PSNI data breach: Pair charged over alleged New IRA activity
Two men have appeared in court charged with terrorism offences linked to a major PSNI data breach.Brian Francis Cavlan, 49, from Coronation Park, Aughnacloy and Rory Martin Logan, 43, from Ross Close, Enniskillen, but currently remanded in custody, appeared before court on Thursday.They were arrested on Tuesday as part of an ongoing police investigation into the activities of the New IRA. They are accused of having information likely to be of use to terrorists.
Shared 'a considerable amount'
A Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) officer said he could connect both to the charges.A spreadsheet containing police officers' names, and those of civilian staff, were found on mobile phones belonging to the accused, the court was told.The pair appeared together in the dock of Strabane Magistrates' Court but refused to acknowledge the proceedings.It is alleged on 12 April 2024, Mr Calvan possessed two spreadsheets containing details of serving PSNI police officers and staff members.The officer told the court that Mr Cavlan had screenshots of certain parts of the spreadsheet.Under questioning from a defence lawyer, he agreed that there was no evidence that Mr Cavlan had downloaded the spreadsheet from the source.And he agreed the spreadsheet had been shared " a considerable amount of times."Mr Logan is charged with having a spreadsheet of serving PSNI officers and staff on 11June 2024. He did not apply for bail. Mr Cavlan was denied bail due, the judge said, to "real and evident" risks of reoffending, and concerns that bail conditions could not be managed.The data breach happened in August, when police released the names of more than 10,000 staff and officers by mistake, under a Freedom of Information (FoI) request.Both men will appear again by video link at Omagh Magistrates' Court on 25 February.

Britain's grooming gangs scandal has dominated the news this week, after the publication of Baroness Casey's review on Monday. Now data from the Ministry of Justice has emerged showing that over a quarter of sex assaults on women – that have been successfully prosecuted in the UK – were committed by foreign nationals. It's quite the stat… The data, which came to light through Freedom of Information requests, revealed that of the 1,453 sex assault convictions on women in 2024, 26 per cent were foreign nationals. There are suggestions that the real total could be higher, given that those 8 per cent recorded as having perpetrators of 'unknown' nationalities could also include foreign nationals. Casey's review revealed, as Home Secretary Yvette Cooper told the Commons on Monday afternoon, that disproportionate numbers of Asian and Pakistani men were responsible for grooming gang abuse – while consecutive governments and authorities failed to act due to concerns about racism. More than that, the audit found that both foreign nationals and asylum seekers were involved in a 'significant proportion' of 12 active and ongoing police investigations into grooming gangs. The Centre for Migration Control think tank got hold of the data on sex crimes – which also found that foreign nationals for over 20 per cent of all rape convictions last year. Good heavens… Baroness Casey did say, however, that while the report found an overrepresentation of Pakistani men in cases of child sexual exploitation, white men were more commonly suspects in cases of child abuse. The crossbench peer has also taken aim this week at the authorities who failed victims, the police and their ability to only 'half-collect' race data, and at politicians for the 'politicisation' of the issue. On that note, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has taken a pop at Tory leader Kemi Badenoch – claiming when her party was in power she did not raise the issue of grooming gangs 'not once', while he was 'calling even then for mandatory reporting' – while the Conservatives have claimed the issue is one of 'borders, beyond criminal justice'. The Labour lot certainly has their work cut out…

Public warned as petrol bombs thrown at police during disorder
Petrol bombs have been thrown at police in Northern Ireland after disorder broke out again on Tuesday. The PSNI said a number of missiles, including masonry and petrol bombs, have been thrown towards police officers. The disorder broke out in the Nailors Row area of Derry on Tuesday evening. Police have asked motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area. Earlier, a 13-year-old boy was arrested following previous incidents of disorder in Londonderry. An 18-year-old was also arrested after the scenes in the Nailors Road area on Monday night. A police spokesperson said three officers were injured after missiles were thrown at police between 9.30pm and midnight. They said two officers were struck by masonry, while a third was hit by a firework. The 13-year-old boy and 18-year-old male were both arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour, and have both since been released on bail to allow for further police inquiries.

Photos released in police appeal over recent disorder
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has released images of six more people they would like to speak to about the recent disorder in Ballymena. They are asking the individuals in the photographs to come forward themselves, or for anyone who can assist in identifying them to contact police. The violence began following a peaceful protest in Ballymena and then spread to other areas of Northern Ireland, including Larne and Portadown. 31 arrests have been made to date in relation to the recent racially-motivated disorder, with 23 people charged so far. Violence first broke out in Ballymena on 9 June after two teenage boys appeared before Coleraine Magistrates Court accused of sexually assaulting a teenage spoke through an interpreter in Romanian to confirm their names and solicitor said they would be denying the charges.A peaceful protest was held on Monday 9 June, but after it dispersed rioting broke out.A number of nights of violence then followed in which 64 police officers were injured. In a statement on Tuesday night a PSNI spokesperson said they are seeking to identify six individuals "in connection with our ongoing investigation into a number of incidents of disorder and attacks on police officers since Monday, 9th June 2025 in the Ballymena area"."Anyone who can assist in identifying these individuals should contact us on 101, or directly on 028 9092 2815."
