GRS to Bung: Don't play victim, we don't need you

KOTA KINABALU (June 3): Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) information chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has fired back at Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, calling his latest remarks arrogant and disconnected from Sabah's political reality.
'Bung is the last person who should talk about loyalty or sincerity. He tried to bring down the very government he was part of, just to serve his own ambition. That speaks volumes,' he said.
Joniston dismissed Bung's claim that GRS had betrayed Barisan Nasional (BN), describing it as a clear attempt to twist the narrative and deflect from his own actions.
'It's Bung who conspired with Warisan and PKDM in January 2023 to topple the government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
'He wasn't betrayed, he was the one doing the betraying. Even while sitting in the State Cabinet, he had no respect for his colleagues in the State government led by Hajiji as Chief Minister.'
Joniston stressed that GRS has never been reliant on Umno and is fully prepared to face the upcoming state election independently.
As such Bung should stop with his arrogance by insinuating as if GRS is so hard up to work with Umno-BN.
He also pointed out that during the political crisis, several Umno assemblymen refused to support Bung's move and instead threw their backing behind Hajiji, alongside PH.
'If anyone needs to reflect, it's Bung. Why did even your own colleagues abandon your 'Langkah Kinabalu'? Why did PH support Hajiji, not you? The answer is obvious because the trust wasn't with you,' he said.
Joniston, who is also PBS information chief, reiterated that his party would never forget the insult hurled by Bung when he once labelled PBS as 'melukut di tepi gantang'.
'You showed no respect for PBS or your allies, and now you expect cooperation? Don't be surprised if Sabahans continue to reject Umno just like they did in other states across the Peninsula.
'Sabah isn't your political lifeline. Don't treat this state like your fallback plan,' he said, stressing that GRS is now focused on what matters – unity, stability and delivering for the people.

No, I'm living my best life, KJ says on joining Cabinet

Khairy Jamaluddin was sacked from Umno in January 2023 for breaching party discipline during the 15th general election. PETALING JAYA : Khairy Jamaluddin has dismissed speculation that he may join Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's Cabinet, saying he has no reason to leave his current lifestyle. Speaking to reporters after a product launch today, the former health minister said he was 'living his best life' now. 'Why would I want to leave this?' he said. Speculation on Khairy's possible appointment to the Cabinet arose following the resignations of Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad from their ministerial posts. The former Umno Youth chief said in February that he remained undecided on his next move, following calls for him to stay out of Umno for good or join PAS. In response to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reportedly saying that those who 'keluar sekejap (exit briefly)' from the party should stay out, he said it was 'an interesting suggestion'. Khairy and ex-information chief Shahril Hamdan started the 'Keluar Sekejap' podcast in 2023, discussing political, social and other contemporary issues. Khairy was sacked from Umno in January 2023 for breaching party discipline during the 15th general election. Shahril, meanwhile, was given a six-year suspension in August 2022.

Dr M in cycle of failed political experiments, says Umno man

Dr Mahathir Mohamad launched the 'Malay secretariat committee' yesterday with Perikatan Nasional leaders. PETALING JAYA : Dr Mahathir Mohamad's new platform to unite the Malays, in which he has invited Umno members to join, is nothing more than part of a repeated cycle of failed political experiments, says an Umno leader. Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said the former prime minister has repeatedly failed to unite the Malays through other political platforms in the past, including Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA). 'Malay politics cannot be built on nostalgic rhetoric and repeated attempts to form new, loosely structured coalitions without a clear struggle or foundation. 'What we need today is not another splinter group but a determination to strengthen the existing political institutions that have proven their service to the Malays and nation,' Shaiful told FMT. GTA, which at the time also comprised Mahathir's former party Pejuang, saw all of its candidates losing their deposits in the 2022 general election (GE15). This included the former prime minister. The loose coalition of political parties, NGOs and professionals was established ahead of GE15 but folded a year later after Mahathir, its founding chairman, admitted that the movement was no longer functioning. Prior to that, Mahathir had founded Pejuang with other former Bersatu leaders but left the party in February 2023. Yesterday, Mahathir invited Umno members to join his 'Malay secretariat committee', formed in hopes of uniting the Malays and 'restoring Malay power' in government. He said the coalition, which includes PAS and Bersatu, is not a formal political party for now, but a broad umbrella to safeguard the political and economic future of the Malays. Commenting on this, former law minister Zaid Ibrahim said such a movement should be led by a new group of leaders under the age of 50, with proven success in their respective fields, whether politics, business, academia, civil society or entrepreneurship. However, Shaiful rubbished Zaid's proposal, saying it gave the impression that the Malays had no choice but to continue being subjects of failed political experiments. He added that Zaid's proposed 'leadership cohort' would get zero trust from Malays on the ground or consistent political loyalty. 'The Malays are not forgetful. They still remember his political history that was constantly changing directions and often rejected the fundamentals of the Malay struggle,' he said.

GRS supreme council to hold meeting on potential partners, strategic goals for Sabah election

TUARAN, June 5 — Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Supreme Council will convene a meeting soon to determine the coalition's strategic direction, including decisions on potential partners for the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election. GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the meeting is expected to take place most likely after Aidiladha celebrations. 'The meeting will cover many critical issues as the state election is approaching. We will discuss not only who our partners will be but also the distribution of seats, candidate selection to ensure winnability, campaign strategies, and efforts to strengthen party machinery across all constituencies.' Hajiji said this to reporters after presenting sacrificial cattle donations at the Rumpun Bajau Samah Cultural Centre in Kampung Lok Batik today. The remarks came in response to Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin's statement on Tuesday that Sabah Umno will only consider cooperation with GRS after the state election. Commenting further, the Sabah Chief Minister said Bung Moktar's statement was merely Umno Sabah's stance. 'We in GRS have not made any decisions yet. We will discuss and decide our election strategy, including which parties will be our partners, during the upcoming Supreme Council meeting,' he added. — Bernama
