A FISHGUARD amateur rider has qualified for the prestigious Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) following a standout performance at a major qualifier in Warwickshire.
Hannah Jenkins and her eye-catching grey horse, Le Paz—known as Balou at home—secured victory in the Working Horse class at the SEIB Search for a Star qualifier held at Stoneleigh Park on Saturday (May 25). Judged by top showing experts Nicola Taylor and Richard Ramsay, the win earns the pair a coveted place in the HOYS finals at the NEC Birmingham this October.
Hannah, who works full-time as an intensive care nurse, spoke of the challenges she faced juggling work commitments and competition preparation. The pair narrowly missed qualification at an earlier event at Hartpury University, where they finished runners-up.
'Hartpury was originally the only qualifier I could do,' she said. 'After we came second there, I thought, 'I'm going to have to try again now,' so I swapped my shifts around so we could come here today.'
Balou originally came to Hannah on loan from her best friend, who bred him. 'I had twin boys and she knew I got on with Balou and wanted to help me get back in the saddle,' Hannah explained. 'He came to stay and never left. I've owned him since last summer and I love him to bits.'
Nicolina MacKenzie, organiser of SEIB Search for a Star, praised Hannah's determination and the ethos of the competition. 'Search for a Star is all about the journey—learning and improving over time. Our team of judges and stewards are committed to supporting competitors and helping them achieve their potential.'
The SEIB Search for a Star series, launched in 1996, has opened the door for thousands of amateur riders to compete at national level, including at HOYS and Your Horse Live. Qualifiers take place throughout the country, offering a broad range of classes for amateur show riders.

But after a year of painful decisions and hard work - it has paid off. Hollyoaks was second only to EastEnders at this weekend's British Soap Awards - taking home three gongs. And now the show is heading full speed ahead towards its 30th anniversary in October - and it will be a month-long celebration. Hannah said: 'In that week, we want to make it a celebration across the whole month really because we can't physically fit all of the characters into that. 'So that's why it's kind of becomes a bit more of a challenge in terms of which stories that you really want to hear about and focus on. 'But obviously there just needs to be enough of a sense of nostalgia in terms of Hollyoaks' origin story and everything that we love and know about the show. 'But then also the kind of characters that are going to be able to shake things up and create jeopardy and danger and spit things out in a different way at the end of that. 'And I want it to be where you can't take your eyes off the screen levels of energy, but also with absolutely kind of surprising but searing moments of heartache and good tears, happy tears, sad tears, tears and shock and try and celebrate all things Hollyoaks in a very efficient three by 18 and a half minute format.' And while there won't be a feature-length episode, there will be another shock coming - one fans will love. Clare Devine returns to the village 'There is something else that will be a huge delight and a real nod to Hollyoaks' origin story,' she revealed. 'That will happen in the third episode of the week, which I absolutely cannot talk about, but is going to be incredibly exciting.' Hannah added: 'You can't do a Hollyoaks commemoration without some kind of spectacle. So there will be a stunt.' It's the Baked Chef! Jamie Oliver draws up plans to transform former stable block at his historic home into a pop-up takeaway bakery
Jamie Oliver has applied to turn a former stable block at his historic home into a pop-up takeaway bakery. The celebrity chef plans to plan baked goods, sandwiches and coffee from the site at his sprawling Essex mansion seven days a week, from 9am to 5pm. Oliver - who shot to fame as the Naked Chef - says the goods will primarily be for takeaway, but plans for the site's transformation shows rows of indoor and outdoor tables he hopes to fill with customers. Punters will be served from a 'historic feeding trough' from the estimated six employees in August 2025. If approved, the bakery will open operate in the grounds of Spains Hall, a Grade I listed Tudor home built in around 1570. The site was previously used host weddings, before it was bought by Oliver in 2019 for £6million. The Coach House and Stable Block originally dates from 18th Century and was first listed in 1967 when it was in use as stables. Oliver's representatives said: 'This proposal represents an exciting opportunity to trial a new, small scale commercial use within the Spains Hall estate.' It adds: 'It is envisaged that the site will operate as a pop-up Bakery / Coffee / Sandwich shop (predominantly on a takeaway basis) for the month of August 2025 only. It is proposed to keep the facilities open 7 days a week 09:00 – 17:00.' The plans do not require any physical alterations to the site, which already has men's, women's and disabled toilets as well as a staffroom and a kitchen. The chef owns the closest residential properties around the site, the proposal notes, as it claims the temporary change of use is not 'unacceptable'. Parts of the home and its grounds already have permission to be used as a film studio, and the property has already been the base for his TV shows - including one over lockdown, where his family acted as the crew. The bakery will need three deliveries by HGV lorries every week to fuel the kitchen, with as many as 26 cars being able to park at the site at one time. The application stated that customers would use the existing parking at the back of the Stable Block while an extra area would be available for an overflow if needed. They claim they will serve just 20-50 customers a day, while the site was able to accommodate as many as 140 people as a wedding venue. His reprensentatives stated: 'The proposed temporary change of use offers the opportunity to trial a new small scale commercial use within a rural location which will not cause any detrimental heritage, traffic or amenity impacts.' Oliver, via his representatives added: 'The existing kitchen within the building will be used for food preparation. 'Public access would be restricted to the main room open plan within the building plus the toilets, both of which are on the ground floor. 'No physical alterations are required to the building internally or externally in support of the proposals and there is no impact on any areas of soft landscaping or habitat.' Since the Middle Ages, the house and estate in Finchingfield, Essex, has been in the ownership of just three families, and was sold to Oliver in 2019. Oliver has previously sought permission for repair works to the property, including windows, doors, and masonry and is credited with renovating it from a state of disrepair. Oliver bought his Essex mansion in 2019 and had building work done on the house before he moved in, including the restoration of many original features. The manor house boasts 12 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a large games room, great hall, dining room, two drawing rooms and a wine storage area. It serves as his family home, where he lives with his wife, Jools, and their five children Daisy Boo, Poppy Honey, Buddy Bear, Petal Blossom, and River Rocket. Jamie Oliver's Cookery School has also offered a cooking experience at Spains Hall, allowing guests to learn from his chefs and sample ingredients from his garden. The house had only been used by three families and hadn't been sold for 250 years when Mr Oliver bought it. The manor house boasts 12 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a large games room, great hall, dining room, two drawing rooms and a wine storage area. Mr Oliver filmed 20 episodes of Jamie: Keep Cooking And Carry On at his home in 2020 as he prepared food with limited ingredients for viewers isolated by the COVID pandemic. Original features include a well on the ground floor, a priest hole on the first floor and a two-storey red-brick Tudor gazebo in the gardens, which is named The Prayer house. The property also has an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and fishing lakes. No public comments have so far been registered and a decision on the application will be made by the council at a later date.

