Fresh faces in Hallgrimsson's Ireland squad for summer matches

Irish Post23-05-2025

REPUBLIC of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has named four uncapped players in his squad for next month's international friendlies against Senegal and Luxembourg.
Reims midfielder John Joe Patrick Finn, Leyton Orient goalkeeper Josh Keeley, on-loan St Mirren midfielder Killian Phillips, and Shamrock Rovers defender Josh Honohan have all been included in the 24-man selection.

Veteran captain Seamus Coleman returns after missing the last seven games, while Leicester City winger Kasey McAteer, Ipswich Town forward Sammie Szmodics, and Strasbourg defender Andrew Omobamidele are also recalled.
Festy Ebosele, of Istanbul Basaksehir, rejoins the squad after sitting out March's Nations League play-off win over Bulgaria.
Ireland will host Senegal at Dublin's Aviva Stadium on June 6 before travelling to Luxembourg on June 10. The matches will prepare the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers starting in September against Hungary and Armenia. The new faces
Josh Honohan
The versatile 24-year-old defender, formerly of Cork City, joined Shamrock Rovers in 2023. He was a key part of Rovers' UEFA Conference League campaign and is the only League of Ireland player included this time. 'He gives us in-game flexibility as he's comfortable across the backline and even in wide midfield roles,' said Hallgrimsson. 'This is a chance to test him alongside players from higher divisions.'
John Joe Patrick Finn
Born in Madrid to a Galway father and with Mayo roots, 21-year-old Finn spent time in Real Madrid's academy before moving to Getafe at 15. He made his La Liga debut aged 17 and played for Ireland's Under-19s in 2021. In January 2025, he joined Reims and has since made a dozen Ligue 1 appearances.
Josh Keeley
The goalkeeper (21) started with St Patrick's Athletic before joining Tottenham Hotspur in 2022. After a loan spell at Barnet, he moved to Leyton Orient for the 2024-25 season, helping them reach the League One play-offs. He also grabbed headlines by scoring a dramatic injury-time equaliser in the FA Cup against Oldham. A regular for Ireland's Under-21s, Keeley is now poised for a senior debut.
Killian Phillips
The 23-year-old attacking midfielder was born in San Diego, California, but raised in Dublin. He moved from Drogheda United to Crystal Palace in 2022. Though first-team opportunities at Palace have been limited, he has been a regular for St Mirren in Scotland's Premiership this season, starting 33 games. Hallgrimsson praised Phillips' energy and physicality: 'He's a different type of midfielder and brings a lot of dynamism. We're keen to see how he adapts in a senior international environment.'

Cesc Fabregas says he believes in ‘long-term' Como project amid links to Inter

Cesc Fabregas appeared to commit his future to Como amidst reports linking him with Inter Milan, stating he believes in the 'long-term project' at last season's Serie A newcomers. The former Arsenal and Spain midfielder guided the team to an impressive 10th-place finish in their first top-flight campaign for 21 years helped by a club-record six-match winning run between April and May. A first season in senior management for the 38-year-old ended with his reputation as a head coach significantly raised, reportedly catching the eye of Inter who are without a manager after Simone Inzaghi departed this week in the aftermath of Saturday's 5-0 Champions League final loss to Paris St Germain. Cesc Fabregas played for Chelsea and Arsenal in the Premier League (John Walton/PA) 'I really believe in the Como project,' Fabregas said at the SXSW event taking place in London, as reported by La Gazzetta della Sport. 'I started with this club because I was thinking about a long-term project. I don't want to finish my career at a club where there's a project for one or two years and then everything ends.' Fabregas, who is a minority shareholder of the club, joined Como as a player in 2022 and played out the final year of his career with the club in Serie B. After retiring the following summer, he joined the coaching staff, briefly taking charge of the first team as caretaker after boss Moreno Longo was sacked. Welsh coach Osian Roberts took charge for the remainder of the promotion-winning season while Fabregas completed his UEFA coaching qualifications, with the World Cup and Champions League-winner taking over last summer. 'I really believe in Como's long-term project,' he said. 'I arrived here as a player and I'm very, very happy because I get to work in the way that I want. We have the same goals and the same ambition. 'The President allows me to work the way I want, the way I see things. Fortunately, we share the same vision and have the same goal, which is to go as far as possible. 'We've become a really good team together, in a small town, in a small club but with big, very big ambitions for the future.' Inter meanwhile have signed Croatia international Petar Sucic from Dinamo Zagreb. The midfielder, who has seven international caps, played last season on loan at Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar.

Robbie Brady wins FAI senior men's player of the year

ROBBIE BRADY HAS been crowned the senior men's international player of the year, as part of the FAI's 35th annual awards. Brady was shortlisted alongside Caoimhín Kelleher and Nathan Collins for the senior men's gong, and was presented with the award by Heimir Hallgrimsson at a team meeting ahead of Friday's international against Senegal. Brady missed all of Ireland's Euro 2024 qualification campaign through injury, but has returned to fitness and established himself as an integral player under Hallgrimsson, scoring the winning goal away to Finland in the Nations League last October. Advertisement Such were Brady's injury issues, he made just three appearances for Ireland between June 2021 and March 2023. He has since played in all but two of the games under Hallgrimsson, and was an ever-present during John O'Shea's interim spell in charge. Brady's importance to Ireland is accentuated by the fact he is with the Irish squad this week: Hallgrimsson sought to rest his Championship players for this window, given it falls so far into their off-season, but Brady is one of two Championship players nonetheless selected for the games, alongside Jason Knight. 'This is brilliant, I didn't expect to win it. . . shows how shite youse have all been if I'm winning this!', joked Brady in response.
