Memphis Grizzlies release former Wisconsin basketball star
The Memphis Grizzlies are releasing former Wisconsin basketball star Johnny Davis, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
Exactly two weeks after being traded from the Washington Wizards to Memphis ahead of the NBA's Feb. 6 trade deadline, Davis will be on the move once more. The former lottery pick didn't suit up for the Grizzlies during his two weeks with the team.
He, alongside Marvin Bagley III and a batch of second-round picks, went to the Grizzlies in exchange for Marcus Smart, Colby Jones, Alex Len and a 2025 first-round pick. Now, the Grizzlies have opened a roster spot for forward Lamar Stevens by releasing Davis. Charania did note that the former Badger is expected to receive interest from other franchises as a free agent.
Memphis clearly prioritized length and experience over Davis' lack of playing time. Through 203 career games, Stevens has logged 5.7 points and 2.9 rebounds in just under 16 minutes per appearance. For a team hoping to make a deep run in the NBA's Western Conference playoffs, this was an understandable move.
The Grizzlies are releasing Johnny Davis to create roster space, sources said. Davis, the No. 10 pick in 2022, is expected to receive some interest as a free agent. https://t.co/XcZ3Z3KTzv

The La Crosse, Wisconsin, native joined Washington as the No. 10 overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft following a storied tenure in Madison. With the Wizards, however, he did not experience the same success.
In 112 games in Washington, he averaged just 11.4 minutes, 3.5 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.6 assists. He did log some time with the Capital City Go-Go, Washington's G League affiliate, as he navigated through the NBA waters. While rumors of potential suitors are certainly real, the G League remains Davis' likely destination. He simply has yet to showcase the ceiling he displayed during his 19.7-point, 8.2-rebound campaign with the Badgers in 2021-22 -- the year he led Greg Gard's group to a Big Ten title.

One potential area of improvement for Jayden Daniels in 2025
completions of 25+ air yards:22 - GB2120 - PIT, MIN2918 - IND17 - LAC, CIN16151413 - TEN, PHI12 - BUF, SEA, DEN, LV, CAR11 - BAL, WAS, NO, SF, JAX, HOU, DAL, NE, NYJ10 - TB, CHI9 - ATL,NYG8 - LAR,DET7 - CLE6 - KC5 - ARI, MIA*2024 regular season Which NFL quarterback completed the most passes in 2024 with 25+ air yards? In addition, where did Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels rank last season in completions down the field at least 25 yards? It's important to remember and distinguish that this statistic in no way includes yards after the catch. It strictly includes plays where the ball traveled from the quarterback to the receiver at least 25 yards down the field. On Tuesday, analyst Warren Sharp provided each team's data on X (formerly Twitter) during the 2024 season. Jayden Daniels had a great rookie season and was voted NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year for the 2024 season. However, this was not one of his better statistics. Only 10 teams completed fewer passes of 25+ air yards than Washington did in 2024. The Commanders totaled only 11 passes of 25+ air yards, tying with Baltimore, New Orleans, San Francisco, Jacksonville, Houston, Dallas, New England and the New York Jets. Losing Dyami Brown, the Commanders might find it difficult to replace Brown as a deep threat. Although they are expected to rely heavily on getting the ball to Deebo Samuel and Zach Ertz, both of whom specialize in getting open on shorter routes. Terry McLaurin may be the only deep threat to make the team. We will have to wait and see if Michael Gallup, Noah Brown, Jaylin Lane, Luke McCaffrey, Chris Moon, K.J. Osborn, or JaCorey Brooks become a deep threat in 2025. Lane and Brooks, both rookies, show exciting promise in this area. The Green Bay Packers were the only team in the NFL with over 20 such completions last season, finishing with 22. The Commanders' secondary will no doubt be tested often and deep in the second game of the season when Washington travels to Green Bay for a Thursday Night Week 2 contest. The Steelers and Vikings both completed 20 passes with 25+ air yards, the Colts had 18, and the Chargers and Bengals both had 17. Next were the Titans and Eagles with 13. As for some surprisingly low results? Sean McVay's passing game featuring Matthew Stafford came in with only eight, as did the high-scoring, explosive Lions. Which goes to show, you don't have to throw the ball 25+ yards to score a lot of points. The biggest surprise may actually be that Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs completed a mere six last season. Yes, Mahomes was dumping off the ball often, throwing mostly shorter routes. At the very bottom were the Cardinals and Dolphins, both with a mere five such pass completions all season.

