New Details on Bond 26: Denis Villeneuve to Direct with Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi Among Frontrunners
After years of speculation, Amazon MGM has officially confirmed that Denis Villeneuve will direct the 26th James Bond film—making this the first 007 installment under a new studio's leadership. The Dune director has stepped into one of cinema's most iconic roles behind the camera.
Villeneuve has also promised both reverence for the franchise and a new trajectory for the series. With an estimated 2028 release, the film remains in early development, but the studio is already narrowing down possible leads and writers.

Denis Villeneuve, whose filmography includes Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, and Sicario, called Bond 'sacred territory' in a statement, acknowledging his lifelong admiration for the spy series. He joins the project as executive producer alongside Tanya Lapointe, but does not hold final cut or a multi-film deal.
The upcoming movie signals a major shift in the Bond franchise—formerly tightly controlled by the Broccoli family, who relinquished creative rights to Amazon earlier this year after six decades of stewardship.
With Dune: Messiah already in pre-production, Villeneuve's Bond version will not enter full-scale production for at least two years. Still, sources tell Variety that the studio is accelerating development by seeking a screenwriter and finalizing casting preferences.
Casting focus: Will there be a younger James Bond?
Reportedly, Amazon MGM is targeting actors under 30 for the next James Bond. Early favorites include Jacob Elordi, known for Euphoria and Saltburn; Tom Holland, star of Spider-Man and Uncharted; and Harris Dickinson, who appeared in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Babygirl.
While no official talks have begun, the studio appears intent on rejuvenating Bond with a new generation. Older fan picks like Henry Cavill and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are reportedly out of contention due to age.
Jonathan Nolan was considered to write the script, per insiders, but his current commitments to other Amazon projects likely rule him out. A shortlist of other writers is under review as the studio shapes what could be a very different kind of Bond film.

According to Variety, the jury of the limited series competition, headed by director/screenwriter Bille August, voted for Ukrainian war drama 'The Train' as best limited series. While the best director award for International Limited Series went to Lucy Gaffy for 'Mix Tape,' a co-production between Australia, Canada and Ireland. In the same category, the acting awards went to Laure Calamy for France's 'The Confidante' and Matthew Gurney for the U.K.'s 'Reunion.' The special jury prize was handed to 'Kabul' written by Olivier Demangel, Thomas Finkelkraut and Joey Lavy. The Boys actor Jensen Ackles is open to playing Batman in the DC Universe. James Gunn is searching for the next Dark Knight, while Robert Pattinson's Batman remains separate. Jensen Ackles is open to the idea of playing Batman. DC head James Gunn is currently looking for the next actor to portray the Dark Knight in the DC Universe (DCU) and The Boys star, 47, has now said he would want to play Batman, but knows it would be 'hard to carve out something truly unique" if he were to take on the role. When Collider asked Ackles if he would be open to playing Batman, he said: 'Oh, man. I don't know. It would be hard to carve out something truly unique amongst all of the performances as Batman. I would probably have to lean heavily on Gunn and whoever's directing and whoever's writing it, and get inspiration from the text." The Countdown actor added the pressure of playing the iconic superhero would weigh heavily on him, but would still consider portraying the Caped Crusader. He said, 'You talk about not wanting to fumble the football — that's one that I would be nervous as hell to carry. But also proud. A certain feather in the cap. Anybody who gets to wear the cowl, they got something." When Collider said they'd keep their fingers crossed for him to play Batman, Ackles replied: 'I'll cross 'em, too. Just say the word!" Batman is set to get his grand introduction in the DCU with The Brave and the Bold, though no actor is attached to the role yet. The idea of folding Pattinson's Caped Crusader into the DCU and playing the character in The Brave and the Bold had been floated, but Gunn has since extinguished this theory. During an interview with Variety, he said, 'I wouldn't rule anything out. He could show up in something else. But the actor doesn't exist [yet]." The Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker added that he and co-DC head Peter Safran haven't had any 'serious conversations" about bringing Pattinson's Batman over to the DCU. He said, 'Have we ever talked about Robert Pattinson? Yeah. We've talked about all those things. But serious conversations? No." The Brave and the Bold is expected to focus on the father-son dynamic between Batman and his accomplice Robin and will be helmed by The Flash director Andy Muschietti. While Gunn seems uncertain about Pattison's DCU future, The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves hasn't ruled out the possibility his Caped Crusader could transition over to the mainline DCU. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he said, 'It really comes down to whether it makes sense. There was a story I wanted to tell. The epic crime saga. It's been important to me to play that out and James and Peter have been really great about that. They are letting us do that. What the future brings, I can't really tell you. I have no idea."
