Maharashtra govt advises farmers to hold sowing till June 15
Mumbai, The Maharashtra agriculture department on Tuesday appealed to farmers not to rush into sowing till June 15 as the southwest monsoon is expected to become fully active in the latter half of this month.
The Chief Minister's Office stated that thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are expected in some areas and advised farmers and fisherfolk to exercise caution.
The state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the monsoon situation, crop water availability, and dam water storage levels, an official release stated.
Principal Secretary of the Agriculture Department, Vikaschandra Rastogi, told the cabinet that the monsoon is likely to be active across all regions of the state only after June 15 and appealed to farmers to wait for the monsoon to settle before beginning sowing.
"So far, 17 districts have received less than 25 per cent of the average, while 12 districts have received between 25 per cent and 50 per cent rainfall. Four districts received between 50 per cent and 75 per cent rainfall, while one district received over 100 per cent of its normal rainfall," the CMO said, highlighting adequate and smooth supply of fertilisers and seeds across regions.
"The monsoon is likely to reactivate in the next three to four days," said Shubhangi Bhute, Director of the Meteorological Department, adding that favourable conditions for monsoon advancement are likely to develop.
Rain is expected in parts of Marathwada between June 12 and 14, and in Konkan and Goa between June 12 and 15, with very heavy rainfall expected on June 13 and 14. Central Maharashtra is also expected to receive heavy rainfall between June 13 and 15.
Fisherfolk are advised not to venture into the sea during this period. Safety instructions have also been issued for the general public, warning of rain-related incidents.
The water storage levels in major dams across the state are satisfactory compared to the same period last year.

Chennai: Chennai is among eight Indian cities likely to face a two-fold increase in heatwave days in the next five years, with extended heatwave conditions expected to trigger more frequent, erratic, and incessant rainfall events, says a new study. The city, along with several coastal districts, is projected to undergo rapid microclimatic changes driven by land-use shifts, deforestation, and loss of wetlands and mangroves. Climate change is expected to drive a 43% rise in the intensity of extreme rainfall events across India, making it simultaneously hotter and wetter. "More than 75% of districts in 10 states, including TN, will face the double burden of heat stress and erratic, incessant rainfall by 2030. These districts are likely to experience at least one instance of a heatwave during March, April, or May." The study was conducted by by IPE-Global, involved in sustainable development, and Esri India, a company involved in GIS software and related solutions. 'Weathering the Storm: Managing Monsoons in a Warming Climate,' which assessed the link between extreme heat and erratic rainfall, was released at the International Global-South Climate Risk Symposium. By 2030, it said, 69% of coastal districts are projected to experience prolonged summer discomfort due to heat stress-like conditions during the June-Sept season, a figure that may rise to 79% by 2040. Under a business-as-usual climate scenario, where current emission trends and policies continue unchecked, Chennai and other identified hotspots could see up to a 63% change in land-use and land-cover by 2030. India already recorded a 15-fold increase in extreme heatwave days between March-May and June-Sept in the past three decades, with a 19-fold increase in the last decade alone. "Meteorological phenomena like El Niño and La Niña are gaining stronger momentum, leading to abrupt surges in climate extremes such as floods, cyclones, storm surges, and extreme heat," said Abinash Mohanty, head of Climate Change and Sustainability Practice at IPE Global and lead author. "Our analysis suggests that around 72% of tier-I and tier-II cities will increasingly face heat stress and extreme rainfall, with storm surges, lightning, and hailstorms. " Among the key recommendations of the study, which used spatial and temporal data along with climate models, is setting up a Climate Risk Observatory (CRO) to assess risks in real-time and develop risk financing tools to mitigate impacts of heatwaves and extreme rainfall events.

Ayodhya District Magistrate Nikhil Tikaram Funde also outlined proactive steps to mitigate its impact. 'We had prepared an action plan considering the heatwave in Ayodhya and according to this, a strategy was made for the steps to be taken by various departments. We are ensuring that the residents and tourists face no inconvenience and get enough cold water to drink. We have arranged shades and water for domestic as well as street animals. We appeal to all the tourists to stay in the shade while visiting the temple (Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple). If you need any medical help, we have reserved special beds for those affected by the heatwave. Consistently drink cold water,' Funde stated, emphasising the administration's efforts to support both locals and pilgrims.
