[Graphic News] Sea temperatures around S. Korea rise nearly double global average
The average temperature of South Korea's surrounding seas has risen at nearly twice the global average rate over the past 56 years, according to a government report. The National Institute of Fisheries Science stated in its report, '2024 Impact of Climate Change in Fisheries Sector,' that sea temperatures around South Korea have increased by 1.44 degree Celsius between 1968 and 2023, compared to the global average rise of 0.7 C.
The East Sea experienced the most significant increase, with temperatures rising by 1.9 C, followed by the West Sea (1.27 C) and the South Sea (1.15 C). This temperature rise is altering the distribution of fish species in South Korean waters. For example, yellowtail, once commonly found mainly around Jeju Island, are now frequently caught in the southern East Sea.
The report also warns that surface temperatures in South Korea's waters could increase by an additional 1 C to 4 C by 2100, seriously impacting marine ecosystems and fisheries.

Lee Jae-myung names deputy national security, AI advisers
President Lee Jae-myung nominated three deputy national security advisers and a senior secretary for artificial intelligence ahead of his trip to Canada to attend the Group of Seven summit, his presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik said Sunday. Of the nominees filling three deputy national security adviser posts under National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac, two of them were career diplomats, according to Kang. Kim Hyun-jong was selected as Lee's first deputy director of the presidential National Security Office, who will be dedicated to national defense and security strategies. Lee is a retired three-star general of South Korea's Army who was formerly an aide to the chief of the Ground Operations Command. Lim Woong-soon, South Korea's ambassador to Canada, was picked as the second deputy director of the NSO to handle matters related to South Korea's foreign affairs, overseas Koreans and unification policy. Kang said Lim is in Canada for onsite preparations ahead of Lee's visit. Oh Hyun-joo, South Korean ambassador to the Holy See, was named the NSO's third deputy director to oversee economic security and cybersecurity. Lee also named Ha Jung-woo, head of internet giant Naver's Future AI Center, as the new senior presidential secretary tasked with AI and future technology planning. Ha's work will involve policy related to nationwide adoption of AI, science and technology, population planning and climate change. Kang's announcement leaves the senior presidential secretaries for civil affairs and civil and social agenda untapped, while filling most of the other posts as of Sunday. The civil affairs aide post is unoccupied as nominee Oh Kwang-soo stepped down last week amid growing controversies over his failed asset disclosures in his past mandatory filings as a senior prosecutor. According to the presidential office, more personnel nominations will be unveiled after Lee's return to Seoul next week.

Southwest Pacific hit by unprecedented marine heat waves in 2024, UN says
SINGAPORE (Reuters) -- Unprecedented heat waves in the Southwest Pacific affected more than 10 percent of the global ocean surface in 2024, damaging coral reefs and putting the region's last remaining tropical glacier at risk of extinction, the UN's weather body said on Thursday. Average 2024 temperatures in the region -- which covers Australia and New Zealand as well as southeast Asian island states like Indonesia and the Philippines -- were nearly half a degree Celsius higher than the 1991-2020 mean, the World Meteorological Organization said in an annual report. "Much of the region saw at least severe marine heat wave conditions at some point during the course of 2024, particularly in areas near and south of the equator," said the WMO's Blair Trewin, one of the report's authors. Extreme heat over the year affected 40 million square kilometers of ocean, and new temperature highs were set in the Philippines and Australia, the report said. Ocean surface temperatures also broke records, while total ocean heat content was the second-highest annual average, behind 2022. An unprecedented number of cyclones, which experts have attributed to climate change, also caused havoc in the Philippines in October and November. Sea levels continue to rise more quickly than the global average, an urgent problem in a region where more than half the population lives within 500 meters of the coast, the report added. The report also cited satellite data showing that the region's sole tropical glacier, located in Indonesia on the western part of the island of New Guinea, shrank by up to 50 percent last year. "Unfortunately, if this rate of loss continues, this glacier could be gone by 2026 or shortly thereafter," said the WMO's Thea Turkington, another of the report's authors.

GC Biopharma's Phase 3 Clinical Trial Results for Hunterase Published in SCIE-Indexed Journal
YONGIN, South Korea, May 30, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- GC Biopharma, a South Korean pharmaceutical company, announced that the Phase 3 clinical trial results for Hunterase (idursulfase beta), its investigational drug for Hunter Syndrome (MPS II), have been published in Genetics in Medicine, an SCIE-indexed journal. Conducted at Samsung Medical Center, the Phase 3 clinical trial enrolled 24 newly diagnosed Hunter Syndrome patients with no prior treatment. It evaluated the efficacy and safety of Hunterase over a one-year treatment period. Hunter Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder caused by a deficiency of iduronate-2-sulfatase (IDS), an enzyme critical for glycosaminoglycan (GAG) catabolism. This deficiency leads to the progressive accumulation of GAGs in various organs and tissues, resulting in multisystemic dysfunction, including joint stiffness and hepatosplenomegaly. The clinical trial results demonstrated that Hunterase significantly enhanced functional mobility, reduced urinary GAG concentrations, and markedly alleviated hepatosplenomegaly. In the 6-Minute Walk Test (6-MWT), the primary endpoint of the study, patients treated with Hunterase walked an average of 62.2 meters more after treatment. This improvement was more than eight times greater compared to the placebo group, which saw an average increase of just 7.3 meters. The 6-MWT measures the distance a patient can walk on a flat surface within 6 minutes. It is a widely used clinical measure for evaluating functional mobility, cardiopulmonary function, muscle strength, and overall physical health. In the context of Hunter syndrome, it serves as a standardized and meaningful indicator of disease progression and quality of life. In addition to the primary endpoint, the study also achieved positive outcomes in secondary endpoints, including changes in urinary total glycosaminoglycan (GAG) levels, as well as heparan sulfate (HS) and dermatan sulfate (DS) levels. The GAG levels decreased by 71%, while HS and DS levels decreased by 89% and 88%, respectively. Moreover, liver and spleen volumes were reduced by 27% and 26%, respectively, demonstrating the drug's effectiveness in addressing organ enlargement commonly associated with the disease. Hunterase also demonstrated a favorable safety profile. Most adverse events were mild or moderate, and no patients discontinued treatment due to side effects. Notably, only 19% of the patients had neutralizing antibodies detected three or more consecutive times, which is significantly lower than the 62.5% observed with the existing treatments. This suggests that Hunterase may offer a more sustained therapeutic effect compared to other currently available therapy. "This clinical trial is especially meaningful as it represents the first Phase 3 study in Asian patients to validate the clinical efficacy of Hunterase", said Professor Young Bae Sohn of Ajou University School of Medicine and Ajou University Hospital, the journal's first author.
