Oman U19 cricketers head to Nepal for ICC CWC Asia Qualifier

Muscat Daily09-04-2025

Muscat – Oman's U19 cricket team departed for Nepal on April 8, ready to test their mettle against some of Asia's top youth sides in the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup Asia Qualifier 2025. The high-stakes event, scheduled from April 13 to 19 in Kathmandu, will determine the sole Asian qualifier for the ICC U19 World Cup 2026.
Oman begin their campaign against Afghanistan in the tournament opener on April 13 at the Mulpani International Cricket Ground.
Hosts Nepal, UAE, Hong Kong, Afghanistan, and Oman will compete across both the Upper and Lower Mulpani grounds, with all matches starting at 9:30am local time.
The squad, led by Rahil Habibulla, features six new faces – Rishab Gupta, Ojjus Pachisia, Ayush Karthyic, Kavish Shah, Vignesh Karthikeyan, and Aryan Joshi – as the team looks to strike a balance with talent and experience.
While Oman earned their place in the Asia Qualifier by winning Division 2 last year, head coach Damith Warusavithana of Sri Lanka is realistic about the challenge ahead. Ahead of the departure, he said: 'We go in as underdogs, as Afghanistan and Nepal are the front-runners. But we are looking to compete and make sure to give our 100 percent and stand up to the best of our abilities.'
The head coach said the squad has undergone a thorough build-up phase, including over a dozen competitive matches and scenario-based training sessions designed to prepare players for high-pressure moments. 'The preparation in lead-up to the tournament was apt. We had a pool of 30 quality players, out of which the squad of 14 was selected,' he said.
'The training was more focused on scenarios which players were groomed to execute at different stages in matches.'
Warusavithana praised the team's commitment during a demanding period. 'The dedication from the group was commendable. The preparation was amid the February–March months with exams on, but the boys have balanced cricket and studies exceptionally and as thorough professionals.'
With the conditions in Nepal expected to be unfamiliar, Oman boys arrived early to acclimatise. 'We've concentrated on the physical, mental, and skill level of the players and are going a few days early to adapt well to the behaviour of the pitches,' Warusavithana added.
'Lastly, I thank the Oman Cricket Board and our support staff for their untiring efforts, which enabled us to prepare seamlessly for this important tournament.'
Earlier last week, Tanzania became the 12th team to confirm their place at the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2026 in Zimbabwe and Namibia after winning the Africa Qualifier. Tanzania will now be among the 16 teams competing at the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2026 in Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Ten teams have automatically qualified for the event as the best-placed Full Member nations from the previous event in 2024. These are: Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies. Full Member hosts of the 2026 edition Zimbabwe have also secured automatic qualification.
Tanzania have now taken one of five spots determined through regional qualification pathways, with one team from each region securing a place at the event.
Africa, Asia, Europe and East Asia-Pacific each have a two-step qualification process. Division 2 Qualifiers took place in 2024 to determine the teams that will be competing at the second and final stage, the Regional Qualifiers in 2025. The winning team from each Regional Qualifier in 2025 will qualify to compete at the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2026. The qualification pathway in the Americas region will only include a Regional Qualifier, and similarly, only the winning nation will secure a World Cup berth.
Oman squad: Rahil Habibulla (captain), Prathiesh HR (vice-captain), Nitish Nadendla, Saumya Sampat, Jeet Shah, Varshieth Dinesh, Siddharth Shankar, Omindu Medagoda, Rishab Gupta, Ojjus Pachisia, Ayush Karthyic, Kavish Shah, Vignesh Karthikeyan, Aryan Joshi.
Oman's fixtures (all matches 9:30 am local time): April 13 – vs Afghanistan, Upper Mulpani Ground; April 14 – vs Nepal, Upper Mulpani Ground; April 17 – vs UAE, Lower Mulpani Ground; April 18 – vs Hong Kong, Upper Mulpani Ground.

Records galore at Lord's after South Africa lifts maiden ICC title

London: South Africa's first ICC title since 1998, breaking the 28-year-long jinx, a 5-wicket triumph in the World Test Championship final against Australia triggered several records to be toppled at the 'Home of Cricket', Lord's. It has been a year of breaking jinxes across different sports. Bologna lifted the title for the first time in 51 years, while Newcastle United ended the drought after 56 years. Tottenham Hotspur lifted the Europa League for the first time in decades, and Paris Saint-Germain got their hands on the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history. In cricket, Royal Challengers Bengaluru's 18-year wait ended after they trounced Punjab Kings to lift their first IPL trophy. Now, South Africa has etched its name in history after ending its ICC trophy drought, which lasted for 9,722 days. A 282-run target was the ask from the Proteas to chase down and end their decades-long title hunt. Aiden Markram didn't put a foot wrong and cleared South Africa's route that led to the WTC mace with a swashbuckling 136(207). The Temba Bavuma-led troops gunned down the 282-run ask from the Baggy Greens, pulling off their fifth-highest chase in Test cricket, with four of those five wins being against Australia. Notably, it is also the second-highest chase at Lord's. South Africa extended its winning streak to eight with another success story, which began against the West Indies last August. This is the second-highest win streak for the Proteas in the format, behind nine successive wins, which they achieved back in 2002-03. The eight-match win streak is the highest in the World Test Championship history, bettering India and New Zealand, who won seven consecutive fixtures each during the inaugural cycle. Bavuma continued to flaunt his flawless record as South Africa's Test captain, winning nine and securing one draw. Only England's Percy Chapman (9) has had as many wins as Bavuma in the first 10 fixtures as Test captain. Markram's 136 marked his third ton in the fourth innings, and only former captain Graeme Smith (4) had more for the Proteas in the fourth innings.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar to host 4th round of WC qualifiers

