‘S.W.A.T.' Canceled (Again) By CBS After 8 Seasons; Showrunner Calls News 'Heartbreaking'
S.W.A.T. has ran out of lives. CBS has canceled the police drama starring Shemar Moore, now in its eighth season.
If you are having a case of deja vu, that is because, after a string of early renewals, S.W.A.T. was dramatically canceled in May 2023 after six seasons only for CBS to reverse the decision days later with a pickup of what was announced at the time as a seventh and final season. Flash-forward to May 2024 when S.W.A.T. was surprisingly renewed for an eighth season.

Don't expect another miraculous reprieve; this time the decision is believed to be final — and permanent. The last two years, S.W.A.T. lead studio Sony Pictures Television was able to propose financial terms that were appealing to CBS, sealing 11th hour pickups. This time, I hear CBS did not engage in renewal talks, opting instead to outright end the series.
This is the third high-profile drama cancellation at the network this week, following the axing of FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International. All three come from outside studios, Sony TV and Universal Television.
Drama cancellations were inevitable this year as CBS already has two drama slots reserved on next season's schedule for new series Sheriff Country, a spinoff from Fire Country, and Boston Blue, an extension of the Blue Bloods universe. It also has potential FBI and Equalizer spinoffs in the works and drama pilot Einstein starring Matthew Gray Gubler.
A mass renewal last month left the FBI spinoffs, S.W.A.T. and Equalizer on the bubble. Of the four, only Equalizer, from Universal TV, is still standing, with talks for a sixth and potentially final season season. (Midseason entry Watson, from CBS Studios, is still in its first weeks on the air but is looking promising for renewal.)
As Deadline reported at the time of the renewal, given its history, S.W.A.T. was an obvious candidate for cancellation as it is lower rated than the other dramas on the bubble this year — including the FBI spinoffs. But it has still been a sturdy performer tasked with the thankless job of keeping the lights on Friday.
'It's heartbreaking news, primarily because it's been such an immense pleasure working with this cast and crew to put out a show that we've always been proud of,' S.W.A.T. executive producer/showrunner Andrew Dettmann said. 'They are truly an extraordinary group of people who have all worked so hard and have been so dedicated for all these eight seasons, overcoming countless challenges. I can't give them enough credit. I feel so privileged to have been a part of the S.W.A.T. family.'
S.W.A.T. is a rare broadcast drama filming in Los Angeles. Following the cancellation, executive producer and former showrunner Shawn Ryan spoke of the series' crew that will now be out of work.
'It's been an extraordinary privilege to work on S.W.A.T. for eight seasons and tell the stories of Hondo and 20-Squad,' he said. 'I thank our fans, Shemar Moore, the rest of our cast, our producers, Sony Pictures Television, CBS Studios and CBS for the opportunity. Most of all I want to thank our tireless, dedicated crew who made our writers, directors and cast always look good. My greatest concern right now is for them.'
Speaking with Deadline in January, Ryan shared concerns over the fate of S.W.A.T. in light of the pending ownership change at CBS.
'The show I think is beloved in the executive ranks at CBS, the show is beloved by our audience,' he said at the rime. 'But we also understand that a corporate change is happening in that world. I don't know what the plans are. I don't know what the criteria for renewal is going to be. It seems like it could be much different than years past.'
He referred to the pending acquisition of CBS parent Paramount Global by Skydance, which is slated to close in the first half of the year.

