Apple iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air To Have 1 Serious Let-Down, Report Says
Apple's 2025 crop of iPhones will have many innovations, it seems, but one element, the display on two of the iPhones, won't be the ProMotion screen many users have been hoping for. Apple iPhone 16 — the display technology looks like it's changing for the iPhone 17, but how, ... More exactly? That's the news from a leaker called Fixed Focus Digital, whose Weibo predictions have included some strong hits and a few misses — so they may yet be proved wrong. Since 2021, Apple's Pro iPhone models have included what's called a ProMotion display, that is, a screen with a much faster refresh rate than the regular iPhone: 120Hz instead of 60Hz. This faster refresh means the screen looks smoother when you're scrolling fast down a menu, for instance. Several reports have claimed that the next iPhone 17 and the slim phone thought to be called the iPhone 17 Air could finally transition to ProMotion displays. And a recent report on screen sizes seemed to suggest this could be the case. However, the latest Weibo post flatly contradicts this. Talking about the iPhone 17 series display refresh rate, 'just a normal 120hz screen, but not ProMotion adaptive refresh rate,' they said. Well, a bump up to 120Hz would give that smooth scrolling effect, so this is still definitely a step forward. However, ProMotion has a dynamic refresh rate, meaning the iPhone's battery life can be preserved when there's static content on the display, for instance, and the refresh rate is dialed right down to 1Hz. It's this capability which also enables the always-on display that's such a crowd-pleaser on the iPhone 16 Pro and other Pro models, for instance. ProMotion is also what enables StandBy, where an iPhone being charged in horizontal orientation can show a clock, for instance, overnight. Without ProMotion, even with a 120Hz display, that clock would only show for a few seconds rather than all night long. So, where does that leave us? Cautiously optimistic, I'd say, because other analysts, including the well-regarded Ross Young from of Display Supply Chain Consultants, have previously predicted that ProMotion would come to every iPhone 17 handset. Fixed Focus Digital doesn't have a perfect track record, so there's room to hope.

Nvidia tops Microsoft, regains most valuable company title for first time since January
Nvidia passed Microsoft in market cap on Tuesday, once again becoming the most valuable publicly traded company in the world. Shares of the artificial intelligence chipmaker rose about 3% on Tuesday to $141.40, and the stock has surged nearly 24% in the past month as Nvidia's growth has persisted even through export control and tariff concerns. The company now has a $3.45 trillion market cap. Microsoft closed Tuesday with a $3.44 trillion market cap. Nvidia has been trading places with Apple and Microsoft at the top of the market cap ranks since last June. The last time Nvidia was the most-valuable company was on Jan. 24. Last week, Nvidia reported 96 cents in adjusted earnings per share on $44.06 billion in sales in its fiscal first quarter. That represented 69% growth from the year-ago period, an incredible growth rate for a company as large as Nvidia. Nvidia's growth has been fueled by its AI chips, which are used by companies like OpenAI to develop software like ChatGPT. Companies including Microsoft, Meta, Google, Amazon, Oracle, and xAI have been purchasing Nvidia's AI accelerators in massive quantities to build ever-larger clusters of computers for advanced AI work. Nvidia was founded in 1993 to produce chips for playing 3D games, but in recent years, it has taken off as scientists and researchers found that the same Nvidia chip designs that could render computer graphics were ideal for the kind of parallel processing needed for AI.

Nvidia on track to reclaim crown as world's most valuable company as $1 trillion rally continues
Nvidia (NVDA) was on pace to overtake Microsoft (MSFT) as the world's most valuable company Tuesday, with the AI chipmaker's market capitalization of $3.449 trillion eclipsing the software giant's $3.4443 trillion during late afternoon trading. Nvidia stock has gained roughly 50% since hitting a 12-month low of just over $94 in early April, adding more than $1 trillion to the company's market capitalization as investors pile back in to the so-called 'Magnificent Seven' Big Tech stocks. Nvidia shares have been powered higher over the past week after the company's better-than-expected quarterly financial results and outlook on May 28 showed the chipmaker's revenue continuing to grow despite losing billions in sales from lost revenue to China due to a recent US export ban. Nvidia's first quarter earnings report also showed the company has overcome supply chain hurdles to deliver its powerful, complex, Blackwell AI servers to Big Tech customers such as Microsoft. The stock rose as much as 3% Tuesday as Nvidia's contract chip manufacturer TSMC reaffirmed that AI chip demand remains robust and a major customer, CoreWeave (CRWV), secured a new data center lease (which, once online, would be filled with Nvidia's chips). Nvidia stock has had a volatile year, as investors questioned the sustainability of AI demand and Trump's trade war hammered shares. Microsoft had held the top spot as the world's most valuable company since early May, and the company has traded places atop the leaderboard back and forth this year with Apple (AAPL). Nvidia last held the distinction in January. Nvidia's recent gains have put the stock back in positive territory for the year, with the stock up roughly 5% year to date, while Microsoft has gained nearly 10% over that time frame. Meanwhile, Apple shares are down roughly 19% in 2025 as the company faces stiff AI competition and President Trump has threatened to tariff imports of its iPhones.
