Montverde overwhelms Windermere prep in tourney opener 81-41

MONTVERDE — Coach Brian Hoff and his Windermere Prep boys basketball players are used to winning games. The Lakers have won 20 games in each of the past three seasons and even played for the Class 3A state championship the past two years, losing both times to Miami Riviera Prep.
But sometimes, Hoff understands, there are realistic expectations to consider. One of those times was Thursday night in the first round of the Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament.
Facing the nationally-ranked home team, Windermere Prep was outmanned in every phase of the game and was overwhelmed in an 81-41 shellacking that prompted a running clock in the fourth quarter.
'Well it's easy for a game to get away from you here, especially playing in the MAIT,' Hoff said. 'Montverde is always tough, especially when they are playing here on their home court, so give credit to them. They'll have a chance to win a national championship this year.'
WPS went through an early drought in the first quarter that saw the Lakers fail to score on five straight possessions, and while Montverde's Dante Allen, a Villanova commit, was burying 3-pointers, WPS found itself in a 19-4 hole and that was about it.
The Lakers (16-6) did start to chip away at the lead, starting the second quarter with an 8-2 spurt that cut the lead to 24-15, but that was as close as they would get.
'I was proud of the guys for their fight,' Hoff said, 'and I'm happy with how we played in spurts tonight.'
WPS was led Brandon Bass Jr., who had 16 points and Malachi Martis added 11.
There wasn't really much that Montverde did wrong. The Eagles, ranked No. 5 in the country by ESPN, hit a blistering 64% of their floor shots, including half of their 26 3-point attempts. Allen, who is from Miami, was 6-of-6 shooting, with five 3-pointers and led the way with 18 points. Indiana commit Trent Sisley, of Santa Claus, Ind., was 5-of-5 shooting with a 3-pointer for 13 points, and Creighton commit Hudson Greer, of Lakeway, Texas, added 12 points.
Montverde forced 23 WPS turnovers and outrebounded the smaller Lakers 25-17. The shortest Montverde starter was 6-foot-4, and the Eagles went 6-8, 6-6, 6-6 across the front line, while the tallest WPS player was 6-6.
The Eagles will now face Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian in the MAIT semifinals on Friday at 8 p.m. Calvary defeated No. 19-ranked AZ Compass, of Chandler, Ariz., 58-49 in one quarterfinal, while CIA-Bella Vista, of Scottsdale, Ariz., defeated Riviera Prep 72-43 and No. 7 Utah Prep defeated Weston Sagemont Prep 82-79.
Montverde coach Kevin Boyle was happy to see his team snap out of a two-game skid, the first time the Eagles had lost two straight games since 2012. Montverde lost AZ Compass 45-41 and Miami Columbus 79-59.
'It's a long time since that happened,' Boyle said of the two-game skid. 'We were showing a lot of improvement, but then we kinda got upset by Arizona Compass, which is a good team, and then obviously Columbus really outplayed us and we kinda go overwhelmed down there.
'In this level of high school, you don't play a lot of real road games with intense crowds. Columbus had one in a small gym and for our kids it was kinda like playing at Duke. … They kinda got stage fright and froze a little bit.'
Boyle knows the rest of the weekend won't be as easy as was Thursday night's victory.
'Obviously we had better athletes and guys who are a little more experienced players,' Boyle said. 'We also had a lot of good looks and we're not going to get those type of looks against bigger, more athletic guys. So we're not gonna shoot those kinds of shots.'
The Montverde girls, who are ranked No. 2 in the nation by ESPN, rolled past Fort Erie International of Ontario, Canada, on Thursday 73-55. Saniyah Hall had 22 points, 6 assists, 5 steals and 5 rebounds in the game, while Lourdes Da Silva Costa added 19 points.

"Kevin Garnett literally posted him deep in the lane, knocked him down, and dunked the ball" - Phil Jackson recalls the Finals play that fueled Pau Gasol to work on his strength