‘Love Island' UK vs USA: The Biggest Differences Between the Shows
The reality TV gods have truly blessed us, as right now, not one, but two series of Love Island are currently airing, and honestly what a summer we have ahead of us. Earlier this week the 12th series of Love Island UK landed on ITV2 and last week Love Island USA began its seventh season on Peacock. Much of the show remains the same on both sides of the pond—a group of eligible singles are on the lookout for love spending eight weeks in a villa, where they have a summer of cracking on, "got a text" and deep meaningful chats around the firepit. However, there are some pretty major noticeable differences between both iconic shows. Curious to know more? These are the biggest difference's between Love Island UK and Love Island USA. UK Love Island UK is of course hosted by the icon that is Maya Jama. The TV presenter has been working on the show since series nine in 2023, after taking over from Laura Whitmore. She also hosts the show's spin-off Sunday night episode Aftersun. USA Meanwhile in the USA, former Vanderpump Rules cast member Ariana Madix presents the show. Ariana joined last season, following former host Sarah Hyland's exit from the show. While the hosts may be different, Iain Stirling does in fact do the voiceovers for both series. UK Since the show's inception 10 years ago with series one in 2015, Love Island has always been filmed on the Spanish island of Mallorca. In the first few series it was shot in Santanyi, however since 2017 it's been filmed in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar. The winter version of the series takes place in South Africa. USA Love Island USA has filmed in a variety of locations since it began. When the show was out on CBS the first season was filmed in Fiji, however it was moved to Las Vegas for season two due to the pandemic. The third season then took place in Hawaii. The show was then moved to be shown on Peacock and as part of this for the show's first season on the new network the series was filmed in California. And for the last three seasons, including the one currently airing, Love Island USA is filmed in Fiji. UK This season Love Island returns to its Mallorcan Villa, which is traditionally available as a holiday let, but is taken over by ITV every summer to create the legendary villa. In the villa there's one bedroom and one bathroom for all the Islanders. As well as the hideaway, outdoor kitchen and firepit. USA Like most things in the States, the Love Island USA villa is much bigger than the UK version. Unlike the UK one however, this villa is a set designed entirely for the show, rather than using an existing structure. They also have the addition of a 'speakeasy'. Unlike in the UK where the beds face each other, in the US all the beds are in a long line in the bedroom. UK Over the years there's been a lot of challenges in the UK version of the series, from the Twitter challenge, to the baby challenge and of course all those gross food tasks. Thankfully the food tasks are now gone and generally the producers have cut back on the game element of the series. Now, the biggest challenges are the "snog, marry, pie" and the snogging line up challenge. USA In the USA, the series does a variety of challenges and while they keep some the same such as "snog, marry, pie" there's still a lot of different ones. Earlier this season they did a blind-folded test with the new bombshells and last year they continued the tradition of doing the food challenges they've axed in the UK. UK Since the show began in 2015, Love Island UK has always given away a prize fund of £50,000 to the couple who are crowned the season's winners. For many of the seasons the winning couple would then be asked if they wanted to split or steal the money from their partner, however this part of the show has since been axed. USA Over on the other side of the pond, the winning couple walks away with a joint prize fund of $100,000.

Gavin Newsom is having his social media moment
'Fuck around' and 'find out,' read a TikTok post, following a screenshot announcing that California is suing President Donald Trump for deploying the National Guard to the streets of Los Angeles. But the TikTok wasn't shared by a typical meme account—it came from California Governor Gavin Newsom. 'I damn near fell over when I realized this was Gov. Newsom's page,' one user commented. Since Friday, demonstrations have erupted across Los Angeles in protest of the president's immigration policies and the ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids. Although many of the demonstrations have remained peaceful, there have been violent incidents including authorities deploying tear gas and rubber bullets, and protestors setting Waymo vehicles ablaze throughout the city. As tensions escalated, the Trump administration deployed the National Guard and Marines—despite objections from local officials—sparking a lawsuit from the state, threats of arrest against Governor Newsom, and a surge of defiant memes. 'And remember kids, the next time anybody tells you 'the government wouldn't do that', oh yes they would,' says the popular TikTok sound used on Newsom's official account video, playing over screenshots of news headlines and images of armed forces confronting demonstrators. In another viral video from the governor's page, which amassed over 5.4 million views, Taylor Swift's 'You Need To Calm Down' plays over a series of photos of the two politicians. 