Why Ace Bailey may slide in the 2025 NBA Draft
The idea that Ace Bailey may slide in the 2025 NBA Draft would've sounded ridiculous just a month or two ago. As a Rutgers freshman, Bailey averaged 17.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists with 1.3 blocks and 1.0 steal per game. He was must-see TV alongside Dylan Harper, and though the Scarlet Knights missed the NCAA Tournament, help prove the program could still develop talent. Things change fast in this league — even before you're officially part of it. In his final mock draft, For The Win senior NBA writer Bryan Kalbrosky had Bailey sliding to the Brooklyn Nets at No. 8 overall. 2025 NBA Mock Draft 8.0: Final predictions and updated intel for all 59 picks Come Wednesday, it'll be anyone's guess where Bailey falls in the draft after some alarming intel came out during the pre-draft process. Most notably, Bailey refused to work outs for NBA teams and reportedly canceled on the Philadelphia 76ers after agreeing to get on the court for them. That came after he measured much lower than anticipated (6-foot-7) at the NBA Combine. More, per Sam Vecenie via The Athletic: The intel that NBA teams have on Bailey, from having spoken with over a dozen sources throughout the season and pre-draft process, is that his teammates enjoyed being around him. He has a lot of infectious energy. But he's a bit immature and can struggle with focus, those sources said. His pre-draft interviews with teams at the NBA Draft Combine did not go particularly well, as it seemed like he went into them a bit ill-prepared for what was being asked of him, according to sources. Taken together, even Bailey's undeniable talents may not be enough to get him back into Top 3 pick territory. We'll find out soon enough.

Why Derik Queen may slide in the 2025 NBA Draft
For quite awhile it seemed like Maryland's magical run to the Sweet Sixteen would serve as a launchpad for Derik Queen to hear his name called early on during the 2025 NBA Draft. Despite some incredible highlights during the NCAA Tournament, it seems that narrative has run out of juice and some concerns around his game may have impacted his draft stock. For The Win's Bryan Kalbrosky's final mock draft has Queen at No. 7 overall to New Orleans, but If center slides out of the lottery on Wednesday night, it won't be a huge shock. 2025 NBA Mock Draft 8.0: Final predictions and updated intel for all 59 picks To understand why, first start with Queen's NBA Combine results. He measured a bit undersized for a center at 6'9.25' barefoot. He ranked last among all participants in lane agility time (12.45 seconds), tied for worst in standing vertical (23.5 inches), second-worst in shuttle run (3.27 seconds), second-worst in three-quarter sprint (3.52 seconds), and tied for second-worst in max vertical leap (28.0 inches). More, according to Jeremy Woo via ESPN: Queen continues to receive mixed feedback on the workout circuit, with questions still hovering over his conditioning, shooting mechanics and competitive on-off switch. Although he is regarded as the most skilled big in the class offensively, he doesn't appear to be maximizing some of the factors within his control and, as a result, hasn't gathered much upward momentum during the pre-draft process. Perhaps most concerning was a quote given by a Western Conference scout to David Aldridge of The Athletic: 'Nice kid. Heavy emphasis on kid. We interviewed him, and he's 19 going on 14. He can do one thing: he can score. But you don't want to have to rely on a rookie scoring for you to contribute.' The Baltimore native averaged 16.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and shot 52.6 percent from the floor as a freshman last season. That might be more than enough reason for a team to grab him early. If not, he'll make a another club very happy with his slide.
