Nepal arrests five Indian nationals over kidnapping of Bangladeshis for ransom
KATHMANDU: Nepal Police have busted a kidnapping racket and arrested five Indian nationals on Wednesday for allegedly holding Bangladeshi tourists hostage for ransom in the Himalayan nation.
Those arrested include Shiva Saurabh, 34, from Delhi, Ramesh Jadav, 64, from Kanpur; and Dipak Kumar, 32, Sandip Kumar, 36, and Jasprit Singh, 38, all from Punjab, according to Senior Superintendent of Police Apil Bohara, spokesperson for Kathmandu Metropolitan Police.
The gang had abducted seven Bangladeshi nationals visiting Nepal under the pretext of offering them cheap travel packages, Bohara told PTI.
The Bangladeshi nationals were held hostage in a rented house in Lalitpur Metropolitan City, within the Kathmandu Valley, and were subjected to both mental and physical torture, police said.
The criminals seized USD 2,000-3,500 from each person and their mobile phones, and forced them to request millions of dollars in ransom via WhatsApp.
The Bangladeshi nationals were reportedly beaten and threatened with death. The police, acting upon a tip-off, arrested the Indian nationals from different parts of Kathmandu.
The Kathmandu District Court has granted a six-day judicial remand for further investigation.

Farmer injured in gaur attack in Kolhapur
Kolhapur: Like any other day, 55-year-old Balu Kushappa Sawat had gone harvesting sugar cane on the banks of Jambhali river on Thursday. Absorbed in work, the farmer from Kaljavde village in Panhala tehsil didn't notice a gaur (Indian bison) charging toward him. The animal lunged at him, tossed him into the air and its deadly horns pierced deep into Sawat's ribs on his left. His wails of searing pain drew nearby farmers, who rushed him to Kolhapur's CPR Hospital. Gaur attacks are on a rise in the area and reports of injuries to farmers have become more frequent the last few months. Bazar Bhogaon forest ranger RS Rasal, Panhala range forest officer Ajit Mali and forest guards Pooja Narute, Bhujanga Patil and Shankar Patil visited Sawat at CPR Hospital. Rasal said, "Farmers should be careful while going to the fields or taking cattle for grazing. We carried out a panchnama. The injured person is in stable condition. UP: 2 accused of gang rape of minor girl in Muzaffarnagar sentenced to life
Last Updated: Muzaffarnagar (UP), Jun 13 (PTI) A special court here on Friday convicted two accused in connection with the gang rape of a minor girl and sentenced them to life imprisonment. Special public prosecutor Vikrant Rathi said that Special Judge Alka Bharti of the POCSO Court convicted two accused, Ravinder and Kapil, of raping a 16-year-old girl in the Shahpur police station area of Muzaffarnagar district two years ago. The judge sentenced them to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on the two accused. According to the police, the incident took place on September 18, 2023, when the girl went out of her house to wash clothes.