'r u ok?' the post asks, with a caption reading: 'America's keyboard warrior.' Newsom's clapback drew widespread praise in the comments. 'I do disagree with Newsom a lot but him standing up to tyranny and standing with your state takes some serious guts. Hats off to you Newsom,' wrote one user. He's also taken to his personal account to deliver meme-laced messages to Trump—one featuring a photoshopped image of the president wearing a crown, captioned 'send in the troops.' The slideshow ends with a shot from the musical Hamilton, with text reading: 'Democracy is under assault right before our eyes. It's time for all of us to stand up.' The online showdown has significantly boosted Newsom's social media presence, growing his personal TikTok account by approximately 397,000 followers and his official Governor account by 479,000 since Friday. Newsom is the latest in a growing number of politicians leveraging memes and social media to bypass traditional media and speak directly to the public through humor. Famously, Kamala Harris gained momentum during her presidential campaign with ' Brat summer ' and the coconut tree trend, while Joe Biden leaned into the viral ' Dark Brandon ' meme during his reelection campaign. Angelina Jolie's son Pax looked worse for wear during a recent night out with friends in L.A. On May 31, the 21-year-old was photographed being propped up by his pals as the rowdy crew made their way from celebrity hotspot Chateau Marmont to a strip club on Hollywood's notorious Sunset Strip, where they partied until the wee hours. At one point, Pax looked as if he could barely stand as he clung to two members of his group, wavering on a street corner. The Oscar winner's middle son is getting a rep for reckless behavior. At least twice he's crashed his e-bike while speeding along L.A.'s busy streets — without a helmet — needing to be hospitalized after a collision last July. (An insider tells Star, 'a lot of people have told him it's lunacy, that he must have some type of death wish to be so negligent.') For Angelina, it's a conundrum. 'Like any parent, she worries that Pax will fall into the wrong crowd or drink too much,' says the source. Yet the 50-year-old, a former wild child herself, has always prided herself on being a supportive but hands-off mother to Pax and his five siblings (she and ex-husband Brad Pitt share Maddox, 23, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, and 16-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox). Now the source says Brad fears his ex is losing control of their big brood — revealing another bone of contention in their bitter split. 'He's insisting Angelina get a better grip,' says the source. 'But she isn't going to listen to him and his concerns.' Angelina doesn't feel like she has much of a leg to stand on when it comes to reining the kids in — she was no stranger to trouble as a young adult. In a November 2011 interview with 60 Minutes, Angelina opened up about going through 'heavy, darker times' in her life. 'Angelina used to restrict Pax when he was younger but now that he's 21, there's not much she can do,' says the source. 'Besides, she did plenty worse than he did when she was his age, so she's wary of coming across like a hypocrite.' She also brought up the children to be free spirits. News' Daily Pop that she was scared of parent-teacher conferences. 'I have a problem with schools because I was always in trouble in school,' she admitted. 'I have PTSD.' When it comes to Pax, there's not much Brad can do. Adopted from Vietnam, Pax spent his early years in an orphanage before Brad and Angelina brought him home in 2007. Among all of the kids, he's been the most vocal about siding with his mom in the couple's nasty, years-long divorce and custody battle. (The family unraveled after a 2016 incident on a private plane. Angelina accused a drunken Brad of attacking her; now sober, Brad has denied all allegations.) In 2020, he reportedly slammed Brad in a since-deleted Instagram post, calling him 'world class a**hole.' The source says the 61-year-old 'still loves him dearly' and believes the children 'have been given way too much freedom way too soon,' by their mom. (Until age 18, he still has legal access to the twins.) In another blow to the F1 actor, Shiloh, one of several of the kids who have dropped 'Pitt' from their name, has further altered her moniker. The teen debuted her new name, 'Shi Joli,' in a press release about a dance she choreographed for an Isabel Marant/Net-A-Porter fashion show May 29. According to the source, Shiloh 'is still trying to find herself. Growing up in the spotlight was tough on her and she found her parents' divorce traumatic.' Angelina is taking a backseat approach for now and hoping the kids find their way eventually. Zahara is off at Spelman College ('she's very keen to spread her wings and travel,' says the source) while Maddox (who Angelina described as 'smart … but also wild' in 2019) lives in Angelina's Manhattan apartment (she said in March all the children use it as a 'crash pad'). 'Angelina is happy for them all to try new things and thinks it's healthy for them to experiment. She has zero doubt they'll go on to achieve great things in their lives.'