"Kevin Garnett literally posted him deep in the lane, knocked him down, and dunked the ball" - Phil Jackson recalls the Finals play that fueled Pau Gasol to work on his strength originally appeared on Basketball Network. Phil Jackson deeply understood the emotional toll that the Los Angeles Lakers experienced after their loss to the Boston Celtics in the 2008 NBA Finals. While Kobe Bryant was undeniably the team's leader and driving force, "The Zen Master" also felt the heavy disappointment that weighed on Lakers' All-Star big man Pau Gasol. Advertisement The memory of that series remains vivid for Coach Jackson, particularly one specific play that served as a turning point in his perspective on Gasol. Despite Pau's impressive skills and relentless effort on the court throughout that playoff run, it became clear to Phil that he was not yet equipped to handle the intense physicality that NBA championship basketball demands. For Jackson, this realization highlighted the challenges the team was about to face if they really wanted to get back to their winning ways. Moreover, it also served as a rude awakening for Gasol. "The humbling defeat by the Celtics during the Finals was a challenge to Pau," the legendary coach reflected. "In the final game, early in the first period, Kevin Garnett literally posted him deep in the lane, knocked him down, and dunked the ball. Probably an offensive foul, but not a call in that Finals." Pau took it personally Like what Jackson sensed in his star power forward at the time, Gasol was also devastated. Though it was only Pau's first trip to the NBA Finals, the feeling of being so close to capturing the coveted championship and ultimately failing left the Spaniard dejected. Advertisement Instead of staying depressed, Gasol took it upon himself to spend the summer getting better. With the unwavering moral support of Coach Jackson and Kobe, "Meal Ticket" found the strength to rise again. He dedicated himself wholeheartedly to rigorous workouts, channeling his energy into building and strengthening his body. "Pau took the challenge and worked on his strength game and was able to fight back in the 2010 Finals," Jackson fondly recalled. As the muscles in his body were developing, Gasol's mind was undergoing a transformation as well. He was laser-focused on achieving nothing short of a championship victory next season, determined to not only contribute to the legacy of the storied franchise but also achieve his ultimate goal. With the entire Lakers organization rallying behind him, Pau felt the immense encouragement that fueled his ambition and drive. The combination of physical conditioning and mental fortitude set the stage for the versatile big man's inspiring comeback, reaffirming his commitment to winning the chip. Advertisement "It had a big effect. The frustration and the pain that it caused us and me personally," Gasol confided as he looked back at the Lakers' championship loss in '08. "It definitely fueled me. It made me a better player. It made me work harder. It made me more prepared. It made me more determined about winning a championship." "Kobe was the same way," he continued. "He had that fire in him. He wanted to win it so badly. That's why he always motivated me along with Phil to be the best version of myself and to be the best player that I could be. To push me and challenge me to be better, I took that personally. That's what mattered to me. It wasn't so much about comments made on the outside. It was a feeling that we didn't get this one, but we're going to do everything we can to get the next one. We put ourselves in a position to do that, and we did," Pau explained. Related: "Dad, you at 17, me at 17, who was better? I said, 'Listen, son...'" - Dominique Wilkins on the moment he realized his son didn't know how great of a player he was Pau got his revenge Just as how he envisioned it, Gasol bounced back stronger in the 2008-09 season. He showcased his all-around skills throughout the year, playing a pivotal role in leading the Lakers to an NBA championship victory over the Orlando Magic. Advertisement Building on this success, the six-time All-Star even elevated his performance to new heights in the following season. Pau delivered the most outstanding playoff performances of his NBA career, impressively averaging 19.6 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game in the 2009-10 postseason. What made this achievement even more significant was Gasol's chance to redeem the Lakers after their disappointing defeat in the '08 Finals. In a thrilling rematch, the Lakers faced off against the Celtics once again. Alongside Andrew Bynum, Gasol played a crucial role in helping his team secure the chip in seven hard-fought games and finally avenging their upsetting defeat. "Of course, Andrew Bynum was unable to play due to injury in the 2008 Finals," Phil further recounted. "But he was injury-free in the 2009 win over Orlando and the seven-game series vs the Celtics in 2010. He and Pau were a potent force together with that Laker team." Advertisement In retrospect, Gasol's championship journey with the Lakers is not only defined by his resilience and talent. It also solidified his place as a key figure in the franchise's history. Former NBA player recalls a fight between Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal

Former NBA player recalls a fight between Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant made up one of the greatest and most successful superstar duos in NBA history. In eight seasons together, they led the Los Angeles Lakers to three straight NBA championships and resurrected their mystique after a rough rebuilding process during the 1990s. They represented a blend of O'Neal's brute force and power and Bryant's creativity, athleticism, sublime scoring skills and incredible clutch ability. Perhaps no other duo in basketball history was as talented as this one. But of course, the two butted heads at times. Olden Polynice, a former NBA big man, was present when the Hall of Famers actually went at it during a practice session, and he recalled what happened during an episode of former Lakers star Byron Scott's "Fast Break" podcast. 'So, we're at Southwest College, right, playing,' Polynice said. 'I'm trying to get — I'm a Laker fan. I wanna be on the Lakers. I gotta be around the Lakers. So, I'm working — we working out. I'm guarding Shaq, blah, blah, blah. Basket, 'Yeah, this is my team, [expletive].' Basket down there, 'Yeah, naw, naw, this is my team.' 'It's going back and forth between the two of 'em. Okay, no problem. I mean, that's us. We're ballers. Mitch Kupchak's sitting over there chilling with Laker brass, and all of a sudden, there's a dead ball. 'They just going back and forth, but I'm thinking it's still part of the crap that we do. 'Nah, [expletive], I'll kick your [expletive].' I'm like, 'Oh [expletive], okay. Are they about to fight?'' In Jeff Pearlman's book "Three-Ring Circus: Kobe, Shaq, Phil, and the Crazy Years of the Lakers Dynasty," a fight between O'Neal and Bryant from just prior to the 1999 season was recounted. It appears that was the fight Polynice was referring to. During his podcast appearance, Polynice said that O'Neal attempted to throw a punch at Bryant, but he grabbed Bryant and prevented the punch from landing. O'Neal then chased the guard, and Polynice grabbed the big man to try to diffuse the situation. In retrospect, given the problems the two superstars had at times, and given that both were alpha males who were perhaps better suited to leading their own individual teams, it's amazing that their partnership lasted as long as it did and was as fruitful as it was. Lakers fans will never forget the sweet memories the two provided during those turbulent but exciting days back in the early days of the 21st century.
