital dashboard and infotainment display. The dash offers up a useful configurable layout with an array of faithfully digital recreations of dials. We quite liked the more left field pulsing cubes that make good use of the tech. Advertisement - Page continues below The screens and graphics are lifted pretty much wholesale from loads of Hyundais – not the very latest system, but even this last-gen setup is as good as other makers' most current efforts. Though it can feel slow at times, like when you're trying to turn the irritating ADAS alarms off before every journey. Come on Hyundai, we've got places to be. Below the central screen are volume and zoom knobs, and between them a row of actual buttons, shortcutting to media, setup, nav, and a configurable favourite. Where's the Hyundai logo? This is one of the peculiar things about modern Hyundais – you'd never be able to tell you were in one from behind the wheel. The Korean carmaker has wiped its interiors clean of its distinctive logo. Fun fact though for you, those squares on the steering wheel are meant to spell out the letter H in Morse code. Advertisement - Page continues below Looks like there's plenty of storage in there. There's a decent array of cubbies, although the dashboard has to work hard to make up for the lack of centre console. The front seats act like a bench, and as there's no centre console you can easily get to the driver's side from either door. Whether the absence of a proper centre storage bin makes the slide-across facility worthwhile is another question. Having lived with a BMW i3, we'd say not. All the storage you're left with is a bit of small-object space below the climate controls, and a trough above the glovebox – but that doesn't have a rubber mat so your nicknacks will rattle and slither about. USB sockets live there (that's where you plug your phone in – and then back in after it flies off the dash when you take a corner over-enthusiastically), and in the upper spec there are more in the rear. Plus a mains voltage socket. What about the back? The Inster's narrowness means just two seats and two seatbelts. But that's not all. While there's a normal bench for the base 01 spec, the 02 has a pair of sliding/reclining ones. Slide them back and legroom becomes pretty palatial. It's a clever urban taxi, like the Mk1 Renault Twingo. Of course, set up that way the boot is correspondingly tiny, albeit it has an underfloor cubby. You've got 280 litres of space in the boot with the seats in their normal position, which can be increased to 351 litres in the 02 and Cross versions (if your rear passengers have little legs and you slide the back seats forward as far as they'll go). With all the seats down you've got 1,059 litres of space to make use of. Usefully the front passenger seat folds forward if you've got something bulky to shift.