MUSCAT: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced the Qatar Football Association (QFA) and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) as the hosts of the upcoming AFC Asian Qualifiers — Road to 26 Playoffs. The teams that qualified as third and fourth place from the last stage of the Asian qualifiers — namely, Indonesia, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates — will be divided into two groups, with each group comprising three teams. The six teams will compete in a centralised format from October 8 to 14, 2025. The group winners will secure the two remaining automatic berths at the Fifa World Cup 2026, while the second-placed teams from both groups will play against each other, with the winner advancing to the Fifa Play-off Tournament on November 13 and 18. The Official Draw is scheduled for July 17, 2025. On the other hand, the Oman Football Association (OFA) announced a statement on Thursday calling for the highest standards of transparency, fairness and integrity in the organisation and administration of regional and international football competitions. This aligns with Oman's preparations for the next phase of the AFC Asian Qualifiers — Road to the 2026 Fifa World Cup, where playoff matches will determine the remaining qualification slots in October 2025. In its official communication, the OFA stressed the importance of applying impartial and objective criteria when selecting host nations for the upcoming AFC playoff matches. The Association emphasised the need to guarantee equal opportunities for all competing teams and to safeguard their rights without exception. The OFA confirmed that it had submitted an official letter to both the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and Fifa, urging them to take clear and decisive measures that uphold competitive integrity and prevent any biased or unbalanced decision-making in the hosting process. The statement reiterated the OFA's belief in fair play and merit-based competition, calling on football's governing bodies to ensure the application of transparent procedures that reflect the spirit of the game and enhance the credibility of the qualification process. 'The OFA stands firmly for fairness and justice in football,' the statement concluded, expressing hope that the relevant authorities will respond with actions that strengthen confidence in the upcoming matches and contribute to the success of the global event.

New Delhi: The Sydney Sixers announced the signing of Pakistan superstar batter Babar Azam for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 15 season, marking one of the biggest acquisitions in the league's history, according to a release from the Sydney Sixers. Widely regarded as one of the premier batters of the modern era, Azam is set to bring his trademark class, consistency, and match-winning ability to the Sixers this summer. With over 10,000 international runs across all formats, the elegant right-hander has firmly established himself as one of the most prolific and dependable performers in world cricket. A central figure in the Pakistan national side over the last decade, Azam led his country across the three formats between 2019 and 2024, notably guiding the side to the semi-final of the ICC World Cup in 2021 and the final of the same tournament the following year. Renowned for his composure and reliability at the crease, Azam has consistently ranked among the world's top batters in the ODI and T20I formats in recent years, was named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year for consecutive seasons in 2021 and 2022, and was crowned the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year in 2022. A proven record-breaker in the game, he remains the fastest player in history to reach 5000 ODI runs, achieving the milestone in just 97 innings. With franchise experience across the Pakistan Super League, Caribbean Premier League, and English domestic competitions, Azam brings a wealth of T20 experience and over 11,000 runs in the format to date.] In a major boost for the league, the signing will see the 30-year-old make his highly anticipated debut in the Big Bash, with the star talent available for the duration of the competition, including finals. Sixers General Manager, Rachael Haynes, said the club was thrilled to secure a player of Babar's quality. "We are absolutely delighted to welcome Babar to the Sixers this summer." "Babar's resume speaks for itself. The skill, professionalism, and experience that he brings is of enormous value to our playing group and the news is obviously incredibly exciting for our fans." "He is a world-class player and a proven leader. He's not only a huge addition to our club, but to the league as a whole." "The Sixers strive to be a destination club on the global stage - from playing at the iconic SCG to delivering world-class match day experiences and signing the top talent from around the world - and securing a player of Babar's calibre only further strengthens that vision," Haynes added. "We can't wait to welcome Babar into our group later this year, and we know our members and fans will be thrilled to see him in Sixers colours." Speaking about the opportunity to join the Sixers, Babar said, "I'm very proud to be joining the Sydney Sixers for the upcoming season." "It's an exciting opportunity to play in one of the world's best T20 leagues and to be a part of such a successful and respected franchise." "I'm looking forward to contributing to the team's success, building a strong connection with the fans, and sharing this experience with my friends, family and supporters at home in Pakistan," Babar added.
