Company manager loses over RM1.7m in share investment scam
JOHOR BAHRU: A 67-year-old man lost more than RM1.7 million after falling victim to a share investment scam via WhatsApp.
Johor police chief CP Datuk M Kumar said the victim, a private company manager, lodged a report on June 12 claiming that his phone number had been added to a WhatsApp group named 'C-10 Freeman Saham 17' in April.
'The victim was promised daily returns of five to 10 percent based on market share prices and his investment amount. Enticed by the offer, he made 12 fund transfers between April 16 and May 30 to five different bank accounts, totalling RM1,772,603,' he said in a statement last night.
However, after making the payments, the victim did not receive the promised returns. Instead, he was asked to pay an additional RM500,000, which raised suspicions and led him to believe he had been scammed.
'To date, the promised returns have not been received, resulting in a total loss of RM1,772,603,' he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between one and ten years, caning, and a possible fine upon conviction.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and not be easily swayed by investment offers on social media that promise quick and high returns with minimal effort.
'The public is also advised to verify such offers with relevant authorities such as the Royal Malaysia Police, Bank Negara Malaysia, and the Securities Commission to ensure their legitimacy.
'In addition, use the Semak Mule service to check the status of bank accounts and phone numbers before proceeding with any payments,' he added.
He also called on the public to stay informed about current commercial crime trends to avoid falling prey to scams.

Online 'store rating' scam costs businessman over RM700k

Two held over false claims involving school projects in Perlis
KANGAR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained two men in connection with an investigation into false claims involving more than RM2 million in 2022. According to a source, the duo, aged 43 and 50, were arrested between 4 pm and 4.10 pm today when they turned up to give their statements at the Perlis MACC office here. The two individuals are believed to have used five construction companies to undertake maintenance, upgrading and repair works at five secondary schools in Perlis, involving an allocation of RM2.459 million. The source said the men were released on MACC bail of RM10,000 with one surety at 9.30 pm tonight. The two individuals were previously arrested by the Selangor MACC in 2023 and charged at the Kuala Lumpur Court under Section 420 of the Penal Code in connection with the same project in Selangor. Meanwhile, Perlis MACC director Mohd Nor Adha Ab Gani confirmed the arrest and said the case was being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.

Man arrested, fireworks worth over RM8mil seized
SEBERANG PRAI: A man was arrested and fireworks worth over RM8 million were seized and a man arrested during a General Operations Force (GOF) raid at a warehouse in Seberang Prai Tengah. The operation, led by its Bukit Kayu Hitam unit, uncovered 9,053 boxes of assorted fireworks stored in an unlicensed and unsafe facility. GOF northern brigade commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Shahrum Hashim said the fireworks, valued at RM8,158,714, were brought from Port Klang and meant for distribution across the northern states. "The warehouse was found to be operating without valid permits, and the storage conditions were deemed unsafe," he said in a statement. The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, which allows fines between RM100,000 and RM500,000, up to five years' jail, or both. t is also being probed under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957, which provides for up to seven years' imprisonment, a RM10,000 fine, or both. "We will continue to monitor and patrol key areas in Perak, Penang, and Kedah to combat illegal activities. "We are committed and consistent in ensuring our enforcement actions remain strict and uncompromising," he added. The public is urged to report any suspicious or unlawful activity.
