Punggol cat death: NParks says no evidence of deliberate act of cruelty, injuries likely from traffic accident
SINGAPORE: There is no clear evidence that the injured community cat in Punggol, which later died, was a victim of a deliberate act of animal cruelty, said the National Parks Board (NParks) on Saturday (May 17).
The update comes days after it said it was investigating the case as one of suspected animal cruelty.
The cat had been found injured at the loading and unloading bay near Block 326B Sumang Walk in Punggol.
NParks had retrieved the injured cat after receiving feedback on the morning of May 12 and sent it to a private veterinary clinic for immediate care, said Ms Jessica Kwok, the statutory board's group director of enforcement and investigation, in a statement to the media.
"Based on the investigations and observations from the vet report, we did not find any overt evidence that the injuries were sustained due to a deliberate act of cruelty.
"The vet report from the private vet clinic stated that the cat's injuries are suggestive of blunt force trauma to the head, and that a road traffic accident is a possible common cause of such injuries."
NParks had also informed the community cat's caregiver, after tracing its microchip, to contact the clinic to follow up.
"We understand that due to its injuries, the cat was subsequently euthanised on welfare grounds at the clinic, and cremated," said Ms Kwok.
In investigating the case, NParks interviewed the person who first found the cat and reviewed available CCTV footage both in the vicinity of the car park and the bay where the cat was found.
"Based on the investigation findings, it is likely that the cat had sustained its injuries due to a vehicular accident," said Ms Kwok, adding that NParks has concluded investigations into the case.
CAT ABUSE CASE IN YISHUN
This was the second purported case of cat abuse in a week that NParks has been investigating, after another feline was found dead at Yishun Street 51 with signs of torture.
Addressing that case, Ms Kwok said that investigations were still ongoing. "We urge the public not to further speculate on the details of the ongoing case and to verify their information sources. These are crucial in allowing for a fair round of investigation to be carried out.

Police vehicle involved in accident with cyclist along Keppel Road, officer assisting with investigations
SINGAPORE: Police investigations are ongoing after an accident involving a police vehicle and a cyclist along Keppel Road towards Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) at around 3.10pm on Friday (Jun 6). Preliminary investigations found that the driver of the vehicle, a regular police officer from the Special Operations Command (SOC), allegedly left the scene after colliding with the cyclist, they said on Saturday, adding that the 30-year-old man is assisting with investigations. The cyclist, a 41-year-old man, was taken conscious to the hospital. Police said the driver was not aware of the collision until the Traffic Police contacted the SOC. The officer returned to the scene immediately to assist with investigations upon being informed, they added. "The officer is assisting with investigations for driving without due consideration of other road users and for causing hurt," said the police.

Violent dispute between stepfather and stepson erupts in Yishun rental flat; both arrested
SINGAPORE: An argument between a stepfather and his stepson escalated into a physical altercation at a rental flat in Yishun on Saturday morning, resulting in both men being arrested. The incident occurred around 10am at Block 510A Yishun Street 51. Eyewitnesses told Shin Min Daily News that police officers were seen arriving at the scene shortly after the commotion broke out. Residents familiar with the family said arguments were not uncommon in the unit, which is reportedly shared by a couple and a man in his 30s, believed to be the woman's son. 'They often argue,' one neighbour shared, 'That day, it turned into a fight. The younger man had a head injury, and the fight even spilled into the corridor.' Photos taken after the altercation showed the aftermath outside the flat — a broken shoe rack lay overturned, with footwear scattered across the corridor floor. When reporters visited the flat later, the unit appeared unoccupied. In response to media queries, the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed that a 35-year-old man had been taken conscious to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. A 57-year-old man sustained minor injuries but declined medical assistance. Both men were arrested for affray. Police investigations are ongoing.
