Maruti Suzuki Dzire to Honda Amaze: Sedans under ₹5 lakh offering best value for money
When it comes to buying cars, no matter if it is a new or a used one, multiple factors come into play. These include the fuel type, body style, engine, transmission type, cost of maintenance, after-sales service availability, etc. Combined, all these factors ensure the value for money quotient of a car.
Keeping pace with the trend of rising demand for SUVs and crossovers, consumer preference for hatchbacks and sedans has dropped significantly in the new car market as well as in the pre-owned segment. However, despite the slumping demand, sedans still enjoy a niche following. The sub-compact sedans, which are positioned at the lower level of the sedan segment, usually see the most demand owing to their affordability and practicality.

The current generation Maruti Suzuki Dzire comes with a significantly overhauled design compared to the previous generation. It comes with a host of upmarket features as well. Priced between ₹6.84 lakh and ₹10.19 lakh (ex-showroom), the Maruti Suzuki Dzire gets a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, which is available with transmission choices like a five-speed manual gearbox and an AMT. There is a petrol-CNG bi-fuel powertrain on offer as well, which gets a five-speed manual gearbox for transmission duty. Some of the key features onboard the Dzire include an electric sunroof, cruise control, wireless phone charger, 360-degree surround view camera, TPMS, auto-fold ORVMs, six airbags as standard, etc. Interestingly, the new Dzire became the first car from the brand to receive a five-star Global NCAP crash test rating.
Following the new Dzire, the Honda Amaze, its closest competitor, too, received an update. With this, the Honda Amaze sub-compact has become more upmarket in terms of design and features on offer. However, unlike the Dzire, the new Amaze didn't receive any update on the powertrain front. Priced between ₹8.10 lakh and ₹11.20 lakh (ex-showroom), the new Honda Amaze gets a 1.2-litre petrol engine, which is available with transmission choices like a manual gearbox and a CVT. There is a CNG kit on offer as well, which can be retrofitted to the sedan.

Honda Cars India sees May sales slowdown, eyes recovery with improved market conditions
The 2024 Honda Amaze is priced between ₹8.10 lakh and ₹11.20 lakh Check Offers Honda Cars India Ltd. has announced that it sold 5,985 vehicles in May 2025, including 3,950 in the domestic market and 2,035 in international markets. The figures reflect a cautious posture for Honda in the current market environment with regard to supply and distribution. It's worth noting in May that Honda's sales figures for May 2025 are weak compared to the same time last year. In May 2024, Honda Cars India sold 4,822 cars in the domestic market and 6,521 vehicles in the international market, which means Honda's year-over-year declines in both markets. The automaker faces challenges related to a number of economic headwinds and a depressed consumer confidence. The carmaker said that it implemented a cautious dispatch strategy in May. By controlling the number of vehicles shipped to the dealerships, Honda Cars India was able to control dealer inventories and prevent oversupply in a very uncertain sales environment. Also Read : Honda Amaze: The sedan that refuses to shout, but quietly delivers Kunal Behl, Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Honda Cars India Ltd., addressed the company's approach: 'Given the prevailing market sentiment, we deliberately maintained a conservative dispatch volume to manage inventories efficiently across our dealer network. At the same time, we remain hopeful that an improved monsoon season will stimulate retail demand in the coming months." Despite the current slowdown, Honda Cars India is optimistic about the future. Given the forecasts for a better-than-usual monsoon season—often a key driver of rural and semi-urban demand— the company anticipates retail momentum to build as conditions improve. The maker will likely also be preparing the new product updates and refreshed operating strategy to strengthen its presence in the competitive Indian car market. Honda's increasing focus towards hybrids During the month, Toshihiro Mibe, CEO, Honda Motor Company, stated that the company intends to cut back on investments in electrification and put its focus on hybrid vehicles in the immediate future followed by a desire to go electric long-term. He called the move "a course correction" rather than a shift in long-term vision. Also Read : Honda scales back EV goals, shifts focus to hybrids amid global EV slowdown He emphasized that Honda is still committed to electrification but is now delaying that transition to respond to current market realities. The new strategy means that Honda will be more aggressive in the hybrid area and will increase production in markets where EV sales have not been as strong. Maruti Suzuki Targeting 4 Lakh Exports In FY2026, Amidst May Sales Slowdown
Despite the slowdown in domestic sales, Maruti continues to boast good numbers in export. In fact, the company said that Japan, one of its newer export markets, is already generating good export numbers for Fronx and Jimny and is currently at number 2 for overall exports. Currently, Maruti is present in over 100 countries across the globe and the top-selling export models include Baleno, Dzire and Swift, in addition to the Fronx and Jimny. Maruti is targeting a growth of 20 per cent in overall exports for the current financial year. Domestic Sales Slowdown Maruti Suzuki's May 2025 domestic sales saw a drop of 5.6 per cent year and while that number may not be a stark drop, but it reveals quite a few underlying details. In a sales call with journalists, the top management of Maruti Suzuki revealed that the primary reason of the drop in sales was due to the slow uptake in the small cars segment. The sales of the likes of Alto, S-Presso etc. showed a drop to 6,776 units, compared to 9,902 units last year. Compact cars (Baleno, Swift, Dzire, etc.) also declined slightly to 61,502 units, down from 68,206 units. Top 3 selling overall models in May 2025 were the Dzire, Ertiga and Brezza. But what was also revealed that international border tension impacted the sales of Maruti Suzuki models, particularly the small cars, in the states which border Pakistan such as - Punjab, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir and so on. These states contribute to almost 9 per cent of total domestic sales. But the company is also confident that a strong monsoon will be beneficial for overall domestic sales in the coming months. With the launch of the e-Vitara on the anvil, Maruti Suzuki also hopes to reclaim its overall SUV leadership, baking on the predicted strong monsoon. Hybrid Theory Maruti Suzuki has one of the largest portfolio of hybrid cars in India and believes that in order for hybrids to sell, the government needs to do more in terms of offering concessions and subsidies on the purchase of new hybrid cars. The argument that MSIL makes is hybrid vehicles are less polluting than a pure petrol or diesel vehicle, hence a hybrid car and a pure ICE car cannot be treated the same. Moreover, the Commission for Air Quality Management is pushing for government vehicle fleet to use hybrid cars along with EVs. While this move plays strongly in favour of Maruti Suzuki, but OEMs like Mahindra and Tata have requested the Centre to focus on pure electric vehicles along with policies and incentives on the same and not on hybrids.

He expressed that the Indian passenger vehicle market will continue to witness muted growth unless the small car segment sees growth. Tax reduction to revive the segment In order to regain momentum in the small car space, Bhargava proposed the introduction of tax structures tailored specifically for smaller cars—lower taxes compared to other segments. Drawing a parallel with Japan's Kei cars, which benefit from lower taxes and regulations, he suggested India should adopt a similar approach. By making small cars more affordable and accessible, India could see a shift from motorcycles to four-wheelers, helping to accommodate the 30 crore two-wheeler owners in the country, the chairman emphasised.