Huge £100million beachfront attraction with indoor forests and treehouses forced to delay opening date

According to the BBC, Local Government Minister Alex Norris confirmed all allocated funding for the project would be in place by early 2026, when building work is likely to get under way. Despite the delay, an updated report has said that "work has been progressing". There will also be a big meeting on June 4 to discuss the Eden Project with Lancaster City Council's budget and performance panel. The Eden Project Morecambe was first given official government approval back in March 2023. It also secured £50million in Levelling Up funding to allow work to commence on the £100million project. The project was originally named Eden Project North, and the hope was that it would have the same success as the Eden Project in Cornwall, which opened in 2001. Plans for the site are very impressive, showing three huge egg-shaped structures looking over the bay. Other images of the potential site reveal walkways linking treehouses, as well as other wooden structures. Once completed, the new Eden Project will be home to a "hyper-real forest" with large installations and immersive theatre. The Eden Project website states: "Eden Project Morecambe will be a destination that combines indoor and outdoor experiences, connecting people with the internationally-significant natural environment of Morecambe Bay while also enhancing wellbeing. "Eden Project Morecambe will combine exhibits, performance, learning, play, immersive experiences, world-class horticulture, live music, art, food, beverage and retail spaces, all integrated as essential parts of the overall experience." 5 Inside will be a hyper-real forest and immersive theatre Credit: Eden Project The site in Morecambe isn't the only one set to open in the UK, there's plans to build another Eden Project in Dundee. The Eden Project Dundee was also expected to open in 2026, but has been pushed back to 2030. The attraction is set to be built along the River Tay and attract as many as 500,000 tourists a year. Another Eden Project set to open is in Londonderry. This one is set to open this year - two years after the original opening date. The Eden Project Foyle in Northern Ireland is costing an estimated £67million and is set to have the biggest undercover play area in Europe. The main attraction will be the Acorn, a "performance area and play space" connected by walkway, with the entire site being the largest undercover play area in Europe. This includes zip wires, rope bridges, slides, floating boardwalks and paths on the roof that both adults and children can walk along.
