India has launched missiles at several locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administred Kashmir, the government said, and Pakistan promised to respond to the attacks.
Dubbing it 'Operation Sindoor', India said it hit infrastructure 'from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed'.
'Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution,' the Indian statement said.
India has blamed Pakistan for an attack last month in Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 people.
The Pakistani government has denied any involvement and called for an 'neutral' investigation into what happened.
Pakistan reported at least three people died and 12 were injured, according to an initial assessment.
Pakistan said India launched missiles at three places, but an Indian government statement did not detail the nature of the strikes.
A Pakistani military spokesman told broadcaster Geo that Pakistan's response was under way, without giving details.
The spokesman said five places were hit including two mosques and reported three deaths and 12 people injured.
The spokesman for Pakistan's armed forces says the military will respond to India's strike 'at a time and place of its own choosing'.
'It will not go unanswered,' the spokesman said in the statement, carried by the Associated Press of Pakistan.
After the explosions, power was blacked out in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, witnesses said.
Witnesses and one police officer at two sites on the frontier in Indian Kashmir said they heard loud explosions and intense artillery shelling as well as jets in the air.

Sri Lanka to host Pakistan matches at ICC Women's World Cup

Agencies London Sri Lanka will host matches at this year's Women's World Cup as part of ongoing arrangements surrounding fixtures involving India and Pakistan, reports India's refusal to travel to Pakistan for the men's Champions Trophy earlier this year prompted the International Cricket Council (ICC) to introduce neutral venues to tournaments hosted by either nation. As part of the plans, announced in December, neither country will travel to the other for an ICC event. The Sri Lankan city of Colombo will join Indian cities Bengaluru, Guwahati, Indore and Visakhapatnam in staging the Women's World Cup, which runs from 30 September until 2 November. Colombo will host Pakistan's seven group games, including against India and England. It will also host a semi-final and the final if Pakistan make it that far. Bengaluru will stage the opening match, involving India, and the final if Pakistan are not involved. The full list of fixtures for the eight-team tournament is still to be announced. Australia are the defending World Cup champions, having beaten England in the final of the previous tournament in New Zealand, delayed until 2022 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. One potential problem with the logistical switch could be the weather, with October one of the wetter months of the year in Sri Lanka. India and Pakistan were not playing each other outside of major tournaments even before the conflict between the two nations last month. The cricketing tension between the two countries escalated over the Champions Trophy. Even though Pakistan travelled to India for the men's 50-over World Cup in 2023, India did not make a reciprocal journey earlier this year. As part of the ICC arrangements, India played their matches in Dubai, going on to win the trophy after playing every fixture at the same venue. In May, amid cross-border military strikes between the two nations, both the Indian Premier League and Pakistan Super League were suspended before resuming. The delayed IPL final will be played on Tuesday. It remains to be seen whether the government of either country will allow their team to take part in a fixture against the other. It has also been announced the opening game of next year's Women's T20 World Cup in England will be played at Edgbaston on 12 June. The semi-finals have been confirmed for The Oval. The final will take place at Lord's on 5 July 2026.

Qatar's unprecedented transformation aresult of its vision: Ex-Pakistani diplomat

Syed Ishtiaq Hussain Andrabi, former Ambassador of Pakistan to Norway and Chile, has described Qatar's remarkable transformation over the past four decades as an unprecedented achievement, reflecting its modern vision and progress. Andrabi, who served at the Pakistani mission in Doha from 1985 to 1989, initially as a third secretary and later as a second secretary, visited Qatar briefly on his way to Toronto, where he reunited with his old friends. Andrabi, who served in various capacities in Egypt, the UK, Lebanon, the US, Brazil, Sri Lanka, and Argentina, was astonished by the rapid development in Qatar, attributing its progress to the nation's visionary leadership. During his stay in Doha, en route to Canada, where his son lives, he visited the iconic Pak Shamaa School, the oldest community educational institution, established in 1958. Upon his arrival at the school, he received a warm welcome from MA Shahid, President of the School Management Committee; Nabila Kaukab, Principal; Muhammad Abrar Hussain, Member of the Board of Governors, and faculty members. I have always found the Pakistani community to be hardworking, united, and willing to support one another. During my current visit, cherished memories have been rekindled once again,' remarked Andrabi. Earthquake sparks mass escape from Pakistan prison

More than 200 inmates have escaped from a prison in Pakistan after they were moved from their cells for safety amid earthquake tremors, officials have said. Several dozen of the prisoners that broke out of the jail in Karachi were quickly recaptured, police said on Tuesday, but at least 130 are understood to remain unaccounted for. Authorities added that raids are under way to apprehend those still at large. Of the 216 prisoners who had fled from Malir prison during the night, 78 had been recaptured, Kashif Abbasi, a senior police official, told the AP news agency. He stressed that none of the escaped prisoners were convicted fighters. Escapes are not common from Pakistani jails, which have stepped up security measures since an attack on a prison by the Pakistani Taliban in the town of Dera Ismail Khan, which freed hundreds of inmates. One prisoner was killed and three security officials were wounded in a shootout that developed amid a bid to put one of the escapees back into custody. Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, home minister for Sindh province, said the jailbreak happened while prisoners were removed from their cells for safety during the tremors. Once outside their cells, a group of inmates attacked guards, seized their weapons and opened fire. In comments carried live on local TV news channels, Lanjar said the prison break was one of the largest ever in Pakistan, the Reuters news agency reported.
