A driver has hit children with a car near an elementary school in Beijing
BEIJING (AP) — A driver hit an unknown number of children with their car near an elementary school in an outlying district of Beijing, police and media reports said Thursday.
It wasn't immediately clear if it was another case of a driver intentionally running into people in China.
A short statement from police in Beijing's Miyun district described the cause only as 'improper operation' of the vehicle. The statement said it happened near the intersection of two streets, but didn't mention the nearby school or whether children were among the victims.
Online maps show that Miyun No. 1 Elementary School is just north of the intersection. Miyun is about 60 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of central Beijing.
Nearby shop owners told news outlet Caixin that several children had been injured, and a hospital told the outlet that it and one other hospital was treating some of the children. It wasn't clear if any had died.
There have been several recent cases in China of drivers hitting people, often outside schools, as well as knife attacks on crowds. Police have previously said that the attackers were upset or depressed and taking out their anger on random targets.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping made the issue a priority after a particularly deadly case in November that killed 35 people in Zhuhai, a city on China's southern coast.
Since then, reports about the attacks have been censored, in an apparent attempt to prevent copycat crimes. Photos of the aftermath Thursday were quickly removed from social media sites and comments on what had happened were taken down.

Create Account The explosion occurred Wednesday at the Barthelemy Boganda High School in Bangui when power was being restored to an electrical transformer within the school premises after it malfunctioned, according to the country's Ministry of National Education. Most of the victims — including 16 girls — died at the scene after the explosion resulted in a stampede while others were confirmed dead at the hospital, the Ministry of Health said in a statement. At least 260 students were injured and being treated in various hospitals, the ministry said. An estimated 5,000 students were at the school for higher-education exams at the time. 'The building shook and we were all terrified. It was everyone man for himself,' said Alvin Yaligao, one of the students. Some of the victims died after jumping out of the building while others were killed in the stampede at the crowded entrance to the upper floors in an attempt to escape. Many other students fainted amid the chaos and were rushed to the hospital, some of them transported on motorcycles. Many people in the area were angered, accusing the government of negligence for not handling the problems with the electrical transformer. Government officials and workers who arrived at the scene were pelted with different objects by angry residents. 'We deplore this incident which was caused by a lack of maintenance,' Gedeon Cyr Ngaisse, president of the school's parents' association, told reporters. Indonesian police suspect 3 Australians of premeditated murder of a fellow national in Bali
MENGWI, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesian police investigating the fatal shooting of an Australian tourist at a villa on the resort island of Bali said Thursday that two Australians are suspected of arriving on a scooter and opening fire and another Australian of facilitating the crime. Zivan Radmanovic, a 32-year-old from Melbourne, was killed just after midnight on June 13 at a villa near Munggu Beach in Bali's Badung district. A second man, a 34-year-old from Melbourne, was left beaten in the attack. Police previously announced that they had arrested three Australian men, and at a news conference Thursday gave new details of an investigation they said was supported by the Australian Federal Police. Investigators have not revealed a motive in the killing, but said they have enough evidence to bring the men to trial on charges of premeditated murder, which could carry a life sentence or the death penalty. The crime scene investigation and surveillance cameras have showed that two suspects, identified by their initials as MC and PT, were the shooters, Bali Police Chief Daniel Adityajaya told a news conference in Badung. The third suspect, identified as DJF, helped the others by buying a hammer used to break down the villa door, renting two cars and three motorcycles and buying ferry and bus tickets to flee the island, Adityajaya said. One of the suspects was caught at Jakarta's Soekarno Hatta international airport on June 16, and the following day the other two were arrested with the help of Interpol, in Singapore and Cambodia, and sent back to Indonesia. Police on Thursday presented the three suspects handcuffed and wearing orange prison uniforms. Witnesses at the villa told investigators that two gunmen arrived on a scooter at the villa around midnight. Radmanovic was shot in a bathroom of his room, where police found 18 bullet casings and two intact bullets. Radmanovic's partner, Jazmyn Gourdeas, 30, told police that she suddenly woke up when she heard her husband screaming. She cowered under a blanket when she heard multiple gunshots. She later found her husband's body and the other injured Australian, whose wife also testified to seeing the attackers. The women are sisters. Adityajaya said police have retrieved one of two guns that were thrown away by the suspects near a rice field, about 700 meters (yards) from the villa. They also found bullet residues at gloves and balaclavas inside a white van used by the three men, and the same residues also were found on the bodies of two of the suspects. Police did not detail how they believe the suspects obtained the weapons, which are heavily regulated in Indonesia, but Adityajaya said police were still gathering evidence. Adityajaya said that the Australian national who survived the attack and the women have been relocated to a secure location.

Prosecutor casts Sean ‘Diddy' Combs as a criminal who abused others through power, violence and fear
NEW YORK (AP) — Two days of closing arguments in Sean 'Diddy' Combs ' sex trafficking trial began on Thursday with a prosecutor telling the jury the hip-hop mogul used 'power, violence and fear' to rule a criminal enterprise that facilitated kidnapping, arson and brutal sex crimes that she said were at the heart of the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik provided the jury with a road map for a closing argument expected to last several hours. She described Combs as someone 'who doesn't take no for an answer,' while he committed crimes of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy for two decades. Combs 'counted on silence and shame' to enable and prolong his abuse, Slavik said. He used a 'small army' of employees — an inner circle that included personal assistants and bodyguards — to harm women and cover it up, she said. The theory of racketeering law is that 'when someone commits crime as part of a group, they're more powerful and dangerous,' Slavik said. 'The defendant was a powerful man, but he became more powerful and dangerous because of his inner circle, his businesses — the enterprise.' Prosecutors say Combs coerced and abused women for years as he used his 'power and prestige' as a music star to enlist a network of associates and employees to help him while he silenced victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnapping, arson and physical beatings. They say the Bad Boy Records founder induced female victims into drugged-up, elaborately produced sexual performances with male sex workers in events dubbed 'Freak Offs.' Defense lawyers have argued that Combs was involved in domestic violence but committed no federal crimes. They built their case for acquittal through lengthy cross-examinations of most of the government's 34 witnesses. Some witnesses testified only in response to subpoenas and made it clear to the jury that they didn't want to be there. Before Slavik began her closing, Judge Arun Subramanian told the jury they would hear a closing argument from a defense lawyer on Friday and a rebuttal by a prosecutor before he instructs them on the law and allows them to begin deliberating as early as late afternoon.
